It is retained for the value of any residual information contained in it. sockssocks is a protocol for providing some or all the network connectivity options of one machine (the socks server), to any other machines that can reach it, without those other machines (socks client) having that network connectivity themselves.
It is therefore possibly to setup a single host (for example, the one connected to the DSL modem and therefore to the net) as a socks server, then laptops or other PCs connected to the network that this host is on, can also use the internet via that host. The socks server typically needs two network cards, one with the DSL modem plugged in, and the other for the private network hub and other devices. See also NAT.
