I agree - in my experiences, a USB connection is unreliable and inferior (ESPECIALLY for a DSL modem). I was somewhat interested in the demo on the Ericsson website until I saw them hawking the "easy-to-use" USB connection - noooo way!

| That's not why TW's going to pick the USB modem. They'll pick that modem because it's easier for non-experts to install. Same with the USB DSL modems that some providers are using. You plug it in and go. The more hardware involved (cable modem and ethernet card), the more points of failure for TW to deal with on the customer service side.
Just because you think you're the most important user, doesn't make it so. Most of TW's cable modem users don't even know what Ethernet is. Stop being paranoid over it.

@popsite.net | vpd56, on the demo there are 2 ports on the modem, one for usb and one for ethernet. I just checked out the demo. So, I guess you have a choice now and time warner doesn't have a choice to cut down on home LANs.

| Read more carefully before jumping to conclusions.
It has a USB and a 10BaseT interface. Look at the product guide.

@hsacorp.net | This is being posted via a beta PipeRider. It has both USB and ethernet connections. It's a fast, reliable modem, and it looks a lot better than the Com21 that's sitting beside on my desk.

| Re: Where to purchase? Why would you want to own your own cable modem??
When TW provides it they have to maintain it. If lightning kills it like it has done to mine twice TW replaces it for no charge. If I would have owned it I would of had to bought 2 new ones already...

| Re: Where to purchase?
That's why you usually get warranties with the products you purchase.
Why would I want to buy one? First, then I am eligible for a discount on cable service from Time Warner which I would otherwise be paying for a monthly rental. Secondly, I get to choose the modem I want, not the modem they want to give me. But that's only my preference, renting might be a better option for you!

You can't change any settings on the modem so why does it matter which modem you have?? You want one that looks cooler??

| Re: Where to purchase?
One that looks cool is a plus, but not what I look at first. Main thing is it should work! For example, for DSL I was unable to make the Efficient Speedstream to ever work, but Westell WireSpeed worked right out of the box. I also want a modem that will be able to connect to an ethernet hub, or better yet work on my Linksys router.

| Anon | I have hundreds of customers with the Ericsson Piperider cable modem, and without exception, they ALL suck! Slow, unreliable, flimsy, junk! I am also a RoadRunner reseller, and I tell people to get a different make and/or model if at all possible (a turned-in modem, a rental or lease trade-in, whatever)... I have a Motorola that they were giving out a couple years ago, with NO problems with it, and it is FAST. Too bad I can't take it with me when I move soon, though... But, regardless, when I sign back up for RoadRunner in my new home, I will either BUY a cable modem, or insist on a model other than the Ericsson... | |

@rr.com | When I got RoadRunner, they gave me a Motorola modem. I can't possibly see why they'd need to switch, these things are extremly fast and reliable. And from what I've heard, the Ericsson modems kinda suck. Oh well, I'm not switching either way.
