Linux Mint 8 (Helena) RC1 available for download

I hope Linux Mint 8 will deal with the new upstream GNOME and Grub 2 with more "elegance" than Ubuntu Karmic. We might as well see for ourselves!

Here is the announcement by clem: http://www.linuxmint.com/blog/?p=1106

Here is a link to the .torrent file: http://www.linuxmint.com/torrent/LinuxMint-8-RC1.iso.torrent

This is the one I've been really anticipating, even before Ubuntu Karmic was released. It's all about presentation, and so far I've found Linux Mint 7 to be the best Linux distro to convert / impress Window users. Let's see if Linux Mint 8 can take its place...

Hello everyone, I'm new to this particular forum room, and could use some help helping a friend with a particular webpages functionality on Ubuntu 9.1 Karmic Koala.

The website is http://www.voxli.com

Would anybody be able to hold my hand and explain how to get it working if it is even possible?

Please and thank you.

Novell Strips BitTorrent DHT Technology From openSUSE

From TorrentFreak
November 22, 2009 - said by Ernesto :The Pirate Bay’s tracker closure has spurred several discussions about DHT, BitTorrent’s fallback technology for when central trackers are unavailable. According to some, DHT has some problems of its own. Novell, for example, decided to ship openSUSE with the BitTorrent client Transmission, but not before stripping DHT support.

Sponsored by Novell, openSUSE is a free and Open Source operating system, based on Linux. Following in the footsteps of Ubuntu, OpenSUSE recently decided to include Transmission as the default BitTorrent client.

However, the addition of Transmission to openSUSE was not straightforward. Since Transmission comes with DHT support – a technology that helps BitTorrent users to find peers – Novell thought that the application could possibly make openSUSE liable for copyright infringement under German law.

In order to avoid legal problems, Novell and openSUSE therefore decided to ship the operating system with a DHT-less version of Transmission while they tried to work out a solution with their lawyer.

“This month’s new release of their openSUSE Linux distro now ships with Transmission as the default BitTorrent client, but with DHT support removed at compile-time due to perceived German legal risks,” Transmission developer Charles Kerr told TorrentFreak.

After discussion with Novell’s German lawyer, it was agreed to include Transmission with DHT in future releases, but with an added popup informing users that they should only use the BitTorrent client for legal transfers. This means that the next openSUSE release will include a fully-functional BitTorrent client.

Charles Kerr told TorrentFreak that he is happy with the outcome, especially since Transmission will also add support for Magnet links in their upcoming 1.8 release.

“Magnet links are much more useful when DHT is available, so I’m glad it will be included in the next openSUSE release,” he said, adding that openSUSE have been very helpful and communicative, which is why there’s a better resolution in the works for the next openSUSE release.

Still, one can’t help but wonder if Novell had legitimate concerns, or was maybe a little paranoid in handling the DHT issue. That said, if BitTorrent indeed comes to rely more on trackerless torrents and DHT in the future, could BitTorrent clients potentially become a target for the entertainment industry?

Packman has the uncrippled version.

Microsoft Patents Sudo's Behavior

Lordy, lordy, lordy. They have no shame. It appears that Microsoft has just patented sudo, a personalized version of it.

Making a bootable Windows disk with Ubuntu

On a Windows machine I'm fixing for someone, it boots halfway and winds up rebooting on the file mup.sys. I put in an Ubuntu disk and it warned be the hard drive was failing and there are many bad sectors. The drive was still accessible in Ubuntu so I backed up the client's important data.

What I would like to do is take the still-accessible Windows partition and use a program in Ubuntu (or Terminal commands if not too daunting) and make a Windows disk I can install to a new hard drive when I put one in. I doubt the client wants to purchase Windows XP all over again and put his data back.

Is there any way to do this?

Xfce - preserving `all desktops' settings && and subwindows?

Howdy,

It seems when I set an application's attribute to be `all desktops', it's not preserved across reboots. Is there a hidden parameter to ensure the setting is preserved?

Also, KDE 3.x `knotes' creates subwindows for each `post-it' note. I'd like to ensure each post-it inherits the parent's `all desktops' settings. On KDE 3.X, this was possible (haven't dinked around with KDE 4.x .. yet.

Cheers,
-pablo
