According to one Nokia Exec
(old news - 10:15AM Tuesday Jun 14 2005)

A Nokia executive tells Silicon.com that 2006 will be the year your mobile connection outpaces your home broadband line. According to Nokia, the arrival of HSDPA (high speed downlink packet access) - software to tweak 3G - should bring about speeds of 14Mbps on mobiles. Of course third generation solutions need to be deployed before you can tweak them.

LOL!

I love the editorial comments.

14Mbps sounds great but the three questions on everyones mind is latency, upstream bandwidth and dare I mention cost?

14 Mbps doesn't do much good if its $250 a month after all.

What about all that speed in a 3" by 2" screen. That's how I want to be blazing through the internet...

Exactly. Still have to pay for airtime, I would think.

Re: Yes, let me tell everyone on my ATT vidphone..

If there was still AT&T as it was in the early 90's you would have had that by now. Alas, there isn't. What remains is a pathetic shadow of a company that once cared about its people and its customers, where technical excellence was once valued and executives knew what was going on because they were home-grown, not in some MBA idiot farm.

Re: Yes, let me tell everyone on my ATT vidphone..

my point is I've been promised the moon many times in the past....but I still have no moon. I'll believe 14mbps when I actually use it.

In the meantime I can promise 100mbps over wireless....or any speeds for that matter.

Re: Yes, let me tell everyone on my ATT vidphone..

True. What Nokia ignores is the time, money and will it would take to upgrade or build infrastructure to support such speeds. It will certainly be further than 2006.

I was just rambling about AT&T. It's a sour spot for me.

They've been promised longer than that, I saw one in 1964 at the worlds fair. Epcot has em too if memory serves.

The 90s, were full of forward thinking companies, AT$T, Bell Atlantic/NYNEX(For their Fiber plans). Hell if we still had Bell Atlantic I'd have DSL by now, maybe even FiOS. Buy outs and mergers screwed this up. Bell Atlantic is now Verizon, and they suck. AT&T, was bought by SBC. We're Fu*ked...

500 kbps here now...

EVDO works pretty well -- if you can stomach paying Verizon $45 / month ON TOP of their high cell plan charges.

Hey, that logo's the new Samsung -- anybody know when it's coming out?

My Treo 600 goes slow, with Cingular GPRS, however with discount it's only an extra $16 a month for unlimited. My need for high bandwidth on a 2-4" LCD with microscopic keyboard is pretty limited.

The point is that a Bluetooth-enabled cell phone can be used as a 'wireless modem' for your laptop, where you can appreciate 14mbps speeds.

Re: 500 kbps here now...

Yeah,
But my point is I don't want to carry around a laptop, with a small screen broadband doesn't help much. I've got a laptop, a net enabled cell phone, and broadband. Each is nice, however the laptop doesn't fit in my shirt pocket, doesn't provide cell phone service, and has no integrated photo / video camera.

I forgot about BT's limiation, but still.

They make PC-cards for connecting to the cell networks. There's even a new Sony laptop that has a slot for a SIM card in it.

Perhaps in the future, laptops can have built-in HSDPA radios in addition to WiFi.

Re: 500 kbps here now...

Well, my point was sometimes you want a small browser in your pocket, and when you do, high bandwidth while nice, may not be as important. Cost becomes a concern, Cingular charges for example by line, in our family we have 2 lines enabled for unlimited internet, cost is about $32. My understanding is this would be about $160 with Verizon, BUT Verizon would get high speed. If I traveled often and wanted high speed in a laptop this would appeal more. It really depends on what they are marketing to.

No, it can't. Current BlueTooth maxes out at 721 kbps, nowhere near 14 Mbps.

Apparently even with EVDO, if you wish to use the cell phone as a wireless modem, Verizon will charge you an additional $80 per month in addition to the additional $45 per month for the phone's data service in addition to the $50 or more per month for their cell phone plan.

That's an awful lot of cash for a 512 kbps wireless connection.

Re: 500 kbps here now...

Ouch, Cingular doesn't seem to mind my tethering a laptop to my phone for occasional in hotel surfing. When traveling, I'm willing to accept analog modem speed as there is no need for major downloading / uploading.

I'm unsure how secure GPRS is vs wireless in a hotel or shared broadband.

Nope they won't. I have the audiovox XV6600 PocketPC with EVDO and with the $45 a month plan you can tether it to your laptop with USB or use bluetooth and end up with EVDO speeds using a free utility called wmodem. I haven't heard of anyone being cut off, aside from people attempting to run a server or DLing many many gigs of data. In that case they were just told to pay the $80, in leiu of the $45, not on top of the $45. Many people are using their XV6600's to access streaming video and music broadcasted from their home computer, and some I have heard of even using VoIP. Trust me, once you have EVDO you won't want to go back.

Re: 500 kbps here now...

Thanks, helix. I got a different impression from reading the forums, but I'll take your word for it on those corrections. (By the way, $80 is still completely insane. )

I'm interested in seeing how the new Samsung compares to your Audiovox, which has been the only real game in town. There have been substantial rumors that they may NOT cripple away the Samsung's built in 802.11.

Re: 500 kbps here now...

Well I can tell you now that the Samsung i730 is closer in size to a Treo, with an external antenna. The screen is smaller, though both are 320x240. The Samsung will have a consumer grade IR transmitter. It has 64MB of RAM and 128MB ROM, where with the 6600 the reverse is true. Supposedly there will be an upgrade path to WM2005 but given Samsung's history with the i700 we'll have to wait and see. The i730 will have WiFi and EVDO. The nice thing about the 6600 is it is an HTC and much of the support available by Blue Angel owners applies to us Harrier owners as well.

Yeah! great business model. Am going to be your competition! Unfortuntaly my Treo 650 server resets perioically for no apparent reason as I fudged around with the firmware. + I agree with the comment above that blazing speeds on a small screen are not doing us any good. Unless there I Live TV or Playboy launches a LIVE video feed.
Am not even going to go to the 'My thumb is hurting from typing this post thing' story.

Heh Yeah Right! :)

Heheh I will believe it when I see it! Very lofty goals and claims though. I guess that can be a good thing to set your sights high.

BTW - In regards to the Treo 650 resetting issue... Exchange that thing in a local store as soon as you can. It's a known problem and they will replace it with the new ones with the correct firmware. If it's with Cingular - E-Mail me at the address in my profile for more help if needed.

A solution for Broadband availability?

This is the most Viable way to solve broadband availability. Think of it. You can get cell phone service almost everywhere. And projecting a semi-viable Broadband service through this cell phone spectrum would be genious. Even if it were 500k, it'd be better then dial-up and sattelite. Is anyone thinking of this?
