The AV, the Tuner, and the Pro
(old news - 09:56AM Thursday Sep 28 2006)
tags: Video · hardware · bandwidth
Zatz Not Funny points out that three new Slingbox models have been officially announced: the $180 Slingbox AV (already mentioned here), the $180 Slingbox Tuner, and the $250 Slingbox Pro. The AV is designed to control a set-top box or DVR remotely via broadband, the Tuner lets you control basic cable, and the Pro essentially combines the AV with two tuners. The author of the original report says he's had the units in his home, and that the video quality via LAN exceeds the original.

Just bought an old slingox

I just bought the original slingbox... I wish I would have waited or I would have bought the Slingbox Pro with the HDMI Dongle to check out the HD signal over LAN/Wireless with this thing.

Re: Just bought an old slingox

I didn't see anything about HDMI dongle, looks like just component unless I missed that somewhere. Everything gets downrezzed to 640x480 on the LAN and the further down even more when streamed remotely.

Re: Just bought an old slingox

The Slingbox Pro has HDMI input, but you have to buy a $49 dongle that turns component RGB cables and audio into a HDMI signal that the box can display.

Re: Just bought an old slingox

From your link " I’m a little concerned about Sling using a standard HDMI interface on the back of the Slingbox since you can’t actually plug in a HDMI source into it"

Seems odd, wonder why they did that..

thanks Karl

I love my old SlingBox. I managed and watched my DVR in NY while I spent a month in Alaska this summer. It worked great, even over wireless LAN in Alaska.

I wonder if the old ones are really going to drop in price now.

Where would one go to find the lowest prices online ?

I would buy it if it worked with my cell phone

I would buy the AV model if I could get software for my Motorola E815 phone to watch the videos....

Software

I like the idea of the slingbox, but the last thing i need is another set top box.

However I do have a retarted amount of TV stored on my Media Server at home, and it would be great to stream it over the LAN/internets.

does anyone know of a software that will downsize the video and operate simalar to the slingbox that i can slap on my media server?

!

I just sold my slingbox to a DSLR member here, glad I did not because it did not work on Mac because I had no problem running Windows on my macbook but because there quality is crap.

Why nobody here talks about HAVA which uses the MPEG-2 encoder unlike Slingbox which uses WM9? Why nobody is talking about those 20-40 dollar TV tuners you can buy off Newegg and simply watch and stream that way?

Slingbox is like some overpriced Kia, it's just not worth it no matter how pretty it looks.

The $20 tuner cards you buy on Newegg will do as good of a job as the Slingbox will. Orb is a nice program if you have the patience to fiddle with it until it works and doesn't crash.

SlingBox simply works

The great thing about SlingBox is that it simply works well.

The company is committed to its simple operation and support and instructions.

They have updated the firmware, the player software, and the remote control emulators. There's a great forum for discussion and help.

One time I had to phone in or get some live online help (I forget which) because I had reconfigured all my LAN equipment and the support person did a great job of helping me out.

I'm very impressed with a system that is so well-integrated. It performs like people say that Macs perform.

The original SlingBox is still available at Buy.com for only $139.99 - which is the best price I've seen for it.

Still going to wait....

This purchase can wait...is this firmware going to be like linksys firmware and mess up every other month of releases on its company website....?
