Starting a WiMax ISP

Okay, let me first start out of situation.

Our town is currently controlled by one DSL and one Cable internet provider, what I would like to do is extend the competition to wireless internet.

I've been doing homework on it for awhile now, and because I'm not finding that many resources on WiMax or any other type of long-range wireless networking system, I'm coming here to ask the experts.

* What budget range should I be looking at for a decent startup?
* Is there any permits or licenses to get before operating WiMax?
* What equipment do you recommended for the base-point and consumer equipment?

Also, I understand you must have an antenna at the customer location, but how would you connect it to the home network?

Sorry if I'm asking alot, I'm just wanting to get my information straight, I'm just looking to gather details at this point!

Thanks;
Austin.

(Sorry if I posted in the wrong forum, as this looked like the best area)

[Equipment] Base station antenna choice and polarisation options

Hi.

I am looking at setting up a small WISP locally. Luckily the house is at the highest point of the area (mostly flattish).

I would like to send out service all around - but rather than have one antenna which would not be able to handle (hopefully) all the local users, I am thinking of fitting a cluster of compact patch antennas like this :-

http://www.solwise.co.uk/wireless-outdoorantenna-24-panel-12pn.htm

The idea was to place a cluster of them, all facing out, in a circle. 6 or 8 of them in total. The finished unit to be given a polycarb "dome lid" to make it blend in to the roofline - and then placed about 6" / 15cm up from the apex of the roof. My other though in having multiple low power units it to avoid the temptation to use a single antenna with a power amp - which seem pointless anyway unless the remote connection is also powerful.

I have two questions really which I would value peoples thoughts on (unless my idea is REALLY bad in which case, please feel free to advise otherwise entirely - but please bear in mind I have to keep visual appearance as "residential and pleasant" as possible - no towers alas).

Firstly, as these are all directional (65º), should I be looking at running all of these on 1 channel with the same SSID so people can both roam AND folks getting two signals (overlap) will be able to automatically pick the stronger signal.

Secondly, the antenna in question can be used in vertical or horizontal mode. I was toying with the idea of alternating them - especially if all on one channel - so that laptops would benefit from the horizontal signals but upright antenna (back of desktop PC etc) would presumably prefer a vertical polarization. As the pattern however is 65H and 35V, I am guessing the sector covered in H mode will be only around half that as when it is in V mode.

So in summary please:-

Should I try and transmit on the same channel on all direction antenna - or should I use two sets of 1, 5, 8 and 11 (8 antenna)?

Secondly, for roughly flat terrain and two storey houses, is it best to have Horizontal only, Vertical only - or does the idea of having both (on the same channel) sound like the best way forward?

Very many thanks for your time and your thoughts.

Kind Regards
Mark

Implementing DSL?

Have any of you considered installing DSLAMs at POP -or- tower locations?

I am in a location that is strictly last mile but the challenge has been foliage. I believe dry copper lines can be had from the LEC for around $14 per month and this is a market where I could easily charge $99 per month per residential account.

It is just a random thought but I'm sure I'm not the first to have given thought to it...

Dual Pol antenna Questions

Two Questions.

First, We are looking at using Radiowaves High Performance Dual Pol Dishes for our backhauls. We are currently using single Pol Radios, but plan on going orthogon over time. We will likely replace the existing antennas with these but only use a single pol for the time being (Better antenna get us better links until we get better radios.) Is there any risk with only using one of the pols? Do we need to cap the other Pol for anything other than weather? ie will the opposing element pick up the other polarity and leak it out from the connector causing some freaked out multipath? Is there susch a thing as wear and tear? ie will we wear out the vertical pol by using it and have mismatched power when we switch over to ortogon?

Second.

What happens if a guy takes an antenna splitter and uses both pols on a single pol radio? is there an rf multiplexer for this purpose? will it effectively double the power output or just cause alot of noise? This is not something we are looking into doing, its just something Im curious about. As I see it, the RF should go out on both polarizations and be picked up on the other side of the link by the corresponding polar element, be combined back at double the power assuming the signal travels at the same rate and doesnt create a multipath issue. How far off base on this am I? (Im pretty confident Im wrong on this)

Learning Concepts?

Ok let me start off by saying that I understand enough about networking to just get myself into trouble. The problem is that the only way to truly know something is through doing it. So what I would like to do is learn how a wisp works from the hardware (mainly this part) to the software. I am not asking for you all to say HEY SEARCH as I have and not found a ground up article. I am looking to find somewhere to start my knowledge. Understanding what some of the terms you use. What equipment I would need. And what would be good lab equipment (so I can test out setups).

I wouldn't be running a T-1 into the lab just using a cable modem for testing purpose. I have places I can test connectivity with so that won't be a problem. I just need to know what would be good equipment to cover say a 3 mile shot with a lab budget in mind.

[Equipment] I need suggestion please

Hello all,

I have searched for many wireless equipment websites, I couldn't find any good equipments to reach my requirements for my whole city about 20km from central. The thing is in my city there is no tall building that taller than my building. I choose the product from Netkrom.com and the product are:

PRO-NAME AMOUNT PRICE TOTAL
ISPAIR-500 Series	1 $1199.20 $1199.20
W24-17SP90 4 $200.80 $803.20
ISP-CPE500G 10 $159.20 $1592
ISP-CPE500GUHP 10 $239.20 $2392
CAT 5 UTP 2 $209.60 $419.20
RG8U/LMR-400 4 $23.20 $92.80
WAC-LA3G 4 $23.20 $92.80
=====================================================
                                            $6591.20

For ISPAIR-500 It can cover over 32km or 20miles with W24-17SP90 90 degree of Antenna. The rest are CPE(s), Cable and Surge Protection.

The question that I want to ask are:

1. Can you all give any suggestions on the quality of these equipments from netkrom?
2. Is this price too expensive or not according to my requirement?
3. Can you suggest any other equipments that you knew it as good quality that meet my requirements above and cheaper than netkrom equipments? (Please suggest only the product that can use without Frequency license such as Wi-Fi)

Please help me work it out!!!

Thanks
Somvannda
