Verizon makes some speed changes
(old news - 09:16AM Tuesday Apr 29 2003)
tags: dsl · prices
Customers in our Verizon forum are gleefully reporting that the company is upgrading DSL subscribers in many areas to a higher speed for less money. According to this ongoing thread, customers with 768/128 DSL lines, many of whom are paying $39.95 a month, can have their service upgraded to 1500/128 (for $34.95 a month) with a phone call. The upgrade is apparently only possible for users who are 12,000 feet or closer to their CO. Customers who sign up for the Verizon "Veriations" bundle will pay $29.95 for the 1500/128 service.

Nice...

It's nice to see Verizon raising the level of performance and lowering the cost. I hope that other companies will see this good move, and make it as well.

It sounds good :)

I just got off the phone with billing and they told me within 5 business days my speed will be bumped up to 1.5 down and the new billing of $34.95 will start.

Looks like Verizon is TAKING ADVANTAGE

Of Comcasts STUPID mistake.

Many many people will move to verizon. I know one personally that WAS in the process of moving to comcast, looks like his plans will have changed now.

Not necessarily: many of us don't have a choice. I am living in Comcast land and in an area that has seen thousands of homes built in the last 5 years. Guess what? Verizon never upgraded their lines and DSL isn't available.

It may look that way because you are in that situation, but in many many many places, verizon and comcast are duking it out bigtime. Especially here in the DC area.

You have a newer home are you sure fiber isnt around there?

Sounds great!

I wish Speakeasy would do it. Seems to good to be true for verizon customers. I always feel that when Verizon does something that appears to be good, its because they have something up their sleeve. Well have to wait and see.

Re: Sounds great! -- Not quite

Speakeasy doesn't control or own the lines and the COs, so they can't offer a price break like this. This is what is called a monopoly flexing it's muscle. In order for Speakeasy (who I also have and pay $94 a month for 1500/768) to lower their rates that would mean that Covad would have to get a rate reduction from Verizon and hope that they keep passing the buck back to the consumer.

Re: Sounds great! -- Not quite

This is seen as great by the customer. I still believe that Verizon is truly a large evil corporation that is not doing it to make the customer happy. It looks like a reaction to some of the latest happenings. To lower there rates but continue to sell the same thing to there "ISP" customers at a rate that makes the ISP unable to sell at that price the same speeds. This is truly another effort to eliminate competition.

In the long run this is NOT a good thing for the customer. After elimination of there "partners" what is next? You cannot expect Verizon to offer you that lower rate so they can make less money off of you to make you happy. Less tech support staff, lower cost equipment, more time until repair, etc etc....

Cool!

This upgrade has been long overdue for Verizon customers. The new $34.95 price point that both SBC and Verizon are using is real nice too. SBC is showing it as a promotional price though.

Re: commitment?

With the latest moves DSL providers like SBC and Verizon are making, it will make the choice a little easier for those that have a choice between Cable and DSL.

I still feel DSL is a better connection, given that your lines are descent and you are within reasonable distance. I love my SBC/Ameritech DSL connection. Almost no downtimes and speeds remain constant and reliabe, EVEN DURING PEAK HOURS. The ONLY time I even considered Comcast is due to the lower costs and higher downloads. Now that Comcast has lowered their downloads(not sure why they just dont upgrade their networks and blow DSL completely away) and DSL has lowered their prices its 'almost' a no-brainer to go with DSL, especially gamers since DSL typically has lower pings.

No, no agreements but you do have to call billing. I heard that it will eventually happen to all if you qualify (12000 or less feet from CO) but to be safe I would call in. Even if you don't qualify for the speed bump, you can at least get the new price.

I have been a customer for about 4 months now, and was never required to sign a contract.

The only thing you have to do if you cancel the service within the first year is mail back the modem. They send you a pre-paid shipping label to do so. Otherwise, the modem is yours to keep.

I just got off the phone about an hour ago and had mine upgraded and my price for it cut. In about 4 to 8 business days I will have the Advanced DSL Service from Verizon for $5 less than I am paying now. Quite a deal for 34.95! Thanks Verizon!!

move in the right direction?

this appears to be a significant mover towards lower and more competitive pricing - unfortunately, I can't get VOL!

the next step they have to take is to upgrade their equipment so they can reach more customers. until they do this, this is just an exercise that may or may not lower pricing from competitors.

Maybe they are seeing if they can draw customers away from Comcast; if successful, they will upgrade to bring more customers into their service area.
At least it seems to be a step in the right direction.

No static, but if you have a router, it holds your IP. Some areas don't even use PPOE. I just connect via DHCP.

I don't care

As long as I can't get DSL, I'm going to make sure that SBC(Same Bull Crap) loses money on my phone line. Just keep switching back and forth from SBC to a CLEC and get them to bribe me back each time. This guarantees losses for SBC on my line. Want it to stop? Give me DSL.

Eastcoaters only??!!

Hey, I just read through the whole posting on Verizon Forum, and everyone who's getting it seems to be east coast!

Any news for us west coast people?? How do we figure out if we are ATM or Frame-Relay? By modem type or by service? I have DHCP 768/128 with a Fujitsu modem. What does that make me?

I wouldn't mind the bump to full t1 down and $5 less a month, but if the are not going to up my speed I won't change anything. I can only hope that this is a Verizon thing that stays around and doesn't go up in pricing...

Id post this in the Verizon forum but I don't think it will be seen and answered.

Just called and they changed my Pricing from $59.99 to $34.99. I already had the 1500/128 plan (being less then 4000 feet from the CO is sweet =P.

Thanks to all who posted the info here to let me know about the price changes as the new price is very nice =P

Ok, well I called the billing number I found in the forums (it's actually the wrong number, it's for east coast only) and they checked if it's available on the west coast.

In the forums a guy from Perris CA seems to have gotten it...but he already qualified and had 1.5/128, so they just lowered his price.

Anyway, after transferring me to a "billing specialist" (most likely on the west coast) and some line checking, they decided that my line did not qualify for the speed increase so I could just get the lower rate only. Hmm, $5 less a month equals $60. That's like getting a month and a half free a year. Just wish I could have gotten the 1.5 down!

So any of you other westcoasters that don't already have 1.5 down, don't expect to get it unless the CO is next door!

More Speed, Less Dough

I know that I am close enough to my CO but last I checked Verizon isn't offering it's "Veriations" package in California yet and I've been paying about $70.00 per/mo for that same service!!!!!!!!!

Re: More Speed, Less Dough

Well, I've found a provider here in Hayes, VA which I'm pretty sure that I can get the DSL from another company other than Verizon...1500/768 for 39.99 a month. It beats Verizon's 1500/128 for 49.99 a month. One problem I am going to face is getting Verizon to run the line out here from the CO. I am 22,000ft from the CO and the Tech Limit is 20,000ft - Perhaps they can boost the line a bit by spending some money to boost the signal?!

I'll probably have to pay for the line running myself (Should be fun to know what that will cost)

I know which 1500/768 companies your talking about.. And at 22,000 feet from the CO, no matter what you/they do, you will NOT be able to get service.

@verizon.com
I do believe they are offering DSL bundle now in CA. The Freedom bundle (unlimited long distance) is not quite there yet... Have you called cust service lately? Or is it just not in your area.

Watch out AOL

With Verizon's obvious genious stroke at marketing, AOL dail up service is in BIG trouble along with Comcast. Vreizon's move will really bring in customers once they go public with these new rates.
Its about time that these vital services start becoming affordable.....Good going Verizon and thanks for the savings!!

Why would anyone choose $23.95 AOL dial up over $29.95 1.5/128 (with a Veriations discount) now. It's a good move.

Re: Watch out AOL

Well maybe if they can't get DSL. Of course, if you can't get DSL then you have a 19th century phone line WHICH THE RBOCs SHOULD BE OUTLAWED FROM PROFITING ON. IT SHOULD BE ILLEGAL FOR AN RBOC TO MAKE A PROFIT OFF OF A PHONE LINE THAT CAN'T GET DSL. Why anybody would spend $23.90/month on a worthless phone line is beyond me. If you can't get DSL, you should be really sticking it to your RBOC, and make sure they don't make a profit. Plus, why would you spend $23.90/month for your ISP. If you can't get DSL, you shouldn't be spending over $10/month for internet access. IT ISN'T WORTH 1 CENT MORE THAN THAT.
