'Doubles' the range of Xtreme G Gear
(old news - 10:49AM Friday Jan 09 2004)
tags: business · wireless · hardware
Announced at CES this week (like everything else), wireless hardware manufacturer D-link unveiled a firmware upgrade that they claim effectively doubles the range of their 802.11g Xtreme G line of routers. Co-developed by Atheros, the free firmware upgrade should be available by mid-February at the D-link website. The company's press release holds additional information about the architecture's 105dBm radio receive sensitivity, and naturally users of our D-link forum will be able to inform you if the company's claims hold water when the firmware is released. The company is also showcasing its wireless broadband video phone (utilizing what D-link dubs "enhanced 802.11b") at CES this week, something we explored last December.

thats all fine but

thats all fine but what about LINUX drivers and the fact that dlink is the one that has major issues due to the propriety bios that dlink uses. what about interference with 2.4ghz phones! what about compatibility with other wireless devices

Im impressed...

First double speed with firmware update, now double distance.. Sounds good to me, even though im using a dlink wired router, But I will have a wireless router someday when I get a laptop.

Please do not but from Tiger Direct. They really suck. Bad experiences everytime I've dealt with them.

No security...

Sorry people, not going to invest anymore money in wireless networking until it's certain that wireless is safe. Until then, I'm unplugging my Access Point because I'm a target where I live... even with all security features enabled.

How can anyone bust 128bit WEP encryption and then get past the MAC authentication? Even then how can they get assigned an IP address if you configure the DHCP server to assign only enough addresses to fit the number of pcs you use?

trying to hide something eh?

seriously i cant stand when people go on and on about wireless security...

you have to think of it like this... WTF is there on your pc or network that is so valuable, and to who? probably not much, and to nobody...

most people who hop on to wireless networks just do it for net access... trust me ive setup more than one honeypot and nobody has ever scanned my network, just used the net

even if they did i dont really care, none of my pc's have open shares, and i dont have a soho router or accesspoints they canmess with through web interfaces and passwords that are not default

Re: No security...

I agree, most people hop on to use your wireless bandwidth to get free internet service and not to steal or do damage do to your pc. I hardly hear incidents where people's information were stolen or damaged over their wireless network. WEP can be broken, but it's somewhat of a deterent just like a car alarm. However, if there's a will then there's a way.

Because there is plenty of illegal things that they can do that you will be held responsible for. Sure most may not, but the fact is there is always that chance of it happening, and I sure am not about to take that risk of not using security.

WPA is good enough. WEP can be cracked.

Just because you don't hear of hacking going on doesn't mean it doesn't happen. I'm sure many don't even know its happened.

Re: No security...

1. MAC Spoofing takes a second to do with the right software.
2. WEP encryption is a joke, takes roughly 20 minutes to crack it on a p4 laptop.
3. DHCP is not a security measure since static IP can be used.

WAP+PSK are one of the toughter authentication methods to break at the moment. The key being "at the moment".

Even when using "open system", rather than "shared key"? I don't think so, but I'm seriously asking.

Wireless is actually far more secure than wired WHEN
CONFIGURED PROPERLY .... that last part is the gotcha
because most people don't want to take the time to
be bothered to setup the security features already
available to them in every wireless router.

There is about 12 wireless networks in the neighborhood
where I live. 6 of those were apparently plugged in
straight out of the box and are totally open with default
configurations. 2 use minimal 64 bit WEP encryption.
1 uses 128 bit WEP encryption, and 2 others are a little
more security minded and use both WEP encryption and
WPA authentication.

... Then there is mine that is a bit more paranoid and
uses an enhanced 1,024 bit WEP encryption, WPA
Authentication with revolving keys and broadcast
frequency shifting, MAC approval lists, and a
secondary 4,096 bit triple DES hardware based
packet encryption running tunnel over the base
WEP session.

um I think not

nice reasoning pal someone can look through my house as long as they don't steal the silver. virtual B&E is about the same in my eyes virtual space should have certain privacy rights.

Re: um I think not

i am so tired with the house comparisons... ok, with some decent security on your pcs and an open wireless network, its like putting someone in a completely empty room in your house with a bunch of locked door... only two are open, the way they came in, and the way out (net)

Re: um I think not

Yeah, these warchalkers just want your 'net access. For what? Why to hack or make a spam run or D/L kiddie pr0n, of course! You gotta be real slow to think that WEP crackers just wanna have some innocent fun.

With your attitude about wireless security I'd bet that you also think open SMTP servers are just peachy, too.

I live in a semi-rural area, have 128-bit WEP on, SSID-broadcast off, and still had someone hijack my WiFi net for a few hours until I noticed traffic where there should be none. Now I change WEP keys randomly and am looking at finding a WAP that does WPA or moving it so that I can run IPsec in a manner that would prevent a hijacker from gaining any kind of access.

Not the same.

When you transmit out onto the public airwaves, it's a whole different thing then having someone break into your house.

You don't own the airwaves, so you should consider anything you're transmitting to be public domain. If you don't want someone to use your wireless, it's up to you to secure it. You shouldn't complain that they should somehow be stopped, you should instead stop them yourself.

How long?

How long does it take to crack a 128 bit WEP encryption?

It's pretty hard

It will take some time if only a few people are using the WAP. I think AirSnort needs what? 1,000,000 packets to crack the encryption? Im not exactly sure, but it will take forever if only a few people use the AP at a time.

Re: It's pretty hard

I work as a consultant for a security company. When we do security risk assessments the first point of vulnerability we exploit are wireless access points.
I've been using libwnet which injects packets into the low traffic networks to expedite decryption. I have yet to run into any network that would take more then 20 to 30 minutes to break 128 bit encryption.

On topic?

If Dlink gets their act together and fixes the numerous bugs in the 624 firmware and doubles the range they will own the market and have a killer combination.

Doubling the range of routers that constantly reboot , drop connections and otherwise misbehave is doubling trouble.

Dlink better get it right. There any many Dlink 624 owners sitting on a fence now, waiting to dump Dlink if cries for fixes to basic functionality go ignored.
