DSL - Section 7The speed and efficiency of the current DSL technologies and equipment means that geographical distance from an ISP is no longer such a big issue. With dial-up, apart from costs associated with dialing out of area, there would also be line quality issues as well. The way this has changed the equation now is that in the DSL world it is now possible to run a pure sales oriented national ISP.. the ISP can simply be the interface to the customers and one or several DSL infrastructure national or super-regional companies, and out-source the few ISP type services people expect (mail server, usenet news server, DNS server etc). Your email server may be in a specialized computer room, even in another state, out-sourced by your DSL provider, and it wouldnt make much difference to you.
