story category Verizon Slows California FiOS Deployment
Wants to focus on marketing to existing service areas...

According to the OC Register's blog, Verizon is slowing their FiOS deployment in California. If you look at city website notices, they claim the build slowdown is due to the economy, but Verizon says they're just focusing on marketing to areas where the service is already available. Verizon spokesman Jon Davies tells the Register that Southern California is the only location where this slowdown is occurring "as far as he knows." 3,000 miles away in NYC, Verizon is busy deploying service to adhere to a new franchise agreement that requires they have the entire city wired by 2014.

Ditto here, but I seemed to have been skipped for uVerse as well and they'll never deploy it to my office as that would eat away from their overpriced T1 business.

This just sucks, AT&T has terrible support for their mediocre services.

Verizon can't justify installing an expensive FiOS system for a few scattered farmers in the LA area. Why don't you all just move, instead of complaining?

No Surprise

Verizon is slowing the deployment so they spend the least amount before Frontier takes over.

From my understandings they are trying to get rid of all the west coast sooner or later.

Problem is users not signing up - so build-out slows

»gadgetress.freedomblogging.com/2···l/13677/
Verizon confirmed today that it has slowed expansion of its much sought-after FiOS TV service in Southern California to focus on adding customers where service is already available.

“We’re still doing construction right now. But in the first four to five years, we were going at a very high rate to pass 1 million homes. In the first half of this year, we’ve slowed down the build,” he said.

He expects FiOS to get back on its scheduled rollout in the second half of this year. But he couldn’t say whether that move could once again be deferred if FiOS doesn’t sign up enough customers between now and then.
They are running Fios to a lot of areas and those areas aren't signing up at a high enough rate to justify the continued investment. So they will try to get the rate of signup higher in proportion to the number of houses passed. You can't keep building out new areas if you aren't covering the costs for the areas already built.

Its called RED-LINING....cable companies arent allowed to do it, neither should the phone companies....

Re: Problem is users not signing up - so build-out slows

The cable and phone companies now operate under a statewide franchise with CA. The local control was taken away a couple years ago when the Legislature changed the law to allow AT&T/Verizon to offer TV service. So there is now no requirement that a company (either cable or phone) offer service to all the residents and companies within their footprint anymore.

Anyone familiar with where Verizon has deployed here in California knows that VZ isn't redlining. Some of the poorest service areas were the first to get FiOS (eg Beaumont, Lake Elsinore etc).

I would guess the collapse of the economy factors into people not signing up for FIOS in California as Verizon had hoped.

Great service. MAybe it should be CHEAPER if they want to sign up more people? Maybe they really need to advertise and inform customers of the benefits?

California economy is hurting + many foreclosures

I don't think VZ will be in a rush to deploy into areas that are being foreclosed.

FEMA money is being used to repair a horse trail ...

"Due to the storms that occurred in December 2004 and January 2005 portions of the City's hiking/equestrian trails were damaged. The City of Walnut had been approved to receive approximately $147,000 from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in reimbursement for repairs to these public improvements. The City of Walnut appropriated $127,000 for the repair of the hiking/equestrian trails damaged during these storms."

Southern California is doing very well FiOS-wise

We've seen very widespread FiOS deployment, even to more remote communities. I'm not surprised at all that the area served my the Register newspaper is seeing slowing deployment...there is little Verizon service area left that doesn't already have FiOS.

But I'm not surprised that they are focusing on marketing. Particularly with HSI, Verizon has already taken a number substantial price increases (at least here in Huntington Beach) while major competitors Comcast and Time Warner hiked speeds, expanded HDTV and pushed aggressive triple play deals.

Re: Southern California is doing very well FiOS-wise

For whatever it's worth, Verizon's Fios deployment in its service territory within the city of Los Angeles, such as Brentwood, Westwood, Pacific Palisades, the north San Fernando Valley (San Fernando, Mission Hills, Granada Hills, Sylmar, etc.) has all been but non-existent. So much for the statewide franchise agreement.

I'm still shocked that even in high-end Pacific Palisades, much of the west end of community only has access to DSL speeds of up to 1.5 mb down, and no Fastpath.

Yes, Time-Warner and Charter (Charter serves a very small portion of Los Angeles adjacent to Pacific Palisades that's part of their Malibu system) at least both offer higher speed options to Palisades residents.

I know this as one of my relatives lives in the Palisades and I experience her slow DSL speeds when I deadhead there for my trips.

True, we have an economic downturn, yet in the Pacific Palisades, the downturn is not as severe as in the Inland Empire. Even Orange County is holding up reasonably well.

California is mostly PacBell or AT&T now, but the areas served by Verizon had their chance to get FiOS. If you wanted it and had enough subscribers, you could have gotten on the Verizon list. We here in SCPD, Ca. asked and got FiOS, but I don't even think we have 50% FiOS subscribers. I think here it is two fold, most people want fast low cost Internet, so the bottom tier of FiOS is all they get. Which is the same as the Cable Companies. The other reason is no TV yet, so Verizon is missing a big piece. So Verizon has to work on their TV offering.

Re: Southern California is doing very well FiOS-wise

They offered low cost internet. When we first got it here in Huntington Beach, 5/2 was $30/mo. They've taken huge increases since then both in HSI and video. For example, the lowest HSI rate has gone up 50% since deployment, from $30/mo to $45/mo. That's crazy, especially for budget minded people who are quite happy with $18/mo DSL that is price locked for 2 years.

I have a client with a T1 in 90272 - corner of Sunset and PCH. I've run the tests and for some reason even though they come out within spec the performance seems miserable.

I would love FIOS but it isn't available - wish I could find their deployment schedule.

Anyone here using fixed wireless or something of the like? Bonded T1 is too expensive.

I could use fast upload and download speeds. Cable doesn't offer the upload speeds we require.

Thanks

customers

I bet they are waiting for the charter mess to blow over and see how many more customers they get from it. A big chunk around me is charter/fios. And a big chuck of people have fios internet but not tv as tv was not offered in the beginning.

I dont even think Verizon's footprint is that big in California. Only market they have is what they took over from the GTE merger years ago. Which was a lot of small chunks here and there.

Correction Should Be Noted

So this piece cites the Orange County Register blog regarding the stoppage of FiOS in Orange County, but then goes on to cite a notice on the City of Walnut's home page, which is in Los Angeles County. One has zip to do with the other as L.A. and Orange are two vastly different counties that are run significantly different from each other.

Secondly, the City of Brea is in N. Orange County and is closer to L.A. The piece on the Register's blog about FiOS in Brea may as well be talking about the service in Rochester, NY. LMAO.

Re: Correction Should Be Noted

For whatever it's worth, Verizon/GTE serves a very, very small portion of the city of Brea.

The boundaries are basically north and west of the intersection of Central and Puente to the La Habra city limits.

That neighborhood is assigned to the Verizon central office in La Habra on N. Idaho St., with La Habra prefixes and an area code of 562.

The rest of Brea is served by Pacific Bell Telephone Company, dba AT&T California from their central office on Orange Ave., near Imperial Hwy. and Brea Blvd.

For now, no Fios in the Verizon served section of Brea, and limited U-Verse availabilty from AT&T in the Olinda Ranch development on the east side of Brea.

Hoping FIOS continues to expand

I've wanted to get FIOS since it came out in late 2004 I believe. Even now, FIOS is so close yet so far from my grasp. It's available in my city, but only in newer developments and that's all! This means much of the city still has to suffer with old DSL, and that's unfortunate, because I know many would jump at the chance to get FIOS, including myself, if only Verizon would make it available city wide! I hope they'll expand soon, so I can get FIOS internet and dump TWC cable who don't seem to be interested in upgrading speeds to their users. The demand for FIOS is there, if only they'd roll out the service more!

based upon reality

california is a step closer to bankruptcy.. until things look somewhat better.. i'd spend billions elsewhere too. the northeast is becoming more competitive and we know that the kind of offering comcast has with a 250gb soft limit, verizon can breathe easy...

i wonder if one day we'll look back at these days and find out that there was collussion between telco and the cable industry for reselling video content (buy on the cheap and resell $$ high $$) in exchange for not tearing the cable providers a new one in broadband delployments.

So if Southern California is slowing down...

... what about the Bay Area? No Verizon phone service here! I guess Fios is nothing but a dream.

I live about a 1 minute walk from one of Cisco's buildings, yet no fiber service. Oooh, the irony.

Time Warner

I'd love to get FIOS if/when it comes out, but I'm in an AT&T area and just started getting flyers for U-Verse TV. I think Time Warner has something to do with why people aren't signing up with Fios, same speed, same price, for the internet part anyways. Just don't offer the higher end packages like Fios that very few would need or pay extra for, especially in this economy. I"m in La Palma, CA by the way.

@verizon.net

fios is fantastic... sad to have to move away from it

Just a note from a person in Seattle who's had FIOS 15mbps down *AND UP* for over a year. It is fantastic and worth the $130 a month (I buy the business class to my home).

Previously had Comcast Biz Cable but the speeds still don't go as high on the upstream for that price point.

We have to move to Burbank, which is how I found this thread. I am sooooooo sad that you don't have FIOS, it's going to be like doing dialup again.

I tell you, FIOS is worth every single solitary penny and for me and my servers it's been strong 365/24/7 with never ever a need of any customer service calls.

Just wanted to let you know that it is all they say it is... and fully worth kissing up to Verizon to get it in your area.
