ICMPStands for Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP), originally designed to allow routers to send error or control messages to other routers or hosts; ICMP provides communication between the Internet Protocol (IP) software on one machine and another, whether router or computer or other device.
ICMP packets are usually small and relatively simple, returning such information as "the destination the packet was intended for is not available", or the famous "ping" response, among others.
