Help! Getting Ubuntu 8.04 to recognize my wireless card

I cannot get Ubuntu 8.04 to consistently recognize my wireless card. I was able to briefly get it to see the wireless networks and allow me to choose one and enter a password. But it timed out while trying to connect, and the wireless options disappeared from the menu.

Now, when I click on the networking icon, I get only options for a wired network. My wifi light is now on, which is new, but I can't find a way to connect.

I computer is a Dell Studio running 64-bit Vista and Ubuntu 8.04 (dual boot). The wireless card is a Dell Wireless 1397 WLAN Mini Card and the Driver information says Broadcom 4.170.77.3.

I did install two inf files from my Windows driver folder, but this did not seem to make any difference.

This is the last glitch I have to work out before I can pronounce my first Linux installation a success.

Transcoding a semi-rich MKV file

Good morning, everybody!
I've used VLC and various flavors of ffmpeg for some time now on a somewhat amateur basis for viewing and transcoding files with much success, but I find myself in a position now where I'm stuck using those and other tools to get a particular task accomplished. I was hoping that somebody out there might be able to help me out

In short, I have some .mkv files which have two audio tracks (English and Japanese) and a subtitle track. I'd like to be able to convert this file for use on my AppleTV - which basically means QuickTime. QT itself, iTunes and the ATV will handle a media file with these characteristics, but I'm unsure as to how to actually get the conversion done. The best possible solution would be to preserve both language tracks and the subtitle track so that I can use the display software to pick which one(s) I want to use at viewing time. If that's not possible, I guess that dropping the primary (Japanese) audio track in favor of the secondary (English) audio track and dropping the subtitles altogether would be a workable (though inferior) alternate solution.

So... Does anybody have any suggestions as to what that command might look like? I'm using OS X if that makes any difference. If a single step won't do it, I'd be perfectly happy with a series of steps to extract individual audio tracks and the subtitles separately so that I can assemble them later (likely using QT Pro.)

Thanks in advance!

Nagios 3 front ends?

Anyone have any recommendations for a UI that simplifies writing config files?

The lack of a UI has always been my biggest annoyance with Nagios. ZenOSS, Zabbix, and OpenNMS all have a UI that lets you do config.

Choosing distro arch

I'm thinking of replacing my webserver with a Pentium D 820 (btw, how does that compare to a Pentium 650 or A64 3000+?).

It's a 64bit CPU, so naturally I'm considering a 64bit OS. Are there any real gains in 64bit for typical server operations? Can I still install 32bit apps? That would be my main concern. I know the repos have almost everything covered in 64bit as well, but there might be some odd app I want to run that doesn't have a 64bit version available.

Box would have 2GB of RAM and a SCSI drive, and for my light usage it should not be I/O bound.

[Ubuntu] X-server Problem Won't Start Once again

Once again I have encountered an Xserver problem with Ubuntu 8.10. I never had these problems when I was running on Edgy. However the error shows as follow:

Backtrace:0: /usr/bin/X11/X(xf86SigHandler+0x79) [0x80c3009]1: [0xb7f63400]2: /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers//radeon_drv.so [0xb7a44c27]3: /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers//radeon_drv.so [0xb7a1255a]4: /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers//radeon_drv.so [0xb7a154fc]5: /usr/bin/X11/X(InitOutput+0x96f) [0x80aac9f]6: /usr/bin/X11/X(main+0x279) [0x8071b19]7: /lib/tls/i686/cmov/libc.so.6(__libc_start_main+0xe5) [0xb7b68685]8: /usr/bin/X11/X [0x8071101]Saw signal 11. Server aborting.giving up.xinit: Connection refused (errno 111): unable to connect to X serverxinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error.
I have tried the following commands as seen in another thread from Linuxquestons.org (http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/ubuntu-63/x-server-wont-load-after-8.10-upgrade.-680377/ ).
sudo apt-get remove --purge fglrx*sudo apt-get remove --purge xserver-xorg-video-atisudo apt-get remove --purge xserver-xorg-video-radeonhdsudo apt-get remove --purge xserver-xorg-video-radeonsudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-radeon
Anyone have any suggestions. I did disable the propitiatory ATI driver because I was having issues with the driver from ATI, but I disabled it via Hardware drivers. Everything was running fine and I had even done a restart and it continued to work. Today I booted the laptop and it will not work.

One of the differences I notice in my error message compared to others is mine states:
/usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers//radeon_drv.so
while the others only have /, as well as different memory slot. Not sure if it is at all relevant but figure might help someone help me.

RSync options to sync data between two HDD's

On my NAS (freenas), I hooked up a second drive via USB that I can remove and put off-site.

I did this to initially synchronize the drives. The master is using the mountpoint "/mnt/nas" and the USB one is using "/mnt/nas2".

rsync -p -r --progress /mnt/nas/* /mnt/nas2/

Now... here's my question. If I change something on /mnt/nas and re-rsync it, I want it to delete what needs to be deleted on /mnt/nas2 and add what needs to be added on /mnt/nas2. I don't want /mnt/nas to be modified at all.

Is the above the correct command line to do this, or am I missing some arguments? I'm asking here because I'm not clear after reading the man page.

Thanks! :)

Help: Getting UbuntU 8.10 to recognize my MP3 files

Today I installed Ubuntu 8.10 on my new Dell Studio 15 (Dual Core 2.0 GHz, 4 GB RAM, 320 GB HDD. I set it up to dual-boot Vista and Ubuntu.

Before I installed Ubuntu, I transferred about 80 GB of MP3 files onto the hard drive and imported them into iTunes.

My question is this: is there any way I can get the MP3 player included with Ubuntu to find and play these files? Right now, it looks like they don't exist when I am in Ubuntu, which I am guessing is because they are tucked away on the Vista side. But what can I do to make them available in both environments, short of importing them and saving them to the HD a second time?

If there is an online resource to answer this, feel free to point me there. I am new to Linux.

Thanks!

Looking to buy a USB Wireless adapter for use in Ubuntu 8.10

I cannot believe how much trouble a new installation of Ubuntu has been causing me recently. Long story short, I'm looking for just one USB wireless adapter that supports WPA, is available at Best Buy or some other brick and mortar store, and most importantly: works out of the box with Ubuntu 8.10.

I've looked in the Ubuntu WifiDocs wiki (which is a bit of a mess) and maybe its just me, but I cannot seem to locate a readily available USB wireless NIC that doesnt seem to have some type of problem with Ubuntu that requires meddling by the end user (this install will be done remotely with someone that isnt linux or commandline savvy)

Is there just ONE out there? Does such a trouble-free USB wireless NIC exist?

Thanks in advance.
