Local Co-Op sees the light
(old news - 01:09PM Monday Sep 29 2003)
tags: Fiber · business
Some Ohio residents will soon see fiber to the premises (FTTP) thanks to their local cooperative telephony company. Bascom Mutual Telephone, located about 50 miles southeast of Toledo, has teamed with Optical Solutions to bring FTTP to the areas surrounding Fostoria and Tiffin, Ohio. "We can't live on dial tone alone," says Bascom Mutual Telephone General Manager Dennis Depinet. Recent legislation passed by the Ohio PUC allows Bascom to overbuild broadband wired neighborhoods without forming a separate CLEC subsidiary.

"Bascom Mutual is a great example of a cooperative telephony company rolling up its sleeves and serving their subscribers with the type of advanced services the subscribers just can't get from the incumbent," says Senior Vice President of Sales and Customer Service Brian Brown. Naturally Bascom's small service area makes it easier to deploy such technology quickly.

Holy Shat

from their website

"The FiberPath 500 is built on robust technology that is an industry first - it allows service providers to deploy networks using either BPON (ITU G.983, 622 Mbps downstream/155 Mbps upstream) or GPON (ITU G.984, 1.2 Gbps downstream/622 Mbps upstream) network protocols. The network protocol is software selectable."

If only we had those types of networks, so 100 users can use 622mbps of upload speed, there would be no more caps on the ool network ill tell you that

Re: Holy Shat

That's perfect! Wide open spaces to go with your wide open bandwidth!

I almost moved to London, OH in the early 90s...even put down a deposit on an apartment. I don't know where Bascom is, but London looks very similar on a map.

I can only think of two reasons not to move there now: the job market is probably pretty small, and it would take me away from my family.

That would be great if it were to be carried out.

I live in Ohio (cleveland area). I would love to see that type of speed to be inplimented.

Though I think it is a long way off.

Now this is how it should be done.....

It looks like someone here has looked forward more than just a few months and has seen what is really needed.

If this works, they can count on having the lion's market share with the technology to prevent them from play catch up years from now.

Too bad more real companies don't think like this co-op.

Hey Bellsouth !!!

Do you fat-cat execs hear that ?! If you want to really compete with the MSOs, roll the fibre already!

It would even be harder if the phone companies were competing against muni networks, where the public owns much of it since it is their tax money.

still waiting...

I'm still waiting for cable or DSL....

At least I have wireless access where I’m at.

Wow I read the article and this might come to me after all. Tiffin, Ohio is only about 10 miles away!

fiber to the pole/premesis

now if i'm not mistaken dsl cant go through fiber lines , so that would eliminate dsl in the areas with fiber to the pole now wouldnt it?

Re: fiber to the pole/premesis

there's no need to run dsl over it, the fiber terminating equipment could have a nice cat5 jack built into it giving you 100mbps full duplex with the head end, a lot faster than DSL could give you =P

ya thats true, a 622 Mbps upstream will send a whole dvd in like 10 minutes. And a 1.2 Gbps downstream can receive one in about 2 mins..God i want this connection

Exactly! How much will this cost?

It's highly unlikely that they will be offering their customers 1.2gb x 622mb data connections. The cost of the backhaul to the Internet backbone would be enormous. Most places on the Internet can't send you information that fast anyway.

On the FiberPath 500, the 1.2gb x 622mb is shared among 32 households per fiber run. That bandwidth must carry voice, data and video to all the attached customers. If you consider 3 tv's per house and each one watching an HDTV signal(in the future), then that bandwidth goes away real quickly.

That said, the FiberPath 500 is the most advanced product on the market right now and should provide plenty of bandwidth for many years to come.

My understanding is this is for broadband deployment.. read a bit more into it i doubt it will be for hdtv signals.

Re: fiber to the pole/premesis

As quoted from the article:

*****

"Bascom is investing in their network because they know the region and the needs of their population better than anyone else. By overbuilding with FiberPath 500 they can deliver what their subscribers are looking for - multi-line phone service, high quality video choices and services, and scalable high speed data in a single, integrated monthly bill."

*****

Yes, they are thinking of video services. If they are forward looking enough to put in the FiberPath 500, then they are surely forward thinking enough to know about the need for HDTV services.

Actually assuming you got scsi 320mbit equipment your speed would be one quarter of that 1.2gbps and one half of that 622mbps. once you start getting over 100mbps its your hardware that limits you, not your connection. and if you got ide crap then its even worse :/

But hardware requirements?

It'd cost me a ton in just hardware for it
My router only has a 10mbps port for the modem to plug into, and all my NICs are 100mbps or less.... no gigabits for my LAN. (not that I live in Ohio anyways)

i wannait!!

'bout time someone started thinking about customers -- i'm currently in a hate-hate relationship with my wireless broadband isp - they sold me a public ip address with unlimited unmetered bandwidth...

next thing i know - i'm on the phone a week trying to find out what's wrong with my hardware - i did everything, reinstalled os, repositioned wireless antennae - etc...

low and behold - a week later and a 100 phone calls later (really, you can check my phone bill) -- the loyal isp admits they were lying to me when they tried to sell me new hardware - the problem was that they didn't like me using the system so to speak...

anyway, hopefully this fibre in ohio will prompt somebody over in illinois to do the same! - i'm sick and tired of isps over selling their bandwidth and then blaming YOU the CUSTOMER for using too much of what you bought (when what you bought was technically unmetered/unlimited)...grrrr

FIBRE HERE I AM - COME FIND ME IN ILLINOIS!!!

People in washington pay $29.95/mo for 100000/100000 and no bandwidth caps to boot. people in California are paying around $50/month for 10000/10000 with like 30gb data cap. the downside? chances are if you arent 'in an affluent neighborhood' nobody's gonna deploy fibre in your area due to the high initial cost ~$2300.

need for speed

Aside from the fact I can think of quite a few things to do with that bandwidth (kernel.org mirror?) and know of some places I could send to at full line-speed it isn't going to happen. The network is probably being built with upgradeability and future-proof in mind.

They'll be lucky if they see 10/10 mbits at first.

However, if you are going to build a fiber network for such a small town why use a PON network?

TCP Windowing

Anyone out there currently getting FTTP? During install, were adjustments made to you PC to support the bandwidth FTTP provides? TCP windows are not currently optimized for these high speeds.

Just curious.......
