802.11g Hardware Arrives
Buffalo technology first on the scene
(old news - 07:11PM Monday Dec 30 2002)
tags: competition · wireless · hardware
There's been quite a scramble as networking companies the world over rush to be the first to bring their 802.11g wireless gear to market. Linksys missed their early December launch date, and a company named Buffalo Technology has risen to steal their thunder. The company today issued a press release announcing their AirStation G54 broadband router access point and wireless CardBus adapter, the first 802.11g draft standard hardware to hit the market. More information can be found at the company's website.

Bankruptcy around the corner if...

The 802.11g standard changes significantly...

said by Buffalo Technology Website:

NOTE TO OUR CUSTOMERS:

As you may know, IEEE802.11g is slated to be certified by the Wi-Fi Alliance in mid 2003. We understand this could affect current 802.11g technology. We are dedicated to ensuring that our customers have the most current and reliable products available on the market today. If the certification materially changes the principal operating features of our pre-standard 802.11g products, we will replace or upgrade any of those products at no charge and provide toll-free technical support. We thank you for your loyalty and confidence in our products.

could just be a firmware upgrade? If then they only have to publish it on their page and have people download it.

That's only if there are small modifications... If they have to change the signaling properties, etc., then they will have some problems.

Pre-draft equipment is always a no-no.

Don't we all just love linksys?

Quote from article: (Wagner = Linksys rep)
"I don't think it's premature to release 802.11g devices... "Minor modifications, if they come, can be addressed in software or firmware updates."

And who here has ever dealt with buggy Linksh*t firmware?

Oh great, just what we need another piece of half-standard quirky hardware! Thanks Linksys!

I guess the people who ran out and got 802.11a HW are a bit pissed eh?

I don't see why you should be angry... I mean, Linksys has been talking about selling their 802.11g products for over a month now on their website, not to mention it has been talked about on the wireless networking forum, so you should of known it was coming. Besides, would you really trust the first version of anything? Regardless, what brand... and the g standard has not been set yet, so things will most likely change. If you want to be able to set up a LAN and wireless LAN at home NOW, then you got what you felt was the best solution available now, nothing wrong with that!

Except it costs twice as much as it would have. Regardless of what standard he has...it doesn't matter unless you expand...and even then only if you use a competitor's components. As it sits now, perhaps it would be the perfect security solution for home networking as the components are cheap enough not to care about HW competition with price. And if the standard changes, perhaps that would just mean that 12 year old Johnny next door is going to have a harder time serving games with your BB connection.

You got 802.11a. Be happy. You have better range, higher bandwidth, and less interference (5Ghz vs. 2.4Ghz) than the 802.11g.

Re: For under $130?

Actually, 2.4ghz will see longer range than 5ghz. I mean, it depends a lot on power output as well, but you're going to see about 1/2 the range out of 802.11a vs 802.11b

Yeah, the higher the frequency the greater the chance of interference.

I mean in terms of 802.11g vs. 802.11a
Check this out:

I forget where the article was that I read, but it showed that the bandwidth of the 11a card was consistent to the edge of it's shorter range, but 11g, dropped at a fast rate the further away from the accesspoint you went. 5Ghz (for slashdot14) actually has lower interference for now.

I make no claims to be an expert, I just read stuff from magazines and I'm waiting to buy a nice AP soon as well.

Re: For under $130?

Interference now is caused by other devices generating radiation in the same frequency range. Currently there are more devices generating noise in the 2GHz range than the 5.

Who cares if they're pissed. I once payed near $100.00 for a credit card calculator and now you get one for free from darn near anybody. It's the way things are.

A few questions...

Are you a financial analyst? What experience do you have with Buffalo and the parent company? Are you aware of the percent these products represent in total company sales? Are you just 'trying' to be funny?

How did you become a forum moderator?

What/who the hell are you talking about? Seeing as Melco's (Buff's parent) net income has already been halved between 2000 and 2001, and only through a bit of culinary accounting are they magically showing an increase in profit (again, where none exists according to Melco's financial statement), it's not a long leap to know what is going to happen to a BRAND NEW subsidiary (Buffalo is less than 3 years old) if it costs the parent a boat load of cash its 2nd year because they jump the gun releasing what amounts to be experimental hardware.

And let us not forget, the Japanese economy is on the verge of a total and UTTER collapse (like it isn't already). The Nikkei just had it's lowest year end close in 20 years and the Japanese banking collapse makes the US S&L crisis look like no crisis at all.

Re: A few questions...

I use a Buffalo Airstation 802.11b bridge between my wired/wireless network. It was very inexpensive, easy to setup, does 64-bit and 128-bit WEP (not that it really matters), MAC authentication. I have been using it for more than a year, possibly 18 months now. I have not had any problems, haven't even looked into updating the firmware. The product I am using was definitely the best bang for my buck!

Wireless-G products

Users has nothing to lose with 802.11g products with little risk: same features, higher performance, no major upgrade, etc for a same price as 802.11b products.

Compare to upgrade cost from Cisco, Intel, and Symbol, this is a minimum risk to end users.

Firmware is upgradable and will work with final standard.

WBR-G54 wirless dustbin

I just acquired one of these pieces of junk. It seems to be incompatible with all of my adsl modems (ok I have only 2) and there technical support suggest I buy yet another (no guarentees!) to work with there firmware. I have contacted the adsl modem manufacturers with buffalos' views and look forward to there replies.
As it stand the darn thing does not work (for more than 60 second... honest!) so I am going to return if for my money back (In the UK thats £110 - roughly $150).
Dont buy it unless the firmware is upgraded again soon - by the way the screens are total rubbish - cant understand the install instructions (I read computer manuals for a living!). Buffalo may just have proved that you should stick with well known names not some half baked startups.
