Packet8
(old news - 05:40PM Monday Feb 23 2004)
tags: VoIP
A number of Packet8 users reported a longer than usual outage in their service last night, with no notification on the packet8 network status page. Packet8 was, until now at least, ahead of Vonage in user satisfaction ratings. Things can change quickly on the user satisfaction front when a VOIP network has a compete outage (which this may or may not have been). While reducing your phone bill is an excellent incentive to go VOIP, considering whether the system may not be available for an hour, or even a day, must be taken into account.

Down for about an hour

In the VOIP forum Packet8 was first reported to be down at 9:11 PM Eastern time and first reported to be back up at 9:54 PM.

OMG. What about all the people that couldn't call 911. What shall we do, what shall we do?

Re: Down for about an hour

But what if I tell them I live on Maple Lane instead of Maple Street and they can't find me?

And what if the battery in my phone is dead and I can't get a signal?

And what if I'm at my friend's house?

And what if I get hit by the ambulance trying to cross the street? Oh, never mind, they'll find me easy then.

The same arguments people have about VOIP and power outages could just as easily be applied to people who only have cordless phones in their homes.

If you are that paranoid then do not join us (the VOIP community).

I got tired of paying BellSouth $45 a month for a noisy humming analog phone line. I'd call 15 minutes down the road and its long distance. Thats crazy! I love my $20 a month phone...its less a month..plus I get more! I've been POTS free for over 6 months and I love it.

My Packet8 phone on my cordless phones work great through power outages!

My friend, although I understand your grief, I do not understand your lack of caution, to put it mildly. How can you rely only on VoIP (whoever is the provider)? If this is a major concern to you - and I do understand that ,then VoIP is not the solution for you. One poster here was right, use the cell phone...or keep a line (POTS) even disconnected has 911, but let me tell you, not even POTS is 100% proof....

Re: Down for about an hour

ha ha whens the last time you've actually dialed 911? and do you understand the concept of VoIP? Deactivating a PSTN is solely up to you and @ your discretion...ha ha ha i myself would deactive PSTN line, but i do use P8 and it kicks ass....havent had a problem yet.... Do your homework young buck.....

Re: Down for about an hour

FP, I have no idea where your coming at me for the above.
As far as my homework, I have been in VOIP since the start.
As far as knowing VOIP I have both a bunch of Vonage lines and a P8 line. All I said which was a true statement was that P8 doesn't offer 911. As far as being a young buck, hell I wish.

Use your cancelled cellphone. Many people have them. 911 still works.

Exactly... I never even noticed it was down until I was browsing the forums.

How come they don't post headline news about Cox HSI being down for sometimes hours on end???

Cox Omaha had all of Council Bluffs out from 12:00pm to 2:35pm today due to a node problem.

The halls in my office building looked like a power outage, work came to a halt....LOL

This is why I have stayed w/ Vonage

I may pay $20 more but I have never had to call tech support yet and I have had the service for over a year. My roomate and I tested packet 8/FWD/ Vonage at the same time and Packet 8 had issues then. Not being able to reach tech support for that long is a big issue. They should have at least a website that you can report an outage or a number you can call. Maybe a back office support team that looks for network issues based upon the reports.

YOU DON'T GET WHAT YOU ARE NOT PAYING FOR.

Re: My Packet8 service is having out calls problem

Mine's been working great now that my internet connection has 1-2% packet loss instead of 30+% packet loss. Incoming and outgoing both have been great the last few days including this morning.
