Nope, it's true. The link above, MediaGuardian, is real. I'm looking forward to the crowded market. The more competition the better. Let's see who is going to outdo the other. Being that the profit margins are razor thin, that will indicate who is the strongest to survive. I'd say, after the dust settles, it'll iTunes, because they come out with it first; then Napster, because of name recognition. There might even be a couple 'em leftover to pick up the crumbs.

The problem is that their not competing to make money; they're competing to possibly maybe make money at some point in the future...maybe. Last time this happened was in the dot-com gold rush, and I should hope we all know the carnage that left (We're all wading thru it right now).
What scares me is they're all going to fight tooth and nail to out-do each other. I fear the one or two services left standing will claim victory only for a few months after which they will succumb to their gaping wounds bleeding the money they used to kill the others; they'll either be sold off or be dissolved in a bankruptcy. -- Infogrames != Atari

Actually, it's happening right now with wireless. Nobody is making much, if any, money from wireless but everyone is looking to expand their coverage while nobody is ready to sell. Sooner or later the bottom is going to drop out and some wireless companies are going to go belly up.

| Tell Coke to Stop the Violence Welcome to Cokewatch, a website designed to keep an eye on The Coca-Cola Company, one of the worlds most well-known corporations. You may be shocked to learn about the conditions under which Coca Cola products are produced and distributed.
In Colombia, for example, union workers who bottle Coca Cola products have been kidnapped, tortured and murdered. The largest Coca Cola union in Colombia has asked for an international campaign against Coke to stop the violence against workers, which has included a half-dozen murders at one plant alone in the mid-1990s. Reports of these crimes sparked a historic lawsuit against the Coca Cola Company and their Colombian bottler by the International Labor Rights Fund and the United Steelworkers of America on behalf of the Colombian union

Unless WalMart gets them. WalMart has a well deserved reputation for driving prices down from distributors. I guarantee WM is not going to cough up 99 cents out of each dollar to the RIAA. They'll push that price down and put pressure on the RIAA to keep lowering it.

We can have all the competition in the world, and as long as anyone offering music for sale via download has to pay them a buck a tune, the price isn't going to drop to less than a dollar. And as long as they're charging us a buck or more a tune, I'll continue to download as much music as possible via Kazaa/Morpheus (of course, ahem, I am only downloading to back up original CD's which I purchased, for archival purposes. ahem) Sorry about the sore throat.

| Why download music at all? Except for the whole instant gratification thing, why download music at all? iTunes and their competitors tend to cost $0.99 per song. I can buy a used CD off of Half.com or Amazon.com for about $5 or less most times. Assuming an average of 12 songs per CD, that comes to $0.42 per song. I can then rip the CD into whatever format/bitrate that I want. I also have the original CD to use as a backup in case something happens to my ripped copies. (And no, those ripped copies don't go onto P2P apps. They're strictly for my own personal use.)
In addition, none of that money goes back to the RIAA (despite the fact that they'd love to sink their teeth into the used CD market). I guess the only time I would buy from an online service would be if I just had to have a song today and I couldn't get a good deal on the CD or didn't like any other songs on the CD. Then again, when you can get the whole CD for $5 or less, you're more forgiving about songs you don't care about being on it. -- -Jason Levine http://www.jasons-toolbox.com/ http://www.PCQandA.com/ http://www.urateit.com/

Pepsi vs. Coke. Who Gives A Shit? -- by Chris Yochum
Pepsi, Coke, Pepsi, Coke who cares. I am so sick of Pepsi and Coke commercials. Commercials exist to make consumers aware of products (typically new ones). Well who the hell is not aware of the 2 major soft drink enterprises: Pepsi and Coke?
This is what happens: You are born. You do not give a shit about soft drink products. You like milky boobs, putting stuff in your mouth, and shitting your pants. Then you get a bit older. Your mom or dad keep either Pepsi or Coke in the fridge. This will most likely dictate if you are a Pepsi or Coke fan (nobody likes both, everyone has a preference). So there you go. No commercial is going to convert a Coke fan to a Pepsi fan or vice versa. Some people probably like RC cola, food club cola, W cola, or some other generic brand cola.
So why all the crummy commercials? The worst commercials come from Pepsi. That stupid curly haired girl (curly sue) with the voice-overs and stuff just make me want to throw something heavy at my TV screen. And have you seen the new Pepsi commercial with Britney Spears. I mean have you seen this crap? Crossroads looks like it is going to be a great movie by the way "so it's about these girls who make the conclusion to go on a road trip and they find things out about themselves and really define their friendship and it is not at all a bit over-marketed to girls ages 4 - 10". Coke has Garth Brooks singing some dumb song. I do not need a celebrity selling me products. I sure hope Terry Bradshaw does another collect call commercial because he is so funny. A celebrity is used for 2 reasons.
1. To draw attention to the commercial.
2. To make you want the product because this celebrity is adored by some 85% of the general population.
Do you think Garth Brooks believes in the power of Coke, or maybe he just likes getting a check ever since Achy-Breaky heart stopped rocking the trailer parks.
I guess the bottom line is that you either like Coke or Pepsi, and no celebrity or commercial is going to change that. So please stop the painfully insulting commercials.
We need more commercials with guys getting hit in the nuts and stuff. Remember the Noid? How about the old Little Caesars commercials? Don't forget to throw in a monkey every now and then.
Chris.
I sent this letter to Coke and Pepsi. See Pepsi-Cola's reply below.
Hello!
Thank you for taking the time to contact us here at the Pepsi-Cola Company regarding our recent advertising. We genuinely appreciate your comments and your taking the time to share them with us. I can assure you; we attach a great deal of importance to the views of our valued consumers. As you'd probably guess, it's extremely important to us at Pepsi that our advertising serves to enhance the positive image that's helped place our brands among the world's most popular consumer products. Anything that we do that detracts from that effort, clearly, represents a less than desirable effect.
Therefore, your comments will be shared with our advertising department. We want them to be aware of your opinion regarding our advertising, and to make it a part of their considerations in future work. Once again, thank you for taking the time to contact us.

My opinion on coke/pepsi doing the mp3 downloads is nothing more than advertisement for their products. I'm sure the next thing will be.. buy a six pack, get 3 free downloads or something stupid like that. I don't think coke and pepsi are really in for for the money but it is just another way for them to promote their product like when pepsi gave away that rocket cash and with when pizzahut distributed free dvds with your pizza. They not doing it to diversify the business but to strengthen the marketing campaigns. Other company like Walmart and mircosoft maybe looking at for the long haul but for pepsi and coke i doubt it will last that long.
