Tips, tricks, to get lower price when contract expires?

Anyone have any tips or tricks to getting a lower price when calling AT&T when the yearly contract price expires? Is there a special number to call for their retention department (fi they have one)?

Current plan, "HSIA $ off 12 months Promo Shell 6.2", expires at the end of the month, currently paying $20 for this plan.

New Set Top Box firmware rollout

I was told that a new firmware for the Uverse STBs is supposed to start rolling out any day. Over 150 fixes and enhancements are on the list. Does anyone know when this will hit the DFW market? Can you force the upgrade or do you have to wait for the box to prompt you or will it just happen silently overnight?

There are a couple fixes I'm anticipating, especially the fix to shut off the blue HD light when the box is off and fixing the menu aspect ratio in certain instances for 4:3 screens.

U-Verse DVR hard drive upgrade while keeping the recordings

I have been racking my brain and the U-Verse box on how to upgrade the hard drive and still maintain all my recordings.

***Please remember you are doing this on your own and you are voiding the warranty and whatever else AT&T decides to do. I still don't know why they just don't install a bigger hard drive and save everyone the headache, or even give you the option to pay a little more and get it that way. Oh well

Upgrading the hard drive is as simple as removing the old hard drive and placing a new hard drive, the letting the system do its thing. You can see how that is done using this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p-WvBTiqkJM.

After hours and hours of research and web searches I finally found this http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/showthread.php?t=984998 that show you how to upgrade the hard drive to a larger one, and still maintain the recordings. The explanation was good, but it didn't have all the details necessary to actually perform the upgrade, so I kept trying back and forth till I finally got it. I have to admit I would have never figured it out on my own. Now here we are with a solution, finally. I hope this helps others instead of them wasting their time.

I have only done this with the U-Verse VIP1225 that has a 250GB and upgraded it to a 1.5TB. Based on the posts and the amount of space I ended up with, 1TB is the max the system will recognize, but I already had the drive and it was 1.5TB and it was the green drive, still worked perfectly. The box I had had a SATA drive, I heard that older ones use ATA, so check before continuing, the procedure should still work, but I can't guarantee it. So I will do my best to outline the procedure:

1. Power off the unit and unplug it
2. Remove the hard drive as shown in the 1st link
3. Install a new hard drive, plug the power and let it boot. This took a long time, maybe 2 hours. Once it is done and the system is back up, you will see that the recordings show nothing and the space available is huge.
4. Do steps 1 & 2 again
5. Hook up the 2 hard drives to your computer and see what you have. You will notice that each drive has 2 partitions. The 2nd partition of each drive has the files you need.

****DON’T MIX UP THE DRIVES WHILE YOU ARE LOOKING ON THE COMPUTER OR MODIFYING/COPYING THE FILES. YOU WILL LOSE YOUR RECORDINGS.

6. On the new drive in the 2nd partition, you want to get how many files are in the directory dvrvol. Write this number down you will use it later.
7. Wipe out the new drive and all the partitions; I used Disk Management for this. In Windows Start-->Run-->type diskmgmt.msc and that will bring up Disk Management. I deleted all the volumes in the new drive. Please be careful when using this, you could accidentally remove your OS, any important files, or the original drive from the U-Verse box.
8. Once that is done, use EaseUS Todo Backup Free to clone the drive:
    A. Select Clone --> Disk clone
    B. Select for Clone Source, the original U-Verse hard drive
    C. Select for Target Location, the new hard drive
    D. Check the box for “Sector by Sector Clone”
    E. Select “Next”
    F. Do not modify anything else. I know it shows that there is unallocated space, don’t worry about it, the U-Verse box will take care of that.
    G. This will take about 2 hours
9. Copy the file dvr.mrt from the original U-Verse hard drive to your computer’s hard drive
10. The original U-Verse 250 GB hard drive had had in the dvrvol directory 193 slc files. My new hard drive showed 999 slc files when I viewed it in step 6.
11. Now we need to get the number of files in HEX format. You can use any online converter for this; I used this http://www.rapidtables.com/convert/number/decimal-to-hex.htm. Based on the files I found the following:
   A. For 193 slc files -->C1
   B. For 999 slc files --> 3E7  *This is from step 6
12. Now we have to convert these numbers to get the value we need.
   A. 1st we need to change the value to 4 digits by adding zero(s) to the front so
      1. For C1 --> 00C1
      2. For 3E7 --> 03E7
   B. Next we need to move the last number to the front of then number:
      1. For 00C1 -->  10 0C
      2. For 03E7 -->  70 3E
13. New you need a HEX file editor. I used HxD which you can find at this http://mh-nexus.de/en/hxd/. Once installed open the file dvr.mrt that you copied to your own hard drive in step 9. Don’t mess around with the original. We need to modify decimal position 172 & 173 in the file
14. After the file opens go to Search --> GoTo
15. In the popup window check the dec box and type 172. At that position, you will find that the values for 172 and 173 are 10 0C. You will need to update them to the new values. In my case the new values were 70 3E. Save the file.
16. Now override the existing file in the new hard drive with the file we modified in step 15.
17. Install the hard drive and power up the system. In my case this took about ½ hour will it made all the necessary changes.

After completing this process you will find that the new hard drive has all your recordings and now show a lot of free space depending on the size of the new drive you installed. Let me know if you have any questions. I hope this helps everyone out there.

UVERSE is DSL.. rebranded.. AT&T CSRs are dumb!!!.

Over the past few months, AT&T has been sending me various promotional crap about my location being serviced by AT&T UVERSE.

Marketing 768Kbps as the maximum download speed for my address is NOT UVERSE. It's piss poor DSL that's being delivered by copper that ties back to the Central Office that's 4 miles from me in my house on a county road in East Texas.

Your sales reps are dumber than rocks too when I have to explain that UVERSE is just ADSL2 and NOT FTTH (Fiber To The Home), like Verizon's FIOS.

If AT&T would setup FTTN (Fiber To The Node) at the start of every county road that's tied to a state road, and run DSLAMs off the nodes, they could reach most of the rural people with ADSL2 or UVERSE as they like to call it. I remember having it at another address in the same zipcode. It still runs over the existing copper. But instead of using the Central Office as the Access Point, it uses he fiber fed node as the AP.

For now I'll just have to stick with Verizon's HomeFusion because AT&T is either unwilling to upgrade their network for better wireline service in the rural areas or they actually think they will be able to service all their rural customers with LTE like Verizon in about 20 years at the rate they are going..

Where's all the BILLIONS of dollars each month going AT&T?? Let me guess.. Probably helping secretly to fund the huge multiple hundred billion dollar NSA data center in Utah right??

Recent low volume problem only on TV channel 230 C-SPAN 1

I live in northeast Illinois have had U-verse TV, internet, and VOIP telephone service for almost a year now. Within the past few weeks, the audio volume level on channel 230, C-SPAN 1, has become much lower than all the other channels.

The volume disparity exists regardless of whether HDMI or composite cables are used between the DVR and television.

Is there a way AT&T can adjust their feed for this channel so the volume is once again consistent with other channels?

Thanks.

Second level support

So I have had many issues with my service. I finally reached the retention department about canceling service with early termination fees since my service sucks and had many techs out that couldn't fix the problem. I was referred to Second level support (855-388-7848). The crazy thing is you have to have a special pin number to talk to them (9649- good until the 27th). And to top it off the pin changes weekly so you can only talk to them when they want you to....has anyone else experienced this??? This dept. actually send out a manager from dispatch to come take a look at my service. They also actually call me back all the time to check about service quality! This is the support everyone should have access too.

Variable download rates on UVERSE

I purchase 18mb down from AT&T but rarely see that. I get lots of reasons why. Initially I had issues with a bad copper line from the AT&T box to the house (about 1/2 mile). I am concerned I still have line issues. My download rate ranges form 1.5mps to 15. I've attached UVRealtime screenshots. It's been running over 24h.

Can anyone help me with interpretation of the UV Realtime info and tell me if I have a problem inside or outside the house? (I never had these issues with TWC).

Thanks for your help!

How do you terminate an AT&T contract without fees?

I'm looking at signing up for U-verse and see that "an early termination fee of $180 may apply." I've heard bad stories about some of the wireless carriers making it difficult to terminate your contract at the proper time without getting hit with fees.

Does anyone know how AT&T handles terminations? When I sign up, should I be sure to ask what my "termination window" would be one year hence, to ensure I could end my contract at that time without charges?

Also, I must say, it's hard to find out what your "Standard Rates" will be after your first year introductory offer. The best I could find was here --
http://www.att.com/shop/internet.html

But even then every price has an asterisk with it saying "A high-speed Internet equipment fee may apply".

My goodness, is it really that difficult to tell customers what they will pay for a product?

Many different U-verse cable problems.

I am writing this post because of cable problems that I have that no one can resolve. I have had AT&T U-verse since 3/5/09. When we got U-verse there were some problems at first, then everything seemed to go smoothly for a couple of years. Recently a lot of different things started to happen. I recently had 15 service calls to my house; every tech that comes tells me something different is wrong.

I have had a many different problems; a lot of pixelation, live TV will pixelate then freeze, the TV will go black then say a message lost signal, the TV will seem to have interference with static lines across the screen. The dvr will not record properly, sometimes part of the show is missing, pixilation, the picture freezing, the sound missing, and peoples voices do not match there lips when they are talking. Often you cannot pause, rewind, or fast forward on the dvr. When I went on my computer that’s hard wired to the modem the one TV that is hard wired from the modem went black and said lost signal, this happened multiple times. One time a line tech was here he disconnected the cable from the house outside and I still was watching TV on my 62 inch big screen, which at the time had a wireless cable box. It must have been picking up a signal from a neighbors house. I called him in to see the cable was still working. He couldn’t believe it and called a tech to check it out.

The techs that came out have replaced modems; dvr’s, cable boxes, added a net gear Ethernet splitter, they said my coax cables were bad then took out 2 cable boxes and added 2 wireless boxes. At that time I was picking up a neighbors signal then they removed the wireless cable boxes and installed cat 5 cable to the 2 boxes. The last tech that came out said what do you want me to do? Did not have a clue as to what was going on with our history of past repairs or what was replaced. My wife said he needs to finish the cat 5 wiring the last tech didn’t complete. He said he will have to charge us. We were not charged by the last tech because of all the problems we were having. He then said there were no problems with the cable cat 5 wiring. My wife showed him a dvr recording with pixilation, freezing, and no sound. He said that shouldn’t do that. My wife called me at work and I explained over the phone as to what was going on with the cable. He said again that shouldn’t do that, he doesn’t see a problem with anything. He then got into his truck and left, did not replace or do anything.

As of today all the dvr problems still exist. The dvr will not record properly, sometimes part of the show is missing, pixilation, the picture freezing, the sound missing, and peoples voices do not match there lips when they are talking. Then once when in the recordings menu the dvr beeped and the font size changed to a larger size on its own. You could not read it because it was off the screen. Live TV will pixelate then freeze. I pay a lot of money for this service $215.00 a month. All I want is an answer; can someone repair the cable in my house? I need to know, if not I will go with another company. You should not have to deal with these kinds of problems with your cable TV, phone, and internet service.

How to setup xbox live for Uverse NVG510

I haven't seen very much helpful info for this problem on the internet, so I am going to put this step by step info up here to help people so they don't have to struggle with tech support for 3 hour to no avail like I did.

Step 1:

You have to access your modem. Start up a web browser (any one will do). Next go to the address bar and type 192.168.1.254 and hit enter. This will take you to the main interface for your box where you may access a number of settings for your modem. You will also be prompted to provide an access code which will be located on the box itself and labeled "access code"

Step 2:

Now, in order to allow for the changing of your NAT type from strict or moderate to open, you have to click on "Firewall." From here you have to click on the NAT/Gaming option which will take you to a page which gives you 3 registers: Hosted Applications, Application Hosting Entry, and Manage Custom Services.

Step 3:

Under Manage Custom Services, you have to click the Custom Services option. Here, there will be an empty Service Entry page with the options: Service Name, Port Range, Base Host Port, and Protocol.
Now, in order for your NAT type to change from moderate or strict to open for xbox live, which will allow you to connect to parties and games reliably, you have to create 4 individual custom services, and add them to the list.

Step 4:

You have to create 4 services, and I will layout the creation process below:

For the First one:

Service Name: Port 88 UDP
Global Port Range: 88-88
Base Host Port: 88
Protocol: UDP

Then click add,

For the next one:

Service Name: Port 3074 UDP and TCP
Global Port Range: 3074-3074
Base Host Port: 3074
Protocol: Both

Then click add,

For the next one:

Service Name: Port 53 UDP and TCP
Global Port Range: 53-53
Base Host Port: 53
Protocol: Both

Then click add,

For the last one:

Service Name: Port 80 TCP
Global Port Range: 80-80
Base Host Port: 80
Protocol: TCP

Then click add.

Now that you have all 4 custom services created they are in a list in front of you. Go down and click the return to NAT/Gaming button. This will bring you back to the page with the three registers.

Step 5:

This step requires you to be connected to xbox live through the modem on your xbox 360 system. On the modem module, under the register titled Application Hosting Entry, you have to open the drop down menu titled "Needed by Device." Under this there should be Several IP addresses or names. You have to check what the IP address of your 360 system is and then make sure that for each entry you select this address for adding the service. Select the xbox system ip and then move up to the drop down menu labelled "Service." This will bring up a huge list of stuff that you will not care about. You need to scroll down until you find the four services you created, which will have a star next to their name. Ensuring you have the xbox system IP selected, select each of the custom services and then add them to the list.

Now that all 4 of these services are added to the list, your xbox will recognize the ports as open and the NAT type as open. This will allow full connectivity to all aspects of xbox live with no trouble caused by a moderate or strict NAT type.

I hope this will help many people who are confused as to how to allow xbox full open NAT and the full xbox live experience while connected to the ATT Motorola NVG510 Uverse box.

AT&T Uverse is killing me

So I moved to Farmers Branch, TX. I previously had Verizon FIOS and boy let me tell you, I miss the crap out of it already and it's only been 1 day. AT&T U-Verse has monthly data caps and is horridly slow.

Right now, for some dumb and unexplained reason, AT&T won't let me have the 24Mbps plan. I can only get the 18Mbps one. The tech that came to install my service said there is no technical reason why I shouldn't be able to get 24Mbps, since I'm right next to the "node". Any attempt to ask why I can't get the 24Mbps service from sales reps fails every time.

The 1.5Mbps upstream I think bottlenecks everything. Remote Desktop sessions feel horrible and websites take longer to load up. Just feels slower all around. I also notice that when I go to my router's firmware webpage, on the home tab it shows my "Broadband" as 25Mbps down 2Mbps up. That doesn't reflect the real speeds I'm seeing on speedtest.net at 18/1.5.

Anyone have any explanation for this strange runaround I'm getting? Any idea how I can get the 24Mbps service? I don't think contacting AT&T through frontline support is going to work at this point.

Thanks in advance.

50% off Uverse

Charter is offering a triple play bundle 1 year 3 x 29.99. That got me looking at my 135.00 U200 and 1.5 Meg express service.

I called and asked for a better price they offered $105.00 for one year I said no thank you and said I needed to consider my options.

2 or 3 days later the ATT robot calls with a customer survey. I take the survey give the representative good marks and leave a voice comment that my representative did not have the authority to match the Comcast deal. The next question was can ATT contact me about my account. I answer yes.

The next day an ATT manager calls. We talk about the Charter ads and she offers a 1 year 50% off deal at 69.00 and I accept.

Let’s see how my next bill looks.

is this guy really serious?..small rant

quote:"I have been responsible for AT&T's network since April of '08 and I have yet to have a customer complaint that our U-verse network did not give them the speed they needed," Smith said.

In combination with its FTTP plans, AT&T will enhance its existing hybrid copper/fiber FTTN network.

While VDSL2 with vectoring is all the rage, AT&T today can deliver over 50 Mbps on a single pair of copper at 2,200 feet and 100 Mbps with bonding.

In addition to bonding and vectoring, Smith said that they are working with some of their suppliers on point solutions to deliver higher speeds on longer loops, including what he calls a VDSL Service Expansion Module (VSEM).

"You go from the VRAD that serves your customers today at the fiber to the node location, do a fiber extension, put this thing and shorten the loops," Smith said.

Smith added that there could be a situation where they are able to deliver up to 100 Mbps to almost every residence in a subdivision, "but we have got three streets that go beyond that point it's fairly easy to put in a small extension of fiber hosted off that existing node and shorten those loops and get those customers as well."

Let's break this down....

quote:"I have been responsible for AT&T's network since April of '08 and I have yet to have a customer complaint that our U-verse network did not give them the speed they needed," Smith said.

Don't they have techs on this site? or someone that browses the internet for customer feedback, or have they ever answered a phone call without routing it to an overseas customer service agent?
quote:While VDSL2 with vectoring is all the rage, AT&T today can deliver over 50 Mbps on a single pair of copper at 2,200 feet and 100 Mbps with bonding.

Really? Where are these speed packages...I must have been missing something the past 3 years I been in the Charlotte area.
quote:"You go from the VRAD that serves your customers today at the fiber to the node location, do a fiber extension, put this thing and shorten the loops," Smith said.

Really this is your plan? To extend fiber links to more VRAD type devices? Why not run it the extra freaking 500ft to peoples homes at this point...
quote:Smith added that there could be a situation where they are able to deliver up to 100 Mbps to almost every residence in a subdivision, "but we have got three streets that go beyond that point it's fairly easy to put in a small extension of fiber hosted off that existing node and shorten those loops and get those customers as well."

You can't even get all your customers 3HD streams, on a 32m profile and your talking about delivering 100mbit speeds? If its so easy then why are tons of people just out of reach of U-verse by a few hundred feet, like my moms housing development, where is their small extension to light up another 100+ houses?

Hopefully intermittent problem solved

*Fingers crossed* I had a tech visit on Thursday after I took another random outage on my VDSL connection 2 months after the previous one. I am only 800 cable feet from the VRAD just around the corner on the end of our street, so I should have a pretty rock solid connection. This tech I could almost immediately tell was light years better than the previous 2 who had visited.

I gave him the run down of the pattern of problems. So, I show him my wiring closet and he immediately looks at how the initial installer terminated my home run from the NID and he says "That's not right. I'm going to fix that." I showed him the stats on the gateway and explained the behavior I had experienced and he says "Something's not right with that gateway. I'm going to replace that." Then he goes outside to look at the wiring in the NID. Next thing I know, he is remounting the NID lower on the wall and replacing the jumper pairs inside the NID. He pulls out the original jumper which is about 5-6 inches in length and shows me. Both wires had been pinched and accidentally stripped bare. He said the original installer put the box too high for the cable length so there wasn't enough slack and he must have nicked the jumper pairs and not realized it.

So, within the course of about 15 minutes, he had fixed the NID and jumper wiring, re-terminated the home run with an RJ14 insert removing quite a bit of excess exposed wiring, and replaced my 2Wire gateway with a new box. Now everything seems to be installed the right way. I have a feeling the primary issue was the nicked jumper pairs in the NID.

Ants in iNID

Last year I got these pesky ants in there and managed to fight them off eventually.

This year they are back and worse... and so far I am losing the fight.
These ants are not fire ants - they don't bite.
Just some black ant that seems to be invading in recent years.
(our fire ants have actually vanished over the last 2-3 years)

I had an exterminator try some chemicals but they don't seem to help much.

Any suggestions on how to keep these buggers out?
