DSL - Section 5Recently, competitive local exchange carriers (CLECs) have been given the right to install their own network infrastructure right up to the local phone exchanges owned by the bell operating companies. These CLECs have seized on DSL as a transmission standard for the last mile, so they may compete with both the Bells and the Cable companies to cash in on the ever growing appetite for data.
Rather than selling DSL direct to the consumers and businesses, the CLECs have mostly left the promotion and sales support side up to ISPs both national and local, which frees them up to work more on the technical hurdles of this new technology.
