We are using the google mapping API. You will need a recent browser, and a decently fast PC. You do not have to accept any cookies to use these maps but security add-ons can interfere with their correct operation. If you are an MSIE user, you may wish to look over this page: help for MSIE users from google.
By the way, the term 'Mash-up' refers to the combination of local data, and third party web-based free services (such as the google mapping API).
