$2.8 Million in Consumer Penalties Loom for Fairpoint
PUC Offers to Let Them Use Money for Broadband Expansion
by Karl Bode Thursday 31-May-2012 tags: dsl · prices · coverage · business · alternatives · telco
Fairpoint Communications has accumulated a significant chunk of owed penalty payments stemming from their botched integration of Verizon DSL and landline networks in New England. With $2.8 million due all at once on June 1, the New Hampshire state Public Utilities Commission has stated their intention to allow the company to use the funds owed directly to consumers -- to instead be used for broadband expansion obligations in the state. Not all state PUC Commissioners like the idea, Commissioner Michael Harrington highlighting that giving the funds to a company to re-invest in the network -- when regulators tend to fail at following up on where these funds (or any funds, frankly) actually go -- isn't a bright idea. "In my opinion, allowing FairPoint to keep the money and use it for unregulated capital investment sends the wrong message about the purpose of performance penalties," Harrington said.

Re: drop in the bucket, wow

Good, now use the money to bring FiOS (or whatever their brand of FTTH is) to the Biddeford/Saco/Old Orchard Beach areas, although most network upgrades in Maine usually start in Portland and work their way out from there. Verizon Wireless says they're upgrading Maine to 4G and the towers that will probably be brought online first will be in Portland.

Years ago, York county (home of Biddeford/Saco/OOB) used to be extended network on Verizon until they built out their network in York county. Cumberland county (Portland) was always VZW turf.

That'll teach Fairpoint. Don't meet goals and we're going to fine you and make it harder for you to reach them...and ultimately you're just going to bill the customers more anyways to make that $2.8m back. Good thinking.

Lets spend it !

Hmmm, FairPoint is now handling calls for reselling utilities!

That's right, wind power alternative resoures! They now are doing what power (utility) brokers are doing: offering homeowners cheaper utility bills through 3rd party resellers.

I found this out from someone working at FailPoint. I guess management thinks pudding is having call centers that are under utilized (like complaints from customers isn't valid?).

Meanwhile, contract renewed till next Feb...

Any business knows call centers are for generating PROFITS not creating losses. I am surprised Fairpoint even lets the picky, complaining customers talk to a service rep at all; they should just be given the automated system. The harder you make it for customers to complain... the less complaints you will have. The less complaints you have, the better your service is! This is a no-brainer for a large company like Fairpoint.
