New Hampshire town tires of Adelphia
(old news - 03:08PM Friday May 30 2003)
tags: alternatives · cable
Tired of lackluster service from Adelphia, the town of Merrimack, New Hampshire, is considering taking matters into their own hands. Spotted on Jim Baller's municipal mailing list, apparently Merrimack residents have been upset for years with long hold times and sub-standard service. Now that Adelphia has added additional speed tiers in the region, consumers there are worried they'll simply be paying higher monthly fees for the same sub-standard service. To that end, the region has begun conducting a feasibility study on starting its own broadband network, while attempting to convince the attorney general’s office to launch an investigation into Adelphia's service (or lack thereof).

Re: FIRST!

I live next door to Merrimack. I have heard nothing but horror stories. Thank god for Verizon and DirecTV.

Oddly enough, for the last two days I have scene large Adelphia trucks and technicians stringing up cable.

Staind, Milford is part of the same initiative. We are in the process of creating a citizen survey. Watch your mailbox.

Municipal Broadband is being investigated by large number of NH towns. Goal is to build a wholesale FTTH network allowing customer choice of service providers.

I'm expecting they will hear from Adelphia, "When we think you need the upgrades, we'll provide them. We know what's best for you" or something very similar.

around here, adelphia has changed the company name to TelCove. the name has changed, but some of the same people are still running the show. i guess they think no one will realize the name change wont hide poor service and executive bonusses. hell, like people wont remember mci as they were once callded worldcom? gimme a break.

comcast "high speed" internet is a joke. just like their level one tech support.

Re: FIRST!

Was that name change for the cable or Adelphia Business Solutions business (or both???)?

Old News

This topic has been here before! This very topic was introduced here on Jan 7 of this year! This thread doesn't appear to offer any new information since back in January! I have not seen anything indicating how the town meeting addressed this issue, if at all! It appears from the newspaper link provided that the idea of the Merrimack building its own system might be dead, because the article includes a statement that it would take years to build a new system! In fact digging around in the links on the newspaper WEB site, was a news article reporting that Adelphia was turning on its new system in the area beginning June 3.

I am just a bit confused as to just what the starter of this discussion had in mind! If a new system is being turned on in a few days, hasn't construction of that new system been going on for the past few months? Doesn't that mean that the people of Merrimack knew that there was a good possibility that "improved" service was just around the corner? Wither that improved service meets their expectations is another matter! Aren't Milford & Merrimack part of the same local Adelphia System?

Well, one thing that's new and right off the bat - in the headline as a matter of fact, is the request to the state AG for an investigation. That was decided last night. That's in addition to the ongoing lawsuit for breach of contract. And Adelphia's suit against other towns for having the nerve not to commit to renewing their franchise (how can I get into a business where I can sue people for refusing to be my customers?)

Strange, I read the article at the link provided, Merrimack is not even mentioned there and no word about the "death" of such ideas.

I have had the service since April 2001 when it was first offered, and I've been hearing about upgrades and promises of improvements since April 2001 when it was first offered. They've had twenty five months for Yog's sake, why should I hold my breath this time?

I know you meant "whether" and not "wither," but "wither" is quite appropriate as far as Adelphia in NH is concerned. Wither they should.

well, that can't go unchallenged!

Adelphia is probably on the phone right now with comcast getting tips and tricks on how to spread lies and misinformation to combat this intrusion on their rights to rip people off.

Well it would be nice is my town would boot Adelphia. And I think Adelphia might have already gone to the comcast school of lying.. They tell my every month my area will be ready for powerlink "next month".

Too many problems

I had, err... was stuck with Adelphia a while back. They couldn't offer two way cable modem service anywhere in the city of Cincinnati Oh. Not to mention that their service totally sucked. Long hold times, and lots of outages. I'm glad that I moved to where I could get DSL and Dish Network.

Why am I crazy?...

I've spent more time than I care to trying to make the same points mentioned in the article over on the PowerLink forum here on BBR, and it seems like Adelphia employees (frequent flyers on that forum) have their own notions about what constitutes service, payment, choice, competition and monopoly. In a word, at Adelphia, apples fall up from the apple tree.

Take a simple question: Adelphia mailed information to every subscriber in town announcing the new tiers. I called the number ON THE POSTCARD and asked about getting the higher tier. The person asked - "What higher tier? What's that?" I apologize for wasting her time and hung up, called again hoping to get another person, which I did. This one knew about it, but according to her, "the information was mailed out too early and by a person who had no authority to mail them." HOW on earth does THAT happen? So I asked, "okay, what do I need to so to sign up for the higher tier?" Answer: "We're not offering that yet, it will be another month or two." Great. Now I read the article mentioned above in YESTERDAY'S paper, and it turns out that it's already in effect. Was anyone ever in more dire need of a gene pool?

Re: Why am I crazy?...

Dumb staff at Adelphia:

It's called a presales flier. They where SUPPOSED to take your name and number to get a "presales" jump on the service.

That was what they did in So. Cal

merr_resident2

@oracle.com

Just an FYI on the Powerlink Tiered service for Merrimack residents. Last week, ok, maybe the week before now, Adelphia contacted the Town and said they were NOT rolling out the service and that a formal letter would be sent to the Town informing them of this.

On June 16th, is when Adelphia showed up at our CATV Committee Meeting and said it WOULD be rolled out, only with the lower level tier dropped from the offerings.

At that time, Adelphia stated that bandwidth tests would be performed at several points in the Town to determine if they higher bandwidth touted in the higher level was actually attainable. No results of those tests were given, only that the service would not be offered.

As for the MBN stuff in Merrimack, its not dead, the survey should be reaching town people this week.

I wish my city would do the same !

I pay $55 plus a month for a service that is just awful! Call and talk to a level 1 tech for the 100th time about my slow speeds he say's yes you have a problem. I ask him what should my speed be 3000/128 LOL he sends me to a level 2 tech. I ask him what my speed should be he won't answer gives me the run around, I tell him what the level 1 tech told me he says oh he's new and does not know! So I ask this tech 2 if he knows of Dslreports? Of course he does I tell him my speed test results he says I wish I could get speed like that well he can have them! 2003-05-31 05:59:03 Speed test (ec) 497/102 kbps
2003-05-30 20:32:58 Speed test (la) 212/56 kbps
2003-05-30 20:27:52 Speed test (ec) 220/51 kbps
2003-05-29 06:47:40 Speed test (la) 378/97 kbps
2003-05-29 06:42:22 Speed test (ec) 434/98 kbps
2003-05-28 12:51:14 Speed test (la) 445/780 kbps
2003-05-28 12:34:18 Speed test (ec) 216/202 kbps
2003-05-27 20:08:04 Speed test (ec) 598/109 kbps
2003-05-27 18:19:37 Speed test (la) 307/62 kbps
2003-05-27 18:14:42 Speed test (ec) 315/63 kbps
2003-05-20 06:22:57 Speed test (ec) 885/102 kbps
So I ask why should I pay X amount for this when someone out in say So.Cal gets 3000/128 and pays the same or less ?
Do you know what this guy tells me we would have to shut your city down for a year to upgrade to achieve speeds like that! So my next question is why did I receive a letter talking about increase of speed for more money when you can't do the job now so you lift my cap a little and charge more! Makes perfect sense!

Gave up..

I gave up on Adelphia 3 years ago. Went to Dish Network for TV and Verizon for DSL 1.5/384. I have been please ever since.

I am in Milford, NH

What gets me is the towns in the area just complain and wine about Adelphia but never do any thing. I say pull the license and force them to tell the local system to a better provider!!
