how accurate is the bandwidth usage info?

For example bell says their updates may be delayed by up to 60 hours on the website. I never tried calling bell so I don't know if calling would have been more accurate.

I'm with teksavvy now and calling is not a problem, but I would like to know exactly how much of a delay there is from the time that I download a file to when it shows on the screen of the guy answering my call.

Also, does anyone know of a good, free internet bandwidth usage tracker(i.e. don't count bandwidth used when i move files across my network). I don't want to install custom firmware on my router. Every program I've tried so far has crashed my computer(yes, I'm 96.4% sure it's due to this because nothing else has changed).

Blade servers

All right! Uber Geek Alert! In other words, I don't know where else to ask this question. :)

As some of you know, I'm working on launching a cable television channel later this year. The automated broadcast system for this channel will be entirely computer based, and the distribution will be for the most part IP based. The performance requirements for the system will not be too high, but I'll still need quite a bit of equipment, and at least 10 terabytes of hard drive space for the video files.

To make life easier, I'm considering getting a blade server package which will be installed at a datacenter. I figured I can squeeze everything I'll need for the next two years in a single IBM Bladecenter S chassis. Throw in a keyboard/monitor drawer, and I can fit everything in a 1/4 rack with 2U to spare.

The question is: are IBM Bladecenters reliable and cost effective these days? I'm having a lot of trouble finding ANY reviews on the product, including credible complaints!

I'm also checking out the offerings by HP and Dell, but haven't figured out if everything I'll need for the next two years will fit in that same 1/4 rack. If I have to upgrade to a 1/2 rack and extra power, the monthly co-location costs will double, possibly negating any potential cost savings achieved by going with a cheaper equipment provider (the equipment will be leased, not purchased).

So any opinions out there? Has anyone here worked with IBM Bladecenters or know someone who has worked with them? Was the experience on the whole positive or negative? And how was the cost, set-up and long term maintenance? Good or bad?

Thanks!

hello, I am attempting to switch from tsi's dns servers to peer1's.

However I am unable to locate the addresses and Peer1's chat team couldnt help me.

Does anyone know what the primary and secondary dns server addresses are for peer1? I know its probably not the right place to ask, but since im a teksavvy user, I figured I would post here.

Thanks for your help..

IPCop software\hardware issue

Not sure how many use IPCop as a linux router system but I am not sure if that's really my issue.
I run an IPCop box on so slightly older hardware. AMD Duron 900, 256mb DDR, 30Gb HDD. 2 x 10/100 NIC's
All has been pretty good for a year or so but all summer now it has been a major PITA.

Main Issue:
All PC's can't browse internet. Can send receive email, newsgroups, even play on Steam but surf? Nope.
Thought it was a DNS issue and have assigned TSI DNS within IPCop. Assigned OpenDNS in IPCop. Assign TSI or OpenDNS to each individual PC. Still sometimes can't surf sometimes.
If I reboot the router box all is well for minutes, hours or days.
I also disabled the DHCP function, disabled any add-on like Advanced Proxy and Proxy filter.

Side issue: router box seems to "freeze" with the HDD runnning for minutes at a time. Can't do anything in the Webclient while it's "processing". Maybe bad HDD?

Just looking for some direction.

Slow speeds in the evenings

Hey gang,

I'm trying to figure out what's going on. When I check our gear, I don't see any wide spread problems. Yet many are having problems.

Can everybody post some speed test results so we can try to figure this thing out please?

this sucks. (trying to subscribe)

I'm trying to recommend teksavvy to my friend who lives here in windsor. He lives in roughly the same area as me and I've had teksavvy service for the last several months. When we called however it seemed like the area has reached some kind of capacity or something.

I was thinking of maybe checking out bell to see if we can get their service, but considering Teksavvy is a bell reseller, wouldn't they give us the same answer pretty much since it's using their equipment?

Bell's Network Management practices page

It looks like Bell has complied with para. 62 of the CRTC's traffic management decision, which requires them to fully disclose the details of these practices.

http://internet.bell.ca/index.cfm?method=content.view&content_id=12119

While it's heavily spun to give the impression that a) it's perfectly normal, b) everybody's doing it, and c) it's good for you, at least it describes what they are doing. I found this section particularly interesting:

If you're using an application/protocol during peak periods, such as encrypted FTP and find that it cannot attain full speed, please first ensure that you are using the standard port assigned for the application/protocol in question (as per the IANA: http://www.iana.org/assignments/port-numbers).

If you cannot find the application/protocol listed in the IANA’s website or you’re not currently using the assigned port listed, it is possible that the application/protocol being used may be impacted by traffic management if you are using a P2P file sharing application at the same time.

To resolve this issue, please close the affected application and ensure that all P2P file sharing applications are also not running. When you turn back on the affected application, ensure you are using the standard port assigned and that no P2P file sharing applications are open at the same time.

Note: It may take up to 10 minutes after terminating the P2P applications before you restart the affected application to ensure the application is not affected by traffic management.

If the problem continues to exist after performing the above steps, please contact us by posting your problem here (registration required).

Does this practice comply with the CRTC's decision? Thoughts?

logging in twice

Hi I used to be able to log in twice with my ppp account. I would get ppp0 and ppp1. This is very useful to me because I could log in once on my VOIP router and using it as a bridge device log in again with my PC. the advantage is that when i do torrent I would not have to worry about the voip router being choked full from time to time.

However, i notice that with the new MLPPP account I am no longer able to create two PPP logins. is there a way to simply log in again?
