AT&T: 'If you don't want it, we won't force you to buy it'
(old news - 03:58PM Thursday Sep 20 2007)
tags: dsl · prices · competition · business · telco · AT&T Midwest · AT&T Southwest
AT&T's CEO Randal Stephenson recently attacked forced DSL/local phone bundling as "an old mind-set" as the company promotes a new bundle that includes 1.5Mbps DSL and wireless service (450 minutes) for $60 per month. While that deal is only currently good in seven markets as part of a "trial," AT&T's Ralph de la Vega tells the Wall Street Journal that the plan should be available nationally by the end of the year.
Ralph de la Vega, AT&T's group president for regional telecommunications and entertainment, said in some parts of the country, the company is no longer requiring customers to buy land-line voice service in order to get a discounted rate on high-speed Internet access. He says: "Our point of view is, if you don't want it, we won't force you to buy it." The plan will be available nationwide by the end of the year."
There's an awful lot of talk coming from AT&T executives about killing off forced bundling for a company that still doesn't offer the majority of its DSL tiers as a standalone purchase. And while the DSL/wireless bundle is at least useful, it still "forces" users to buy two services at once. AT&T will be offering a 768kbps "naked" DSL tier sometime in the next few months in order to comply with the BellSouth merger conditions.

At the same time you can get your 6mb cable internet without paying a penalty for not having TV service. Personally, I hate this forced bundling crap or the idea you are going to have to pay more to get the service if you don't want another service.

I never been forced by my cable company to have TV. The internet is same price as without tv service. The way it should be.

My guess would be that your provider prices the services in a manner which recovers plant maintenance costs from all subscribers (TV and Internet).

Additionally, I would guess that AT&T could redistribute plant maintenance cost recovery by lowering POTS prices while raising DSL prices. If they so chose...

Probably on the same day that I can get Comcast cable HSI for $42.95 per month without having to buy their "Basic TV" package for $13.41 per month.

Karl..when you get around to it..

how about seeking out some OFFICIAL clarification as to whether it has to be bundled with wireless now..or whether it will ALSO be sold as a 23.99 standalone..naked DSL service.

As you may know..Ct. customers are stating they're getting it as a standalone product.
It's not clear however..whether some of those posters already have wireless.

I don't want a pots or wireless phone! Just Internet access!

But I am forced to buy some sort of phone service!

... or be forced to pay more for the same service:

The prices in this site »promo.yahoo.com/att/packages.html

are different if you don't have phone service with AT&T.

BASIC DSL is NOT available on a dry loop.
EXPRESS DSL costs $45 on a dry loop.
PRO DSL is $60 on a dry loop.
ELITE DSL is NOT available on a dry loop.

Re: if you don't want it, we won't force you to buy it.

It isn't just at&t.

I have Insight (Soon to be Comcast) cable service. Basic, plain ol' service and it is $48 per month. Their web site advertises it for $30 but it is only if I buy one more of their other services.

I showed their folks that what I presently use from other vendors is a better value than theirs (whether mere price or price + function to be apples:apples).

They agreed...BUT...I am stuck and paying $48.

They all want in your pocket...only question is what path they will travel to get there.

Not true I have Insight Cable modem only for years it's 44.99 and it's the same price without TV. If you bundle it with Cable you get a 10.00 discount on Internet which brings it down to 34.99.

You can get the $30.00 a month for a year without Tv or any service if you ask nicely. But it's only for new customers usually.

I'm uncertain which part of what I said falls under your "not true" assertion.

My point was that companies drive their discounts to whatever combination of things they want to sell and I used the lure of a lower cable bill being available to me only if I would buy something else that I already have for a lower cost from a different vendor.

Was I to be swayed because you compare your cable modem with my cable television?

Uh, it didn't work.

Ever hear of discounts for buying multiple services from the same vendor. It has been standard business practice for 200 years. And bundling is all that is.

Once agian...

Promises of a extravagant rollout to "everyone". Recall project Pronto? I do.

Let's see how many stipulations are listed under this stunt, and how many of their ILEC's are exempt from this.

I'm still waiting at&t.

They should make it a bundle for any DSL package

I'd love to be able to dump POTS and get wireless. However I'm not going to "Downgrade" my DSL from 6.0/640 to 1.5/384 etc

They should make this "bundle" available to anyone who has their DSL service. IE current level of DSL plus this Wireless package for say $20 above DSL price.
