An estimated 269,868 vehicle owners in Tarrant County are driving without insurance, according to figures released Tuesday by the Texas Department of Insurance.

The county has 1.28 million registered vehicles — meaning that about 21 percent of vehicles in the greater Fort Worth/Arlington area are uninsured. That’s lower than the statewide average of 22 percent.

But it’s a different story in Dallas County, where 481,877 vehicles are uninsured. That’s nearly 26 percent of the 1.87 million total registered vehicles in that county.

Overall, the percentage of vehicles believed to be uninsured statewide has dropped from 25 percent in June 2008. That’s when the state launched the TexasSure database, which helps police verify liability coverage.
