Advice on new install coming next week.

Having lurked on these forums for years and always found valuable advice I figure this would be a good place to ask these questions and possibly get accurate answers.

Next week I am having UVerse installed. Usual reasons, it sounded like a much better deal than Comcast. Full package, Internet, VOIP, and TV.

Currently I have Cable for Internet and TV, Bellsouth POTS phone, and Brinks Security service on the phone line.

Home network is a mix of Mac and PC computers with a Linksys Cable modem, Cisco/Linksys RVS4000 Gateway, Netgear WAP, and a couple of Netgear Gigabit switches. I installed the Cisco with the intent of getting the VPN into the home working since I travel a lot. I am still tinkering with that. MBP settings still eluding me. I am also using DynDNS.

I want to keep the Home network separate from the TV network and still reachable for VPN access.

It would seem I need to run RJ45 to the 2 TV locations that currently do not have it.

STBs link to RG and RVS4000 connect to RG.

At that point I need advice. What settings to use for the RVS4000 and the RG. I would like to be able to VPN into the LAN segment. Is this even possible?

Using a 3rd party VDSL modem

First of all, if this is a taboo subject for the group, please go ahead and dump the thread, I'm not trying to cause trouble, just trying to further my understandng of why it is not possible;

from what I've picked up from here and other boards:

* U-Verse is VDSL/VDSL2, so a VDSL compliant modem will sync, assuming its capable of syncing at the correct rates

* the 2wire posts to a URL (https://cwmp.c01.sbcglobal.net/cwmp/services/CWMP) on a regular basis. If the POST does not happen, then service to the port is shut down

* the POST is encrypted and so its not possible to make that POST from a 3rd party device - which is intentional to verify that the 2wire gateway is still there

* AT&T authenticates the MAC address of the modem - however is this part of the POST?

* there is some talk that you can get something "between" POSTS, but nobody really specified if it was IP service; just that the service is disabled if the POST doesn't happen

is that it?

STB Software update

I've been away for a while, but didn't see this posted in the last couple days...

In the early morning (about 12:15am) of Nov. 25th (I think) I did a soft reboot from the menu of a STB. Upon booting back up, it went right to updating software, saying it would take up to 40 minutes :o. Luckily it sped up and only took about 15-20 minutes. I was getting excited the whole time expecting 3HD, but alas, I can't find anything different. I don't know what my software version prior to the update was, but now it is 1.6.25080.2.

Is this new and or did something get added I can't find? The only thing I think is different is the ATT Uverse boot up screen is orange now... I think it was blue (?)

ATT U-verse in Louisville, KY and suburbs

Has anybody heard if AT&T U-verse is coming to Louisville soon. There have been whispers about this, but I cannot find anything definite about it. I have been seeing a lot of AT&T trucks around but I was not sure what they were doing. Thanks for your help in advance.

U-verse maximum speed estimate?

Hi,

I'm considering my broadband options for the apartment I'm moving into in Oakland, and would like to find out what kind of maximum speed I could expect for a U-verse VDSL connection.

Online DSL prequal tests limit me to 1.5Mbps or less down, because of my distance from the nearest CO. I have a suspicion that U-verse isn't going to give me a faster connection, but it seems worth investigating.

I've tried talking to AT&T online chat support, but despite talking to regular sales, U-verse, and DSL support staff, I've been unable to get an answer.

I'll happily provide the apartment's address if there's anyone here who can assist me.

Thanks,

SZ

Getting U-verse internet by itself.

I have asked about this, and done some research and it seems that this is not allowed, though some say they have ordered it with the TV and canceled afterward.

I personally am happy with free OTA and DVD TV, and I see no reason to pay for the extra TV that doesn't interest me in the least. I find such a requirement akin to extortion, seeing as how they are one of the few privileged companies that are allowed to run cables and fiber to provide such services, and am considering rallying complaints against these practices. I was happy when Comcast dropped their policy regarding subscription to TV service in this area.

I wonder if AT&T has plans in the near future to drop the greedy attitude and provide their services in a more reasonable and fair fashion? Requiring one to purchase television service in order to be serviced with higher quality internet is completely absurd IMO!

U-Voice Anonymous Call Blocking Message Not Detailed Enough

The U-Voice Anonymous Call Blocking message does not provide information to callers as to why their call was rejected. It currently states "This number does not accept your call". It should state something like "This number does not accept calls from blocked numbers" so that callers know to unblock their calls. Any suggestions on who to contact and request this change?
