Here Comes Mobile WiMax 2.0 Four times the speed, backward compatible Wednesday Oct 07 2009 11:09 EDT Samsung and Russian WiMax operator Yota announced this week that they're testing the next incarnation of WiMax. The new equipment is based on the IEEE's 802.16m standard, announced this week, which is theoretically supposed to offer speeds four times faster than the current 802.16e standard. Given the new standard is backward compatible, Yota claims that Mobile WiMax carriers should be able to upgrade by "updating several circuit plate units and their basestation software." The WiMax Forum offers a little more detail: quote: The IEEE's IMT-Advanced proposal documents that ... using 4X2 MIMO in the urban microcell scenario with only a single 20 MHz TDD channel available system wide, the 802.16m system can support both 120 Mbit/s downlink and 60 Mbit/s uplink per site simultaneously. Higher data rates can be obtained with additional spectrum resources or more complex antenna schemes. The WiMAX Release 2 profile will also incorporate these capabilities for improved VoIP capacity, spectral efficiency, latency, handover speed, cell range, and coverage, with support for wider operating bandwidth in both TDD and FDD duplexing.
Yota doesn't expect to actually offer the service until next year, but they're offering service in both Russia and Nicaragua for $28 a month -- with no caps. The standard likely won't become official until after 2011, with carriers (both here and overseas) obviously not upgrading until at least then. Samsung is demonstrating the company's 802.16m solution this week during ITU Telecom World 2009 in Geneva. |

Re: wimax in the statesClear has $25/month for 768/384 or better with no caps. It's WiMAX too.

I don't know how many WiMax vendors I've gone through that don't have any actual product to sell, LOL. It's all about "will soon be this" and then they want to sell you some old technology that isn't really what you want from the WiMax.

Re: awsomesaid by dellsweig:What an awsome time to be involved with technology...... It really is. MIMO beamforming coupled with a cellular layout are the ingredients to infinitely reusable high-bandwidth spectrum. The days of having an exclusive license -- or even of needing one -- are quite numbered.

locationYeah, as long as your in an already over surviced area, this will just be ANOTHER option for you...

in Russia...WiMax has berzerker speed Got to consider what $28 is to them. Currency calculator shows me 833.1 Rubles. That doesn't tell me much about what the value actually means... Found this though: » www.worldsalaries.org/ru ··· ia.shtmlSay a person makes 10,000 Rubles/month... that means nearly a tenth of monthly income would go to internet. Very likely too expensive for the average person over there. Also found this: » www.kylekeeton.com/2007/ ··· ary.htmlOuch.

If a Russian WiMax company can roll out an uncapped service for $28/month it seems a US company should be capable of that as well. Given that this amount is such a high percentage of an average person's salary, it stands to reason that comparatively few people would sign up for such a service. That in turn would mean that WiMax can be successful and profitable even with a low subscriber count.

Re: in Russia...I'll go ahead and say that I think this will be more for business use. If that turns out to be the case, I would personally venture to guess that it'll turn some kind of profit eventually, though it's hard to know how much. Whatever the case for cost may be, either here or over there, the technology sure is neat

Russian in 2005 was just exiting one of the WORST collapses in Modern History. From the early 1990s (USSR imploding) until around 2001/2002 Russia and the old Soviet Bloc was in such a crippling "Depression", that as much as 20-25 percent of the people were unemployed. Similarly, the Russian Economy was Mafia run and black market. Russia has once again found it's footing and significantly grown due to oil since then. I would guess their salaries would be far higher now, even with the current economic crisis.

Go WiMAX!I think Sprint/Clear are going to be a winning team with this technology. It's got standardization and openness on it's side.

Soon come...This crap always seems to be just over the horizon, except it never materializes.
Well, not in my neighborhood.

big dealI can get 3G broadband now, I don't need the internet so bad that I want to pay for it while I travel. I don't even like to pay $10 to use it on vacation in my hotel room.. hey, get the point.. sell me a burger and give me wifi for free.
My rule of thumb 1st cable, 2nd really fast home internet (not on the fly, its too unpredictable) but ill take it for free.
Overboard with communications: if one company doesn't upgrade to 4G, just stays regular cellphone service and offers truly basement pricing for just a "hey" cellphone.. don't need all the extras, and strictly for cheap -- you got my business.
