i have both dvdxcopy and dvdshrink. dvdshrink works very well however, the vob files that it produces sometimes would cause the dvd authorizing software to break up the mpeg-2 encoding into multiple files. the ones from dvdxcopy does not have this problem.
when there are several mpeg-2 files instead of one, you would see a slight pause at the point when they connect. with one mpeg-2 file, there is no pause to speak of.
so, dvdshrink works very well but if you're getting multiple mpeg-2 files when authorizing the dvd, use dvdxcopy.

on the contrary, i don't think you understand what i'm talking about. i'm not talking about straight copying from the source dvd. i'm talking about editing the content of the vob files from the dvd, where you would have to cut out a significant number of frames from the vob files. for instance, if you want to make a dvd of all the chase scenes from all the James Bond movies, you would have to cut out the other scenes to do this and then connect all the chase scenes together.
I guess not too many people would do this but for those who would do it, dvdxcopy works better than dvdshrink because its vob files do not break into multiple mpeg-2 files when you do the encoding.
the point of my post is simply dvdxcopy can do something that dvdshrink cannot do.

| Re: Why pay for this crap anyway I still contend you have a great deal of reading at dvdrhelp.com and doom9.net until you understand the terms transcoding and re-encoding particularly with CCE and motion prediction before you are able to comment on copying a DVD-9 to a DVD-5. DVDShrink does not "break VOB files, it transcodes them. DVDxCopy like DVDFab determines "break points" that allows you to split a DVD-9 (or dual layer DVD) into 2 writable DVD-5's but does so without altering VOB's

2.5GB VOB Mick? Please do your homewark
You guys are scary BTW.
And yes whoever questioned it DVD writables can and are sometimes called just + or - when generically referring to a particular format's properties.
PLEASE folks go to dvdrhelp and or doom9 and read up. There is so much to learn and you really can't bluff or guess your way through it.
It's a really interesting hobby for some of us. You will also learn why DVDxCOPY without Derrow's fix was a steamy pile of poop and DVDFab can split a DVD-9 doing just as good a job as DVDxCOPY as well learning how to do a far better job compressing a DVD-9 to a DVD-5 than ANY commercial program is capable of if you want to take the time to learn.
I promise. | |

2.5GB VOB Mick? Please do your homewark
No. not a 2.5 gb vob file but a 2.5 gb mpeg-2 file. tmpgenc dvd author would combine all the vob files into one giant mpeg-2 file for the user to edit.
from the post above: ------------------ for example => 1:30 min dvd clip generate mpeg-2 file from tmpgenc dvd author: ------------------
if you have used tmpgenc dvd author, you would understand precisely what i'm talking about. that is how that program works.
and i've been trying to tell you with the vob files from dvdshrink i would get two mpeg-2 files: one 1.5 gb mpeg-2 file and another one 1.0 gb mpeg-2 file. With the vob files from dvdxcopy, i would get only one 2.5 gb mpeg-2 file.
I've tried a number of times now with different dvds and always come up with the same result. there is something different in the way dvdxcopy and dvdshrink code the vob files.
If you want, i can post a screen shot for you to see.

| well, voyager2k2, i'm not here to bash dvdshrink or to promote dvdxcopy. I'm only telling you guys my experience.
i use tmpgenc dvd authorize software to edit the vob files and first the vob files must be converted to mpeg-2. The vob files that i got from dvdshrink of the long scene (more than one hour) would break into multiple mpeg-2 files. the vob files of the same scene that i got from dvdxcopy would not break into multiple files when i convert it with the tmpgenc dvd authorize software.
for example => 1:30 min dvd clip generate mpeg-2 file from tmpgenc dvd author:
vob files from dvd shrink to mpeg-2 = one 1.5 gb + one 1.0 gb files. vob files from dvdxcopy to mpeg-2 = one 2.5 gb file.
this is all i'm saying.
now if you can tell me how to get one 2.5 gb file using tmpgenc dvd author and the vob files from dvdshrink, i would most appreciate it because dvdshrink is way much faster than dvdxcopy. I have tried doing that many times but i was never successful.

As some people have noted, DVD Shrink does do both the ripping and the burning (with Nero installed on the system already) - but I still like the results that using the 3 independent programs gives.
I think that 321 Studios is going to end up taking a beating if they continue to try to distribute the X Copy series and then tell people they have to use another program to perform the 1st stage of the process. People are buying those packages to get results with a one-button push. They are not going to be pleased with it. That's besides the point that there are excellent FREE solutions to the problem that do not take an ubergeek to work with. -- Good judgment comes from experience, and experience comes from bad judgment. There's no such thing as DVD+. Do you mean DVD+R? That's just a physical format-- DVD+R and DVD-R have no effect on the actual data.
Now if these discs are homemade you don't need to use a transcoder like DVD shrink. They're under the 4.7GB barrier so you can just go ahead and make an exact copy with Nero or your favorite burning software. No need to use DVD Shrink.
If I had to guess I'd say they had authoring errors, which may be tolerated by a hardware DVD player but may cause DVD Shrink to choke. -- Jimmysquid.com - I take pictures.

| I use DVD X Copy xpress cause i have it and i dont want 2 dvds for one movie. What does that mean? Yes it is compressed and quality isnt as good as a dvd. But if you said a dvd is 10 out of 10 then my compressed movie would be 9 of 10.....so its no big deal.

Edit add: an update from an interview with...
Russell Frackman, a lawyer for the movie studios that brought the lawsuit, questioned whether 321's response was consistent with the spirit of Illston's order.
"You can't sell the product with a wink and a nod and then tell your users, 'What you need to do is get the ripper (descrambling) component ... from another source,'" said Frackman said. "The law generally does not permit one to do indirectly what they can't do directly."

| Tried it a few times, then found better... I've tried DVDXCopy, but I didn't like the notice when I put the disc in the player. Plus, I've got one copy that doesn't get past the FBI warning -- it just sits there. (Frelling Coaster!)
DVDShrink does a nice job for my own backups. I found DVDDecrypter to do a wonderful job of reading DVDs, even damaged ones. And IFOEdit is a must have tool. I spent a whole weekend learning to use these tools, and I'll never bother with DVDXCopy again.
On those episodic discs: rip to HDD with your tool of choice, and then, using IFOEdit, kill the streams of the episodes you don't want on your disc. Voila! High quality copies with no compression.
I discovered all of this because I was trying to backup a DVD before sending it back to the studios because of a bad spot on the disc. Seriously, I paid $100 for a season of a TV show, and am I expected to risk losing 4 episodes if the disc gets lost?

SOoo, some people will always like click & play; that of course won't always work. Nero for one is very poor with DVD-W & excellent with CD-W. Have not run Xcopy.
The cream of the crop for DVD....Free set, well almost
DVDShrink -Free (Limited as he has been bought out, so get it quick!) Anyone remember Gladiator, that fine anti-viral progo? Bought out (Don't all the best fella's!!).
DVDdecrypter-Free
-Both work, better than a bought product.
Then there is my favourite, CopyToDVD, used with shrink. Both work well with CD-W as well.
