VeriSign Sued Over Deceptive Letters
Expiration letters ruled as misleading
(old news - 04:22PM Wednesday May 15 2002)
tags: legal · business
The act of sending out official looking "expiration warning letters" to domain owners in the hopes of tricking them into switching to your company is nothing new. One such recent campaign by VeriSign has been brought to a halt by a U.S. District Judge who late Tuesday ruled that Verisign and their marketers must cease sending such letters to their competitor's customers.

That's Dirty

But almost all buisnesses do it. I think that they caught up on it because it has to deal with security, and to threat of cancellation is a bit overboard if you ask me. Why not just do what the credit cards do?

Re: That's Dirty

I never expected something so deceptive from a company like Verisign. Maybe a run of the mill spammer but not Verisign. I have about 20 domains with different registars and some with Verisign. So I ended up getting about 8 letters by regular mail and around 15 emails.

At first I thought these must be the renewals for the domains I have with them. The letters really misled you to believe they were my registar. So I had to keep going back and check my spreadsheet to see who I have with them and what the expiration dates actually are. I really stay on top of things and this one almost really got me. So I can only imagine the millions of users that got duped into transferring to them.

This deceptive shit really pisses me off so I am transferring anything I have from Verisign. Hopefully the lawsuit will make up for the profits they made in duping people.

Almost got me

I received one of those letters and was "this" close to renewing my domain name with them. Thank god I have a severe case of procrastination which allowed me the time to think and realize that they weren't the company I had originally registered with. Dirty bastards!

no, he was just too lazy to write down who he orginally registered with, nothing wrong with that

Same here. Except I had email along with the snail. The deceptiveness level they used here is the problem.

A decent warning stating that your web hosting from [fill in blank] and you need to take action. If you want we also do this and why we are better and what we offer.

NOT your web address is about ready to be canceled and you must pay use right now!

I can see the first but they use the 2nd one and is very stupid and will cost them more in the long run.

I have them just for web address with web forwarding. Those jokers really ding you for every thing now and looks like you get one price but add it up and get another. Will switch next time it pop up.

For example I do not need their $12 single page web hosting. Went nuts with their messages about my site still going to die bit even with my months left being in the future!

Either they have major internal problems or they are a problem.

It's nice to see they're getting stopped

Now if we can get them fined to the point where it's not work doing this cr@p again...that's a different story.

That's The Internet

It seems that the "anything goes" attitude is right across the internet. It's like the wild west was 100 years ago.

I hope those who paid up in error get a class action law suite against VeriSign and get their money back plus give VeriSign a whole bunch of grief and expense. Maybe that will make other companies think twice before trying a similar scam.

I keep getting similar junk but not from anyone who looks legitimate enough to make me think twice before junking it.

But who's suing them over their crappy T-Shirts?

Yeah. I got seven of the letters. Outraged at the first, but resigned by the last. After all, they're big. Big like Microsoft. With big lawyers. So I shrugged it off. Another injustice in the world of technology. What can us little guys do.

But, you know, maybe things are changing. And on a grass-roots level like all societal shifts. Now Verisign's the object of negative attention and legal action. And Microsoft is arguing with Judges (and Peru), with more action promised in the EU. (Yes, it rhymes.)

Meanwhile Open Source continues to thrive and grow, and open community wi-fi networks are sprouting up like daisies. Hmmm...has the revolution already begun?

-Tim

And no, I've never worn those damn T-Shirts they sent me (mydomain.com). But I do use them to wax the car. Didn't cost nothin'.

My client was tricked...

..into "renewing". Only problem was the original registrar had included other services as well, such as URL forwarding DNS service etc..

Once the transfer went through, my client's website went dead.

I think my client is entitled to damages from this fraud for lost business, and VeriSign should face CRIMINAL charges for this!
