| Take ES5 OUT! Please, ES5 is bunch of bloated program with lame and out dated features that they are using to promote their unrealistic cloaking from the RIAA. WASTE is the best for annymous p2p because it's hard to get in to the "group" and second all transmissions are encrypted, making RIAA wasteful to sniff packets that looks garbage.
Small and trusted p2p network is the safest p2p network IMO.

| Newsgroups are great, except for one problem. Not all ISP's carry the 'alt.binary' groups (where all file attachments are supposed to go) AND not all ISP's 'keep' all the messages -- in fact, some deliberately set the expire timeouts low so that if server space is at a premium, a large binary file message will get deleted to make room for several small text messages that are as little as 5 minutes 'newer'.
So newsgroup sharing becomes a 'scavenger hunt' exercise, where you can get MOST of a file youw ant, but have to go hunting for the one message (or four) that will complete the 'collection' and enable you to reassemble your file.
The pay-to-play newsgroup services like Supernews are much better... but their rates are almost as high per month as ISP access (sometimes more, depending on how much data you pull).
But yes, they are reasonably anonymous...keep in mind that posts to USENET go through SMTP (email outbound) so are subject to the same anonymity restrictions (branded with originating IP etc). Most privacy-savvy users can get around this using SMTP proxies and forged headers, but the average Joe probably will not know how to go about doing this.

| Newsgroups aren't available to every person freely by their own ISPs and premium pay services that are out there don't come without their limitations.. Newsgroups also aren't necessarily anonymous to the uploader/poster of material either.. I'm actually quite surprised that RIAA/MPAA and their lobbyists haven't focused on this source considering what binaries groups offer to their downloaders. I'd assume that their focus is centered around the easiest target that is the most publicised amongest fairly uneducated PC users. Although one must wonder how long this trend will last until the watchdog groups eventually set their sights higher on bittorrent and newsgroups as well... | |

| Suprnova has already been in the mainstream press (MSNBC article somewhere on this site).
The RIAA/MPAA have been snooping Suprnova users for quite some time, and many letters have been sent to downloaders. With Bittorrent, if you're downloading, you're uploading, so everyone is guilty. I'm not surprised Suprnova is still online... they have many mirrors most of which are located in other countries. The site that lists the torrents is not nearly as prone to shutdowns as the trackers that coordinate the transfers themselves. There's nothing illegal about listings.
Besides, keeping the site alive provides a steady flow of illegal downloaders for the authorities to sue.
Suprnova is the 'Kazaa' of Bittorrent. It's the most mainstream and easily accessible BT site. With something like a million hits a day, you can bet your ass the RIAA/MPAA is watching.
I personally believe P2P will be victorious over the authorities. The technology cannot be stopped, and security will only get better and better. But that victory is still a long way off. So until that time, if you don't want to get sued, the only way to truly avoid it is don't download illegal content.
P2P will prevail, as there are countless legal applications of such a technology.

Unless you are doing end to end encryption it doesn't matter how many proxy servers you jump through. You can still be traced back to your source, it just takes a court order.

You have to be a brain dead sponge to think that file trading is ok.
Sure its ok to trade "free" programs like linux, but to think its "kool" to trade a new release CD/game/movie is just lame.
I am sure its flattering to the cast and crew of the movies that are traded for free, to see that their movie is "hot" on te P2P networks. But when it comes to getting a paycheck, will the P2P network support them?
I doubt it. Nearly all of the P2P peeps are the "something for nothing" crowd. Instead of working for the cash to pay for the cd or movie, they'd rather steal it [the song or movie or program].
I'd like to see a "surcharge" added to evry broadband users account. Make it 10 bucks a month per so much down load. Go past the download limit, pay another 10 bucks.
I doubt that p2p is going way, so maybe charging by the amount downloaded over a certain limit is the way to go.
Or go back to a pay by the hour to surf the net.. kinda like the old AOL.
Broadband providers don't help with their ads talking about fast file transfer rates.
VPN, BBS.. Host them in a country or on a private island where the laws of the US don't apply, what can then the RIAA, MPAA, and the programers do?
Just what they have, attack those in the US. -- "He told me that if you can't tell something fom right or wrong, ask yourself if you mind people seeing what your doing. If you'd rather keep it a secret, then maybe it aint so right after all"From: Hunter page 389. Author: James Byron Huggins

| What does it take? What does it take to convince people that no matter how "private" a network is, the government has technology to bypass it. Once and for all, there is NO WAY, to send data across a phone line and not have it TRACED to a point of origin. Phone monitoring equipment monitors your connection as if they were sitting at your screen or the other end's screen, or any number of screens in between. Give it up, Mr Quick Buck, your service probably won't last very long, and I'd commend you if it did, and retract this statement.
Have fun while it does though. I'd recommend taking your profit at stuffing it in a mattress somewhere nobody can find it other than you, or it'll be locked up in investigation before you know it.

Fair use is any use.
There is no "theft" in downloading a file. A corollary of Adam Smith's arguments for capitalism: a download would not occur if it harmed either party involved. Therefore, free communication of information gives the best possible information structure. The gvt is stealing from our culture and our future by turning the potential information power of the Internet into a pop-infested commercial wasteland.
You don't have to listen to me. Perhaps Copyright is the just and moral way. However, we will all be downloading entire video stores in ~20 years. Meditate on that.

Try using an different email than your hotmail account, turn off the damn t.v. and read a book or post your own news on your own site.
The average Joe needs to learn to grow up in terms of branching out from the crap that is produced by major companies that only enforce and promote censorship, laughable lawsuits against filesharers (instead of providing a cheap, legal download service > $.50 song, not $1.00 a pop, cd's are approx. $1 a song, where's the advantage of using a legal d/l service?).
