[Troubles] High latency and horrible streaming video

I'm visiting my parents in Northwestern Pennsylvania, and they have Windstream DSL, the 3 Mbps plan. They told me that a week or so ago they started noticing problems with their DSL service. The most obvious symptom was that streaming video became unreliable. YouTube and Netflix streaming performance, which had been fine in the past, became terrible. Tonight, we tried watching a movie from Amazon, and even at the lowest quality level, the video player (a Roku player) kept running out of data and had to rebuffer every few minutes -- the movie was unwatchable.

When surfing sites, I've noticed that images load surprisingly slowly (more slowly than at my office, which has only a 1.5 Mbps link). So it does seem that something is going wrong.

Now, here's an interesting wrinkle: at SpeedTest.net, the down channel tests out at 3 Mpbs, which is about the full rate. (The up channel is only 0.24 Mbps, however.) That speed ought to be more than enough for what my parents are doing, but still they have problems. It's a mystery.

Fortunately, I know how to resolve such mysteries: ask the smarties on dslreports!

Has anybody else experienced similar problems? Is Windstream doing any kind of filtering on YouTube, Neftlix, or Amazon streaming? Any other ideas?

Thanks for your help!

Cheers,
Tom

What happens when Windstream takes over an ISP?

It was announced today that Windstream is taking over Iowa Telecom (a mostly very rural Iowa ISP), of which I am a subscriber.

Has anyone here been in a similar situation? What what your experience? How many months before you noticed any changes at all? What changes did you notice? Do they standardize everything or keep existing differences?

[Troubles] Connectivity Issues

I am in Sanford, NC and I constantly lose my connection from 5PM to 9PM. The dsl light my modem just goes out. This has been going on for months. At least 10 calls and 5 visits and I still have problems. I am paying for the 6mb services and do not get anywhere close to that on speed tests.

Each scheduled visit I request the tech come late in the afternoon when my service is bad. Every single time so far I have come home at lunch and had a note on my door saying everything checked out fine. I want them to call before they come and I never get a call to meet them.

Anyone have any suggestions for my end? Right now dsl is my only option and I am talking with charter to run a cable line to my house.

Thanks

High-ish latency

Hi, I've had WS for quite a while but it doesn't seem as fast and good as it was a while back. On Speedtest/pingtest I get

1.30mbps is quite a bit low if you ask me, which is why I'm thinking there might be a problem. Also during the packet loss test it comes up as it can't do it. The latency is a bit high as well. I've noticed it being quite high in games. The latency also has a tendancy to spike and jitter a lot, although pingtest doesn't show it as much, it does jump around a lot, especially on games. Anyways, just checking to see if there's a problem.

Whole-house filter

Hello, what is the proper procedure to obtain a whole-house NID filter? Currently I am running a dedicated feed to a 66 punchblock and splitting off voice and data into a RJ-11 style DSL filter. Ideally I'd like to filter this at the NID assuming it's moisture sealed/high quality. I plan on using di-electric grease as well.

Thanks in advance.

Ping Problem Back Again

My ping is inexplicably jumping around from a normal of 40 to 60 ms (to Google) to an amazing 400 to 800 ms. Every ping is different, and it's jumping all over the place.

This is about my sixth time calling Windstream on this issue, and will be the third technician they've sent out to "diagnose" it. I'm sure he'll just replace another stretch of phone cable and say it's "all better."

I'm absolutely sick and tired of this company's service. Calling them today, I was disconnected FIVE TIMES before their internal IVR system actually got me through to someone. Disconnected FIVE TIMES.

This company can't even run their own internal phone network with any semblance of success. I'm not sure why anyone should trust them to run an actual, external one either.

I'm sick and tired of this issue. I know it's not the router, not the internal network, and it's not any of the wiring leading into the house. They've all been replaced already.

I give up, really. I'm ready to go back to cable and pay twice as much for service that's slower, rather than deal with these people.

[Troubles] Windstream high latency and low SNR

Can anyone tell me if the network issues that have been reported are resolved. I live in Monroe GA and every night for the last week from around 7pm till 11pm I have extremely high latency and my SNR will drop below 5. This typically will never go above 8 which from what I have been told is still too low for a good solid connection.

These ongoing issue with Windstream have existed since I have started with them but I have no other choice but to use their service as nothing else is available in my area.

Thanks in advance for any feedback.
