It appears that port 138/udp is used to broadcast information on browse lists and elections from a Windows Master Browser to Windows workstations.
If you filter (block) this port over a LAN, your ability to browse other machines on the LAN may be limited.
This port can be filtered from leaving your LAN (going out to the Internet) with no problems. [text was edited by author 2003-04-17 19:47:24]

I have Win2k Pro and have no networking installed (except TCP/IP protocol), yet 137 & 138 UDP are still open. The TCP ports are all closed/filtered.

| Re: average joe Don't worry about it is it is a UDP port...if you are behind a Linux box...you can ignore it completely...it is a connectionless UDP port with minimal security risk. Even on windows...if only your UDP ports are open...relax...nobody is going to be playing with you much, ie, It is much easier to steal a car with the keys in it...why would I want to sit a plug away at a machine that is locked down a bit...when there are so many that are wide open. | |
