Exactly. When I first saw the change, I was a little shocked, but I thought "That's cool. I wonder how many people are going to go nuts about this though?" I believe Google should have made it known that they could do this, and provide a way to opt-out, but I'm not pissed.

| Thing about your statement just a bit harder next time before stating something so not well thought out. Example - lets say Google gets it's update server compromised. Yes it's Google I'm sure they have top notch security. But things can happen. With this update server compromised the person(s) wishing to infect others machines would have an easy time. Yes most people would say ok to a pop up asking them if they want the update from Google. So yes in theory they would still become infected. But no program should auto update unless the user has specifically asked it. Users of any software shouldn't be forced to except auto updates. In my opinion it's just bad security. Thus the reason users brought it up in the security forum. There NOT complaining to be complaining. They have a genuine concern that needs to be addressed. | |

Since we know nothing about how this auto updating system works, you don't know exactly what can be changed. What if Google designed it so that the only things that could be changed were the images, not allowing any actual program code to be changed at all? Then, all a hacker could do is display a very small image on someone's computer, until Google resolved the problem. That's not a very serious issue.

| Re: WTF? c I don't think people mind the "changing theme" -- Google has changed their home page logo, for example, on most major holidays (although, Bastille Day? Give me a f**king break...).
The argument people are making is quite a legitimate one: there's nothing in the EULA that mentions Google will make modifications to the toolbar without user intervention. That's the key point here: the fact that there's no option to turn prompting for such installations/changes/updates on/off, or even mention that they occur at all. Hell, I didn't even know the thing auto-updated itself until a few days ago -- I thought you were supposed to uninstall it and re-download a new version every so often.
However, I do agree with you on the point that I don't see what all the hooplah is about. I wouldn't mind it, I'd think it's kinda cute. But it definitely came as a surprise to people who WEREN'T expecting it. You've got to admit, people are now going to start wondering what else the Google Toolbar could/might do in the future, or what it might have already done in the past. Yes, paranoia speaking, but paranoia seems to run rampant around here anyways. *wink* -- Making life hard for others since 1977.

It was a surprise, but everything else is just paranoia. If you can't trust Google to not screw you over, than you can't trust anyone. Just turn off your computer for good, because simply turning on your computer requires you to trust many different companies.

| Q: Features or Windows type? I've three PCs all with the Toolbar. I did everything I could during the course of people freaking out over a heart background or a black background to see if I could get mine to do it -- nada.
The only thing that comes to mind are the following:
1) Are people with the hearts or black backgrounds using the "w/ Advanced Features" type of the Google Toolbar (i.e. the one that sends helpful usage information back to Google)? All of my systems use the non-Advanced installation mode, just because I didn't really see the point, and I don't agree with sending back usage information for such things.
2) Are people with the hearts or black backgrounds using the "XP Theme" or the "Classic Theme" on their XP machines? I use the Classic theme (heavily modified, including unchecking the "Folders have their own background images" option).
Just some ideas. Oh, and I've rebooted all of those PCs many times over the past 48 hours, so... *shrug* -- Making life hard for others since 1977.

[/QUOTE Nope, both my systems are running with no advanced features, no autofill, no nothing (I only use it for the search field and the popup blocker). My desktop updated on Thursday, IIRC (at least that's when I noticed it), and my notebook updated sometime yesterday.
[QUOTE= koitsu ]2) Are people with the hearts or black backgrounds using the "XP Theme" or the "Classic Theme" on their XP machines? I use the Classic theme (heavily modified, including unchecking the "Folders have their own background images" option).
My notebook's XP installation is tweaked to look as much like classic Win2k as I can. My desktop is running Win2k. Both toolbars look the same.
Since each machine updated at a different time, I'm guessing it only checks for updates every few days, and they're checking on different schedules because they were installed at different times.
One of my first thoughts when I saw the update was "I bet there's going to be a big uproar on BBR about this!" I'll admit that initially I was a little taken aback, and I thought "Oh great, even Google isn't above screwing with us remotely!" But since Google does have a history of doing cutesy things with its logo on holidays, I got over it pretty quickly.
At this point, having the fact that I'm single on Valentines Day rubbed in my face is bothering me more than the technical aspects of this are.

What would a Jewish person do if their Google toolbar suddenly had a Nazi symbol appear in honor of the Hitlers Birthday, or a Catholic suddenly had to see graphics associated with a holiday that their religion does not celebrate?
Pardon my ignorance, but is my logic flawed? Granted I'm not flipping my wig over the issue, but it does deserve addressing.

So many said Google Toolbar was the best. This seems to be a very bad deal for anyone interested in securing their machine.
