Joins SBC, Verizon in RIAA legal battle
(old news - 02:28PM Saturday Oct 04 2003)
tags: legal · Fileswapping
While the majority of ISP's have rolled over to the RIAA's use of the DMCA to obtain file-sharing identities, Charter joins the few who have decided to stand and fight. Verizon was the earliest to stand up to the tactics; though they were eventually forced to turn over the names of several traders, their legal department has been hard at work trying to have the case overturned. SBC has likewise decided to stand up against the RIAA, refusing to turn over names last September (NY Times, free reg. required). SBC and Verizon have both the legal manpower and finances to do so; the majority of providers haven't had that luxury.

Charter communications has now apparently joined the stand as well, filing suit in the U.S. District Court in St. Louis to prevent the RIAA from obtaining the identities of 150 Charter customers singled out by RIAA lawyers.
