| Covad signing up all the big players
Sprint, AOL, and at least 2 different divisions of ATT. I like how Covad is signing up all the big players, and establishing DSL as a viable nationwide alternative to cable internet. So far I'm very pleased with my Covad.net service, much better than MediaOne (then ATT Broadband, now Comcast) ever was.

I would never out right give something away for free that is not smart business. -- So many pretty buttons.

I was wondering the same thing. If this agreement means that COVAD will have a presence wherever the old Northpoint switches were located, I'll actually have an option for DSL service (that will be a first!).

| voice over DSL too? I wonder... AT&T *could* use the Covad DSL circuits for voice-over-IP so they could offer local telco service bypassing the ILEC entirely (except for the dry wire loop). Seems like it wouldn't take much of a grey-box to do this, mounted outside by the MPOE, it could convert the VoIP to 1 or 2 POTS circuits and wire them up to the existing house wiring, then break out the internet service as 10baseT ethernet run over 2 pair of cat3+ run to the home 'office' location where the internet connection is desired. This would be just as simple as the current method of putting the 'DSL modem' at the computer location... | |

| Re: voice over DSL too? What you are thinking of is Voice over dsl, not Voip. For voice over dsl no internet or pc is needed, all calls run over the dsl line and are then switched via att's class 5's back onto the POTS. Other necesary equipment is an integrated access device in the consumers home, and a residential gateway in the co between the class 5's and the dslam. And yes as you see here Att plans on using covad's network for local phone service. »dslhelp.att.net/faq/blackline/CA···line.htm
AT&T Local Service is currently only available with AT&T DSL Service and is not provided in your state as a separate service. AT&T Voice over DSL Service means telephone service that is carried on high-speed data services and is separate from standard AT&T Local Service. In AT&Ts Web site and marketing materials, Voice over DSL is referred to as Additional Lines provided by AT&T DSL Service. Voice over DSL Service requires specialized customer premises equipment, which AT&T will make available for you to purchase in order to provide the Voice over DSL capabilities if you decide to sign up for Voice over DSL.
