46.7 million can't be wrong...
(old news - 01:15PM Wednesday Sep 10 2003)
tags: dsl · stats · world
According to the latest numbers, global DSL subscriptions jumped by 5.2 million in the second quarter of this year, resulting in 46.7 million DSL users worldwide. The latest numbers from Point Topic indicate that seven countries account for 75% of that total. Japan added 2.6 million, China came in second with 1.8 million lines added, while the U.S. came in third, adding 1,125,000 DSL subs. Four European countries tacked on an additional 500K DSL subscribers each. Both Israel and the UK saw considerable growth early this year among countries of their size.

46.7 million get to read e-mail faster... wow.

Numbers and stats are nice, broadband is addictive, and you'll never think about going back to dial-up. But where's the CONTENT that will get people to say "crap, I gotta get broadband, dude!"

Yeah, I love my DSL, but I've yet to do something with it(besides saving time, and Spinner) that I couldn't do with dial-up.

Why do we need a killer app? The internet is a killer app all by itself, as-is. Browsing sites goes from a slow painful process to something enjoyable.

Hello,

I do not know about you, but broadband has made possible for me to work from home, and transfer huge files back and forth. Here in Atlanta, the Gov is asking businesses to find ways of letting people telecommute, and this is were broadband/DSL will come into play. Plus I have created some of my own content, most will never see. With broadband I can keep my far flung family up to date with what is happening with my tribe with video, and other digital products. And like a couple of years ago, we will probably have another tele- holiday(Thanksgiving/Christmas). My sister-in-law is getting married, and the plan is to web cast the event for those who can not be there. So I say create your own content, and see what other uses you can find for broadband/DSL

Ahh.... A crapple troll. I dropped cable in favor of DSL and have never looked back. In all likelihood, I never will look back.

With its downtime, unreliable service, expense, and severe restrictions/limitations, the only way I would consider cable is if my only other option were dial-up. With my DSL line, I have rock-solid service, good (intelligent) customer service/support (if needed), a static IP, and no restrictions on what I can do/can't do (read as "run your own servers and have no ports blocked").

Best of all, my DSL company doesn't complain the second I run over some nonsensical "cap". I've never been labeled a "bandwidth hog" and never will-- because unlike cable they know how to run a network and not alienate their customers.

Your dog would eat the cat ?! The same dog as in the avatar ?! If it is, I'd be more worried about a cougar eating the dog than the dog starving to death.

Cable is great if your provider is a good one. In my area of NYC I couldn't get cable internet access. My brother could. His speeds were lightspeed fast (better than 3Mbs) until the rest of his neighborhood got onboard. So, his node is full, and now his download speed is no better then mine (1.5Mbs), and his upload speed is capped at 80kbs (I have 128kbs). I also pay $40 USD less then he does. Guess what, he's in the process of switching. He got tired of paying so much for so [much] less.
So in some large areas with cable "market" saturation - if DSL is available it's usually cheaper. So why not try it!

Re: o_O

Cable numbers are constantly coming out in other articles... You just have to watch for them. This article's author chose to focus on DSL instead of cable, so just leave it at that.

That doesn't necessarily mean cable is better, just that it's available in more areas. Where I live (18,900 feet from my CO) it looks like my only option will be cable, if/when it becomes available in a few months.

Still none..

IT IS WRONG!!! I STILL don't have DSL in my neighborhood. Probably never will.

The one tech at Qwest that I talked to said the technology is not availble to wire neighborhoods that are more than 18000 ft from the CO. We all know that it a load of BULL! They could easily drop a RT in my neighborhood and take care of it.

Qwest, Ride our lies!

Re: Still none..

I feel your pain.

No, really, I do.

I had Verizon DSL then I move to an apartment that wasn't serviceable by VOL, fiber in the loop, so I got Adelphia Powerlink instead.

Now, I'm in my own home, too far away from the cable main trunk to even get cable and too far for DSL. I hate dial up and the way I've been connecting on dial up I think I got a poor line or something cause I can't even get 56K with a brand new V.92 modem (had to buy one)

I think I'm going to have to get Satellite until Verizon does something like improve the technology or drops an RT next to my house.

It's kinda funny how internal modems no longer come standard in PCs.

Actually, I built my PC and since I had a NIC card for my Verizon DSL, I don't even bother to put one in.

When Qwest does eventually wire your neighborhood(they will , don't worry) don't be upset when the speed sucks. It's kinda a Qwest tradition on being the worst DSL telco(as far as bandwidth is concerned) in the country. I'll never go back to them, even if Adelphia lowers to 1500/128.

Qwest

Hmm, when I had a 640/272 line with Qwest, I had no problems whatsoever. Of course, that was a few years ago, back when they offered Cisco 67x routers. That was also the time when @Home was only available in the 80906 area code (where I was). I never had a problem with @Home, either. I also never had a problem with Speakeasy when I lived on Peterson AFB, though it was IDSL (they have Adelphia there now).

The problem was right there, with a 640/272 line. It was stable, but there was just no bandwidth to do anything practical. Latency was bad and download times were slow. I'm still wondering why Qwest refuses to give at least 1.5mbps as the standard. All the other telcos are doing it, why can't you?
