| dunno i love how communities are taking action and servicing themselves with internet, but this seems to make the community rely more and more on the gov't for commodities. i guess we'll just have to wait and see how well of a service is provided and how far this "trend" will go. | |

| Also trying to be done here Something like this is also in the talks/works here in Taylor,TX with trying to setup a wireless city wide network. Durring the first year it would only be used by the city and then after local residents could subscribe to the service.. but I wouldn't trust anything they try to do to actually work... (you'd have to be a local)

| City of Tacoma has been doing this for years City of Tacoma in Washington State has been doing this for years. It's called the Click! Network (»www.click-network.com ). They not only provide cable tv access, but also cable internet and broadband (t1 and above) for businesses. More importantly they allow outside ISP's to resell the cable internet service. Before Click was around, you'd have a hell of a time getting cable tv service (or any kind of service for that matter!) from the cable incumbent (Currently At&t). If anything, the city has encouraged competition. More cities and communities should do it in my opinion. | |

| Good discussion I'm so happy to see this discussion picking up speed here. I had only been aware of a few communities that had already gotten involved in building high speed networks. Its interesting to see the many different ways different communities have approached meeting this need for their constituents. The private sector seems to spend so much time keeping things proprietary and "protecting their investment" that huge numbers of us go unserved, or have no choice but to accept poor service. I really like what Tacoma is doing by opening up the infrastructure to competitors. Anyone in Tacoma care to comment on how well its working? Do you get good service? Has the competition kept prices down and service levels up? I'm really curious to learn more about what has worked and what hasnt' in other places.
The community I live in (Geneva)seems to be off to a very strong start. If what they've done here in the past is any indication we'll end up with a great network for cable phone and internet at great prices, whether its completely run by the tricity authority or not.
