[DTA] HD-DTA's are here in Springfield, IL - a review

No, this is NOT a joke...evidently, we actually rated above Chicago for getting something new. :D :D
This was a complete shock to me tonight...I was actually taking 1 of my (no longer FREE) DTA's back to our local office - & actually walked out with a new Moto u-DTA-M instead!

I GOTTA tell you this first - when I was talking to the counter guy while he was taking my SD-DTA back, was telling about "you can go down to K-mart & buy their $16 boxes, that do the same thing as these CC $2 DTA's. (I SWEAR I am NOT making this up!!!) When I brought up the little issue with "encryption", he says, "well yea, it doesn't work on expanded basic service, but will work just fine on limited basic channels". I proceed to tell him he must have missed all the memos re: limited basic encryption coming - which IS actually then how he ended up bringing me out an actual, honest-to-god HD-DTA - because after his outlandish comments above, as well as him INSISTING limited basic is NOT getting encrypted, I really thought he was bringing me just another type of SD-DTA. I even tried to explain to him "uh, THAT'S why you guys ARE now getting HD-DTA's...HELLO!!!"
And THIS is what CC has working on their "front lines" - WOW!!! :o :o Even the tech support guy I called tonight, had a good laugh when I told him this. (more on that call later)

Anyway, I just could NOT resist getting the HD-DTA; since I'm planning on keeping 1 DTA anyway, I'll be taking back the SD-DTA next week. (ended up being 20 min late for a dinner engagement)
The HD-DTA came with the XR2 remote control, an HDMI cable & 2 coax jumpers.

OK, so first order of business is to hook it up & activate it. After plugging in the power adapter, it did a download for about 5 min, then went to the "we have detected a problem..." screen. So I went & attempted to activate it online. Of course, it never activates, even after rebooting & reactivating, then trying it over the auto activate phone script. So it sent me over to tech support.

Evidently, the problem turned out to be, that when a CSR or counter person scans this onto your account, it has to be placed into a certain "hierarchy", in order for it to activate - which the tech support CSR immediately fixed & it came right on. I asked him for specifics on this, so that I can tell others that end up going thru the same hassle on activation, they can then tell the CSR how to fix it quickly & not be spinning their wheels for hours. ;)

So it's now up & running & I have had a chance to play with it a bit, here is some of how it's functionality works:

- It WILL respond to the earlier DTA (simple) remotes for all functions, EXCEPT for the LANG button (has to be changed in setup menu)

- Has internal volume/mute available, & affects BOTH HDMI & RF out. However, like the earlier DTA remotes, once you prog a TV code, you can no longer control the internal DTA volume - so I'd make sure the internal volume IS turned up all the way, BEFORE prog the TV code. (I actually have had to fix this problem a couple times for some friends DTA's that had low audio levels...)

- HDMI & RF outputs CAN both be used simultaneously, including on HD channels; however, on the RF output, all HD channels get center-cut. (I tested to an HDTV & SDTV both turned on) Even though there was a HDMI menu option for 4:3, 16:9 & AUTO, I could not find a way to make it so you could make the RF output letterbox or squeezed down

- On the HDMI setup menu, in addition to the above option, there is another one for the 4 standard output resolutions (480i/p, 720p, 1080i) plus an AUTO setting - which the DTA was defaulted to. While I was thinking it was going to be a "native" setting - it appears to simply downconvert EVERY channel (HD included) to 480p, but DOES give you a 16:9 picture on the HD channels.
Bottom line - unless you go in & change the output resolution to one of the 2 (HD) settings, you ain't getting an HD picture out of this thing! :hmm:

- I have NOT been able to get the RF remote pairing feature enabled. The setup menu shows it ENABLED, & the remote IS an RF version; it too has the pairing instructions printed on the back - but it just won't pair. Guess I'll try tech support tomorrow - unless anyone here knows a "secret"...

- None of the A-D color buttons, as well as the GUIDE button, seem to do any functions on the DTA. The big Xfinity button takes you into the setup menu

- Other setup options include channel locks/PIN & Close Caption settings; I did not really play with these, although I did see choices for analog & digital CC settings, as well as font selection

- Channel changes seem to be about the same speed as the SD-DTA's, & regardless if it's SD or HD channels

So speaking of channels, the question we were wondering is what channels WOULD you get on these, namely the HD's. Here is what I am able to receive; keep in mind I have Digital Preferred HD service, & of course, YMMV on YOUR system.

- I can view ALL SD & HD channels up thru our Digital Starter tier channels, including the HD-only channels like Velocity, Palladia & Universal HD
- I can view the following Digital Preferred SD channels: TeenNick, DIY, Hub, Nat Geo & Science; however, any HD versions of these are NOT available (our system has HD feeds for the last 4 channels)
- All channels in MultiLatino are now mapped in our DTA's; because of this, I can also view the ones that ALSO happen to be part of Digital Preferred down here, such as Nuvo TV, MTV Tr3s, Galavision & the East feeds only of Univision, UniMas & Telemundo
- The only channels in the Sports/Entertainment pkg that can be viewed, are both the Eng/Spanish versions of BeIN sports; as well as any that happen to also be part of Dig Starter. (only Hallmark Movie channel on our system)

I did not compare the mapping between the SD & HD DTA's themselves, as I just swapped the remaining SD-DTA w/the HD-DTA; but they seem to be the same. (except for the HD channels, of course) Because we are STILL saddled with that crazy dual-mapped expanded basic channel lineup from the Insight days, (expanded basic channels on BOTH 2 & 3 digit numbers) it's a giant PITA to scan through everything on the DTA's!

I will try & answer any other questions you might have on this.

Well, I'm pooped for tonight - talk amongst yourselves... :D

[DVR] DVR UI

I am having Comcast installed in a few days. My question is about the user interface (the guide, menus, etc.). I have no idea what brand of equipment we will receive in our area (central Indiana).

We will either end up with separate DVR's or the "Anyroom" service. My question is whether or not the "Anyroom" service and equipment come with a different UI than the standard DVR and receivers . We know what that looks like...yuck.

Thanks.

New Guides for SA/Cisco Areas (Info from Ted Hodgins Blog)

The following posts are from Comcast's Ted Hodgins, Sr. Director, Video Product Development - Navigation, in Media & Entertainment, "New Guide for Scientific Atlanta Cable Boxes" blog:

http://blog.comcast.com/2010/05/new-guide-for-scientific-atlanta-cable-boxes.html

They contain information about the new Comcast guides for the SA/Cisco areas.

quote:Hi Ted,

I know the current guide for the SA/Cisco areas is called S25 and the guide for Cisco AnyRoom DVR functionality is called On-Screen Guide 2.0. What is the name of the guide that will be released this summer for the SA STBs?

Will Cisco RNG STBs get this guide or will they skip it and only get On-Screen Guide 2.0?

Thanks,

Russ

http://blog.comcast.com/2010/05/new-guide-for-scientific-atlanta-cable-boxes.html#comment-45717 quote:Hello Russ. The S25 name you referenced for this guide is not a customer-facing name but yes that is a name we use internally when referring to this version of the guide. You can see the S25p3 naming in the guide configuration menu. The next version of the guide coming out over the summer is labeled internally as S26.

For others, here is some inside baseball: The version number (S25, S26) of the on-screen guide for your cable box can be found in the guide's setup menu.

Press the Menu button twice on the silver Comcast remote control, select Setup, then Cable Box setup, arrow down to Configuration and 'Select to display' and press OK/Select.

The line immediately underneath the Review Configuration header will show you the version of the guide currently on your cable box. The first few characters (S25p3) indicate the guide code number. A change in guide code number on that box would indicate an update to the guide.

Don't worry. You will hear about the new guide from us in advance in a few different ways (other than having to constantly check your guide code number via the above)!

What area is getting which guide and when depends a lot on time, geography and hardware (cable box type) with a few moving parts to make it interesting.

To try and put it simply, most all Scientific-Atlanta branded cable boxes will be receiving this new guide (S26) regardless of where you happen to live. Some smaller quantities of older models of SA boxes (about 1% of our deployed boxes in SA-Cisco footprint) will get a guide update without the iTV applications.

In some areas (Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Mississippi, Tennessee, Louisiana, Texas, Minnesota and New Mexico), we plan to deliver On-Screen Guide 2.0 this year to the Cisco RNG series (RNG 100, 150 and 200) of cable boxes. Some of these areas may get S26 on their Cisco box first before getting On-Screen Guide 2.0. Other areas may go directly to On-Screen Guide 2.0 on newly deployed Cisco RNG cable boxes.

The deployment sequence, customer communication plan and employee training plan will take that into consideration as each market will be at a different stage of the On-Screen Guide 2.0 process.

Other SA/Cisco areas that are in states that I have not listed above are not currently targeted for On-Screen Guide 2.0 this year and some of those areas (that I have not listed) may get our On-Screen Guide 3.0 (also called the X1 guide) this year or next year.

The long term plan is to get all of our newest cable boxes (regardless of hardware manufacturer or geography) onto a common guide starting in 2013 to provide a consistent experience.

I am a FIOS customer looking to make a switch to Comcast. The X1 sounds like it is light years ahead of what FIOS currently offers. I just spent 30 minutes chatting with a Comcast rep who tried to convince me that the box doesn't exist and no Comcast customers have one.

Comcast "Welcomes Back" Jersey Shore Customers
Additional customer support, resources available to Hurricane Sandy-impacted towns
PR Newswire - May 15, 2013

quote:Comcast is welcoming back New Jersey shore customers, many of whom were impacted by Superstorm Sandy in October 2012. The company, which upgraded 144 miles of infrastructure supporting the hardest hit Jersey Shore communities, is also announcing newly-renovated service centers with increased staffing and weekend hours; additional service technicians and other benefits to help customers starting May 25. More than 170 additional technicians have been committed to maintain and improve the network in shore areas, perform installations and proactively service outside cable lines that may have been affected by storm waters and other conditions.
:
In time for the summer season, new and returning Comcast customers will be among the first in the state with access to a lineup of new services, including:

• The next-generation X1 Platform from XFINITY for TV, a cloud-enabled service unlike any other existing today;

• The new XFINITY Wireless Gateway with the nation's fastest wireless speeds and coverage for devices throughout connected homes;

• XFINITY Home featuring 24/7 security monitoring and a suite of home automation services that offer lighting and climate control, video monitoring, custom text and e-mail alerts and more on mobile devices;

• Thousands of additional XFINITY WiFi hotspots, allowing customers to experience fast Internet service both inside and outside of the home.

For fast and easy installations and reconnections, popular self-installation options are available, as are two-hour technician appointment windows. At Jersey Shore service centers, the number of workstations has been nearly doubled to provide more expedited, one-on-one attention for customers. This includes centers in Absecon (Pleasantville), Avalon, Brick, Northfield, Ocean City and Wildwood.

The Avalon, Long Beach Island and Pleasantville service centers have been newly renovated and, although Comcast's Ocean City facility was permanently destroyed by Sandy, two temporary trailers have been installed to service customers.

A Welcome Back campaign including TV, radio and print advertising will reach customers with special offers and Comcast will host dozens of movie nights and other weekend events in shore towns.

Customers who have questions or want to reconnect their Comcast services can call a dedicated phone line at 1-800-2SUMMER.

I just heard a brand new radio commercial for the new Xfinity X1 cable box on local radio station 94.1 WIP Sports radio. But like others have said its currently only available for new residents and customers :( I am a long time Triple Play customer and I wonder if I called up and complained if I could get comcast to hook me up with a few X1 boxes? My guess not very likely :( But the good news is at least its here for new customers so maybe spring or summer 2013 it will be available for the rest of the Triple Play customers.

If anyone here in Philly gets it maybe you can give us a nice review with some photos and video :)

[STB] Cisco thinking of getting out of the set-top box business?

Don't know how much to trust the NY Post, but here is their article on Cisco thinking of getting out of the set-top box business:

Cisco thinking out of the set-top box biz
NY Post - February 20, 2012
http://www.nypost.com/p/news/business/cisco_thinking_out_of_the_set_top_cjsQHGTCpO3DKevYzs7ysI#ixzz1mxCWOYew

"After six years, Cisco is looking to switch off its Scientific-Atlanta cable set-top box business, The Post has learned.

The Internet equipment maker, which in 2006 paid close to $7 billion for the tech firm, has put the company on the block as margins in that business have come under pressure, according to a source following the situation.

“I know Cisco is out looking to sell Scientific-Atlanta,” the source said.

A Cisco spokeswoman declined to comment.

Much has changed in the set-top box business since Cisco acquired S-A, most of all the streaming of Internet content and the race to introduce video on multiple platforms.

Arguably, the set-top box is becoming outdated.

The most likely buyers are private equity firms, who often look to pay reasonably-low purchase multiples for mature businesses which they can use as cash cows, another source said.

Microsoft had an interest in 2006, a source said, but much has changed in five years.

Cisco has said it’s moving from set-top boxes to Videoscape, a product built on technology gained from Scientific-Atlanta that allows media companies to deliver content through the cloud to smart phones and tablets.

In a public filing, Cisco said its key manufacturing facilities for Scientific-Atlanta’s products are located in Juarez, Mexico, and in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2011, it entered into an agreement to sell them to one of its contract manufacturers.

Cisco closed trading Friday at $20.29 a share, up more than 12 percent this year after a rough 2011 that saw its shares lose roughly 8 percent of their value."

[Cable Card] Ceton InfiniTV and some channel problems.

Hello folks,

I got new Ceton InfiniTV 4 USB package last year and set it up today. I contacted Comcast and they successfully paired CableCARD M-card and can see my Ceton device. Then I set Windows Media Center up but have problems with some channels.

When I tuned into channel 236 (Science Fiction HD channel), I got blank screen for a few seconds then Subscription required displayed. I was able watch SD version (channel 75). With Cable TV box, I was able watch same channel. I checked channel status and got info:

Signal Level: 3.2 dBmv
S/N ratio: 37.6 dB

Then I tuned back to channel 75 and got info:

Signal Level: 6.8 dBmv
S/N ratio: 38.3 dB

However, I noticed that CCI flag was 0x02 (Copy once). However I remember that Comcast's policy are all channels as copy-free except premium channels (HBO, MAX, etc.). Most channels are useless to other apps than Windows Media Center. :(

Does anyone have any solutions?

DVR Extender w/Moto Boxes

As mentioned earlier on this web site, Comcast is beginning to roll out DVR extender compatibility with Motorola DVRs. I was so excited when I heard this that I called Comcast and asked if it was really true. The lady said, yes, but they have only certified one drive, the WD My Book AV 1TB eSata drive. I asked, "Has this been enabled in my area?" She said. "Yes!"

To be honest I had my doubts but I ordered the model from WD that specifically cited Comcast compatibility, anyway. Well, of course it doesn't work (shoulda known) but it appears this capability is on the way so at least I'll be ready from Day 1.

As I write this, looks like only Indiana gets to extend their DVRs so far. I'll be patient and keep my drive plugged in and wait.

For more info, you can see this page on Comcast's web site (which I didn't find until after buying the drive):

[DVR] DVR History missing

I noticed recently that my DVR has no DVR history. When you go to list it, it just says "No Listings Available". The diagnostics says the history should be 28 days, and I haven't noticed any other issues.

I don't remember the last time I looked. I don't know if it's something with A30 or not.
