I agree. Hopefully, customers will start canceling in droves to protest this crappy service. Hitting Cox (a kick in the nuts?) in the pocketbook will force them to make good on their promises. Any other form of complaining to Cox is useless. -- Proud to be an American infidel.

I agree Bill. The hsi Cox customers got their own forum while the other 90-95% of Cox customers (mainly cox-internet) are perfectly happy with our service and connections, but we have no forum to post in.
Also, Cox in general continues to get average and above average ratings from reviews. Cox-internet cable was in the top 25 cable companies in the comparison listings but because of all the negative reports from hsi and nova, they have dropped back out of the top 25 (the "good" ones).
If they are going to have a separate forum then I think the reports should be separated out also.

| Re: Equal time please you know, it did show a bunch of red for a while...... until we got tired of it. there have been about 3000 posts on this site(and still rising) concerning ONLY the crappy service in NoVA, from back when roadrunner was here, continuing through when cox kicked them out. Not to mention that fairfax county is one of, if not THE richest county in the US (per capita). That cox is doing such a bad job in the area (considering the $$) is surprising. Service HAS been getting better for some in the area, including me, but it has been getting WORSE for many others. I cant place all the blame on cox, however. Media general left them with the crappiest system to upgrade. Considering, i think we HAVE had an equal amount of time/posts on this site compared to our crappy service. Im sure you've heard it, but come to NoVA and see for yourself. Either you will be fine, like me, and avoid complaining, or you will have the worst service you can imagine for months on end, with maybe a week or two of good service stuck in. -- "We own the night." -Ding Chavez (Ninja) | |

| Re: Equal time please I have had Cox since April and have had nothing but problems with it since. I live in Herndon, VA and I think it really sucks that if you want cable internet they are the only company you can get it through. The day they came to hook up our service the tech brought a modem gave it to us told us he didnt have any cable long enough to reach and we would have to get our own and hook it up. Not knowing any better at the time we did this. We have had about 6 or 7 techs out since to try to fix our service. Our internet goes out about 20 to 30 times a day for at least a minute each time. Now it has been two days (since Sunday) that we have had no service at all. We call customer service they always try to make it sound like it is our problem not theirs and they cant send someone out until Wednesday. Every time a tech comes out they tell us it is not our problem that it has something to do with upgrades or router problems every person has a different excuse. It seems there should be some way to take this higher than the crappy customer service that you get when you call. Shouldnt their be some lawsuits or something for paying for a service that you are not receiving (granted they give us credits for the days that we call in but thats only if we have the time to take to call them every day and complain and go through the same story over and over again and get transferred around). If anyone knows what I can do about this or where I can file official complaints with the county or COX or wherever I need to go please email me at cbrubeck@cox.net and let me know. I am so frustrated. I am on dial up right now because we have no service. I had to sign up for the free AOL trial just to be able to get online when they charge $50 a month for a service I dont have. Could that be because Cox deserves to be blasted? I live in Northern VA, and the disgust of having to deal with Cox is what has driven me to DSL and what is slowly driving me to get a satellite dish.

| Charter In My Area I'm in southwest VA and we have Charter. I went back to dial up because it was faster. My ping times were about the same as Cox in NOVA. Probably a tad faster though. My average ping time was 1200ms with 33% packet lost. This was with 384k. I went back to the 56k dialup because that's about the speed I was getting and it was only $10 a month.
Point of this? Yes COX is bad, but they aren't the only ones with the same problem. The whole attitude is wrong. Well we are the only ones that can provide this service. So take it or leave it. I understand why they don't want to upgrade because of the costs. HOWEVER, do NOT mislead your customers with ads of 15x faster than dialup. Because it's NOT. | some inside info Some years back in the beginning days of cable internet before @home came into existance many local cable facilities were channelling entire cities with as little as 2 T-1's (3Megabits). It was a sham. Jones cable was cutting contracts for commercial use that were not even enforcable. packet loss was often 100% during the day. Funny thing. They had fiber running to most buildings yet everyone bottlenecked at the mercy of 2 t-1 circuits. Its a shell game that is probably being repeated once again in this case.

| I fully believe those results...
I lived with Cox cable's "high speed" internet service in Lorton, VA for ten months because DSL wasn't available.
I saw four digit ping times and 70 to 80 percent packet loss on a fairly regular basis during my last month or two of service. Cox probably wound up crediting me for at least three months of service during the 10 months I had it. I learned not to even bother calling on some nights during high peak times because usually if I waited an hour or two things smoothed out. For the first two months (July and August 2001) it was down (no connection at all) more than it was up.
I have to admit that for about three months (from February to April 2002) that the service was pretty solid and reliable. I don't think I had to call tech support one time. Then Cox made the wonderful transition from Road Runner to their own managed network and the service was worse than ever. Then they actually had the audacity to send out an email telling their customers that they'd be instituting a $5 rate hike due to the "upgrade" in service.
I finally got fed up back in May when my connection had been so bad for a solid month that I could litteraly connect to dial-up and get a faster connection. Cox first sent a technician out to "fix" my problem and the guy didn't even know what a ping was, and then they subsequently told me two days later that I'd have to wait up to two more weeks (after already dealing with a bad connection for almost a month) because they couldn't get a key to the junction box outside my apartment. That was a pretty sorry excuse.
They're so sad that they disabled my account three months ago and while my primary email account got disabled, one of my other ones still works to this day. Not that I use it, but I think it's pretty funny that they can't even kick someone off of their service.
I've been on Earthlink DSL for about three months now and haven't seen a glitch out of it. Thank God that nightmare of an internet service is over forever!!!!
I'd say that if Cox has a bad rep in NOVA they've earned it. I personally know others that have the same horror stories in other parts of the county. [text was edited by author 2002-08-09 17:41:22]
