[BC] Download problem - "Connection reset by peer" errrors

Hi,

I've been having problems with HTTP downloads failing before they complete. This is happening repeatedly on downloads of all sizes, at random points in the download (after 32100K, 4850K, 1750K, 31050K, etc), and the common error message is "Connection reset by peer".

It does not seem to depend on client OS (WinXP, Linux) or browser (Firefox, IE). I've tested on all of these, and have the same problem. The servers I'm connecting to are all high-availability sites (bloglines.com, libsyn.com, cbc.ca, cachefly.net, publicradio.org, ubuntu.com, python.org) and I'm certain they're not the problem. The files I'm trying to download include RSS feeds, podcasts (MP3), and assorted software packages.

From this I'm pretty sure it's a Telus problem (either at the router or the gateway server for our ADSL connection). Does Telus do any traffic shaping which might be causing this?

I've had to resort to using wget to download complete files because it automatically restarts interrupted downloads and it gives some output which I can log. This is inconvenient, though.

Any ideas or suggestions on how to fix and/or approach Telus on this? I spent some time on the phone today, variously on-hold, getting disconnected, and finally talking to a guy who couldn't help me beyond telling me that if my internet connection is working then there was nothing further he could do to help (and he said there was NO ONE he could transfer me to who could).

What I'd really like is to be able to talk to someone at Telus who knows something about networking and troubleshooting. I don't fault the poor guy who I talked to today, but this is beyond his "unplug the router & restart your computer" solution. Is there a Telus employee trolling this forum who can contact me?

Thanks!

[BC] bad connection, pages not loading

My connection has had problems for a week or more. Pages either load slowly or not at all. I'm in BC.

Service: Telus 1.5mbps ADSL, month to month, not on a contract.
Modem: D-Link DSL-300G, about 4 years old, part of the quick start kit from Telus.
Router: none. Direct PC-to-modem connection.

Vancouver server:

Toronto server:

Miami server:

Telus' website says that if I request a repair, "Service charges may apply if your trouble is caused by damaged telephone wiring in your residence or equipment, such as telephones and modems, that is not rented from TELUS."

Suggestions?

[ALL] Is this breaking AUP?

Hi,

i currently have a Shaw connection but I'm looking at ordering a telus adsl connection for the purpose of streaming an internet radio station that I have.

This connection will be dedicated to 100% up streaming of an internet radio station (legally) to a server that is then re-distributing that stream to a much larger audience.

I called Telus and the person I spoke with wasn't too sure, she mentioned in the AUP it states "no public open relays" but for my situation it wasn't public, and it wasn't really a open relay.

I'm looking at either the 3.0 or 6.0 package, I'd probably be using 90% of the bandwidth usage cap per month but it will be ALL upstream, so I don't want Telus to kick me off for that.

If worst comes to worst, I can sign up for a small business package but I'd rather the cost isn't so high as internet radio isn't cheap. :D

Thanks for any suggestions!

Weird Telus problem email delivery

Alright, bare with me. I'm currently tackling a bizarre email issue for a client using MS Exchange 2003 who is a former Telus Hosting customer.

Sending is fine, but receiving seems to have occasional missing emails. Sometimes, when someone external to them emails so_and_so@theircompany.com, the emails are never received. Sometimes the senders complain that the messages just get bounced back with a server response of "no such user".

Here is the current path of mail delivery:

theircompany.com (registrar)
> theircompany.com - DNS A record resolves to theoretical IP of 10.0.0.0
> theircompany.com - one DNS MX record which points back to theircompany.com

> Theoretical IP of 10.0.0.1 is their WAN IP of a router.
> The router then forwards port 25 to their internal exchange server of (lets call it 10.0.0.2).
> Users then connect to the exchange server using Outlook 2003.

So to simplify further...
theircompany.com (resolves 10.0.0.1), router forwards to 10.0.0.2.

Pretty straight forward way of receiving email, right?

Every single time I test sending from my email (separate server) to one of their accounts, everything goes through fine. No issues whatsoever. And this is the case most of the time. But the problem is with how many senders cannot reach them, and I'm at a loss for fixing it.

I have however noticed a pattern developing though. It seems like senders sending through Telus never make it through. For example, if I use telnet directly to my own smtp server, mail from: me@myownserver.com, rcpt to: so_and_so@theircompany.com, the message makes it through. However, and here's the kicker... If I telnet to smtp.telus.net, mail from: (myowntelusaccount@telus.net) and rcpt to: so_and_so@theircompany.com, I receive back an error message from Telus SMTP of "Recipient address rejected: User unknown". My own Telus webmail also reports "Invalid Email Address" if I attempt sending to anybody at theircompany.com.

Thus, it almost seems like Telus thinks theircompany.com is internal to Telus, so it refuses to route it to it's true location resolved by their registrar, hence why it thinks the user doesn't exist. I've even had a packet sniffer running on port 25 on their WAN connection which never even sees my incoming mail attempt from Telus, however it sees all other incoming mail. Because of this, I am 100% positive the problem is not with their router, internal network, nor server.

To further my suspicion, it turns out that 2 years ago, this client had their domain with Telus as their registrar AND email host. They accessed it at that time via POP. So then, 2 years ago, when they got their new Exchange server put in, the domain name was transferred to a new registrar, and the domain was then set to resolve to their WAN IP. Everything seemed perfect, or so we thought. Apparently ever since that switch over 2 years ago, the client has indeed had incoming emails go missing sporadically.

So are you thinking what I'm thinking? It's almost like Telus SMTP servers get messed up on routing to theircompany.com because it thinks theircompany.com is still hosting with Telus when it isn't. This is as far as I've gotten. And now, I'm at a loss for how to fix this. I can't tell every sender who has problems to redirect all of their outgoing mail around Telus SMTP servers. The client no longer has a login nor account ID for their old domain/hosting plan, so how do I troubleshoot it myself?

I'm planning to call Telus tomorrow, but I'm not looking forward to it. They'll probably tell me to reboot my computer as a fix. I need access to some sort of high up network support people that can comprehend the situation. But even then, if the client is no longer with Telus, how much help can they really provide? Are there some other Telus tech numbers I can call beside 310-TECH?

Has anybody else heard of issues like this? Is there something within Telus mail routing that interferes in this way? Is there anything I can do about it? And lastly, am I on the right track with this, or can somebody suggest another possible reason for the missing incoming email? Keep in mind the packet sniffer did NOT see any connection attempt when sending with smtp.telus.net as an outgoing server. Helllllpppppp!!!

[BC] Upgrading from 3 to 6 but now at 1.5

I asked to upgrade from 3 to 6 a few days ago. They said it would be done today, but today I now have 1.5. I call and they say it is because they are still processing it but they tech guy didn't sound very confident or knowledgable. Is it normal to be put back to 1.5 while they are processing it, or has something just gone wrong? Why reduce my speed from 3.0 at all?

[BC] Unlock Thomson speedtouch?

So I was recently encountering problems with my connection and it turned out my Linksys WRT54G was the problem. I reset the settings to their factory defaults and things seemed to be working fine. I noticed that my firmware was highly outdated so I downloaded the latest update and attempted to upgrade the firmware, only to have the router somehow mess it all up and render itself a piece of techno junk (I hope there's a fix).

I was forced to connect my modem directly to my PC and I figured that I may as well run some speed tests. Disappointing. I'm reaching 1591kbps downloading. My connection is a High Speed Extreme connection and I was used to 6XXXkbps. I've read posts where people have unlocked their speedtouch modems and had them running in ADSL1 mode or something like that and upload speeds (I'm at 806kbps at the moment) increased as well as reliability.

When I get a new router, I just want everything to work in harmony, and fast. Are there any recommendations or guides I should look at? Thank you in advance.

I ran another test before heading to bed;
