Re: bootp server - port 67

It appears I have the port 67 open on my newly purchased router, even though I have disable DCHP services and dont operate a web server. Can anyone tell me why this could be open or how to close it?

Re: bootp server - port 67

Hello,

with my router I have the same effect.
the only thing I discovered is to enable DMZ in your router "misc.config." than the port seems to be closed.
You should expect the opposite as the -DMZ disabled- should provide extra security! (DeMilitarized Zone). regards

Re: same here port 67 open

Yes, leaving a any port open matters. Most often hackers use compuers in large distributed attacks. So while it may not hurt you directly, by leaving a port open you're allowing hackers to attack major internet throroughfares.
Of more concern to you, hackers can use another computer as a bounce box making illegal activities seem to originate from you.
Thirdly, if a hacker decides to do so, they can waste your diskspace, cpu power, and bandwidth by installing a P2P server for instance.

Don't bother using linux if you don't already know it, instead try something like Sygate (Which is free and EASY) at »download.com.com/3000-2092-10184···lst-0-5/

The Ultimate Fix Gentlemen and/or Women!!!!

Use Linux as your firewall and internet gateway... Simply filter the port, both TCP and UDP... bye bye birdie!

linux is lovely....

so, now that you have come up with the ultimate solution, would you care to inform us of the best way in whick to accomplish it? in other words, i understand that linux is a purportedly superior OS than windows, but how would we be able to know if the firewall we are behind is running on linux?

Linux Rulez

I was one of the people involved with ICH5 (chipset) design at Intel, and I will vouch u can secure a linux box air tight until there is nothing u can do with it, even run simple vim, well the good thing about windows is it is user friendly, but not as secure as linux can be. Linux is for people who know unix, if u dont stick with windows and retail firewalls.

HotBrick config

According to the broadbandreports.com port scan, my company's HotBrick firewall (model VPN 1200/2) is exposing UDP port 67 on the WAN side. Should be disable that? If so, can someone tell me how to reconfigure our HotBrick?

Re: HotBrick config

Hotbrick claims this was left open in case you need your device to attain it's WAN IP via DHCP. You'll notice if you do a UDP scan here: »scan.sygate.com/preudpscan.html that not only is that port open, but the remaining UDP ports are only "closed", not "stealthed" like the TCP ports are. This could be bad depending on how well their software is written.

Why did they do this? Their tech, Italo says it was done that way to save money. I'm scared.

UDP 67 : OPEN

So I just did the port scan, and the results say UDP 67 : OPEN.

What does that mean? Is that bad? If so, what do I do about it?

I already run ZoneAlarm firewall so I thought my computer was secure.

Re: UDP 67 : OPEN

I am constantly having to renew with ipconfig due to connectivity issues with my cable modem. What is the best thing to do? Leave it open or open every time I need (its such a hassle).
