Muni-Vermont
Burlington's fiber future
Burlington, Vermont is the latest city to hop on the municipal broadband bandwagon. Wired News explores the muni-push by discussing plans in Burlington to provide the city's 40,000 residents (and emergency services) with fiber connectivity. The article, by Stamford professor Lawrence Lessig, doesn't really go into details as to how the network is being built, but instead waxes poetic about muni-operations themselves. Additional commentary is available at Lessig's blog, which also links to this Burlington exploration over at Cornell University. If you're looking to better understand municipal competition, you should check out our interview with muni-attorney Jim Baller.

*never*

Will never happen in my area. I live in a Qwest area. the quickest way to get fibre is move to it, dont wait til it moves to you(that could be never)

I know why

Probably doing it because Burlington has had major problems with Adelphia PowerLink.

Re: I know why

It has nothing to do with Powerlink. The primary user of the network is the city government followed by large and medium sized businesses. After the concept has been proven to work, then it will extend to residential services.

Re: I know why

the city government? bah. I live in Burlington, VT, and I think the city government is still running their networks on Pentium II machines. They'd think fiber was something you get by eating your Wheaties. I keep up on tech news in this area, and there hasn't been a word of this in local news yet.

Powerlink has been terrible in past years here, but they have significantly reworked their network.

Er....

I can only get 384/124 dsl and they are testing fiber optic, da... that really shows you that companies try out more stuff in big cities. Er, my pop is only 7725 though.....

It's not a company, it's a municipality.

burlington's fiber future, yeah, but not at my house

its late and i just saw this subject.i live in BTV,almost downtown where there are no cows and 2 houses from a network that is run by the city.the reason its run by the city is that its a smaller network that only is going to schools.a big company was going to make a network for the public, but dropped out so the city did it on their own.
i do not have faith in the city as they want to benifit the city, but not the people that live in the city.

as for powerlink, they had a big problem 2 years ago around this time of year.they fixed it earlier last year with an upgrade.i been stable since and been downloading alot faster then dsl :P ,but would like to see another option.
