Smoothwall? M0n0wall? pfsense???

Since about 6 months, I've been trying to find a good, stable and safe hardware firewall.

I have a very good understanding of networking and I would live to have something that I can fine tune to my needs and that is also very secure.
The problem I found is that there is not a lot of these appliances in the sub 3-400$ marked and they all have a lot of features that I don't need.

I was really looking at the Netgear FVS338 that seemed good to me! The only thing I don't like about it is the fact that it is a proprietary thing, with limited support, limited updates and no good documentation.

And then, looking at what I have in my house, I came across an old motherboard, cpu and power supply.
That's when I thought about installing something like smoothwall on it.

Now, my "question" is... What is the best and most easy to use firewall/operating system ??? It seems to me like smoothwall is a good choice...
I HAVE NO... BUT I MEAN NO EXPERIENCE AT ALL IN THE LINUX WORLD. I don't even have a lot of experience in operating system design. I sort of know windows and mac os but that's it.
As I said, I know a LOT about the theory of networking, but not how it is implemented in operating systems.

Do I need to have such experience in order to use smoothwall???

Will I have more support and docs with such a product??

Are there frequent updates??? Are the security flaws (if there is any) fixed faster than with commercial products?

Can I really put my trust in it?? Is it stable??

I think that's all with my questions...

Thanks for your help

MLPPP bonding on a WRT54GL router in front of a Cisco 1841

I watched the video detailing how to bond two DSL lines on a Linksys on this thread http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r22638014-MLPPP-bonding-howto-video and it seems almost too easy.

We have a Cisco 1841 that is currently being used for our T1 that will be replaced by two DSL lines next week. I can't find any good info on how to make use of the Cisco to bond two DSL lines so I am wondering if I can place the Cisco downstream from the Linksys. The idea being that the Linksys does the bonding and the Cisco does whatever else it does (not even sure if I need it. Maybe it will end up on eBay.)

Obviously I think the Cisco was overkill and we never would have bought it except that it came by way of a hosted VoIP solution which we are going to cancel and bring in-house using Asterisk.

I appreciate any advice and if anyone is in Seattle or can recommend someone here I am certainly in the market for a free-lance network guy.

[Connection Sharing] Using a router for ethernet hub only

I currently have my place pre-wired for internet. In my media room I only have one Ethernet outlet in my media room. My objective is to split the signal downstairs with hard wire to my ps3, pc, and xbox 360. I have an extra linksys router sitting around.

Am i able to my pre-wire ethernet cable in my media room to my extra router to split the signal or am I needing another ethernet hub to do this

Thank you

local traffic is being blocked

i've been ignoring this problem for months now but i'm now getting very annoyed by this so i started looking into it

it all started when i flashed my wrt54gl router with a tomato firmware, so my first guess is a bad router config, but i can't seem to figure it out

all the local traffic passed within my lan is blocked by something. can't ping lan pc, can't use vnc, can't use utorrent webui (using local ip), can't ssh to local pc, can even use win filesharing

the only way i got one of them to work (only tried on ssh), was to setup port forwarding for both local machines involved. and since i'm using dhcp, wireless connections, and like 5+ computers on my lan (only one has static ip), setting up port forwarding for each one is gonna be a pain

any suggestions? thanks

Take it as test are you great network engineer, urgent help

This is the plan. and if you can help in this you are the best.

Main Office
My plan is to use a Cisco 2811 router with 3 Ethernet interfaces. 1st Ethernet port connects to Layer 3 Cisco 3560 switch that it has 2 VLANs . VLAN2(172.20.0.0),VLAN3 (172.10.0.0) and 2nd Ethernet connects to WAN via CPE router(10.4.1.0) and then have the 3rd interface connect to my cable modem ISP (77.42.246.0). Simple right, that what I thought first.
I wanted clients on VLAN 2 to be able to go on the internet and be able to talk to clients on the other VLANs. And VLAN 3 should only have access to the internet.
Branch office
Router is 2621, with 3 FE interfaces LAN, WAN , DSL. VLAN 2 can access main office and internet , VLAN 3 can only access the internet
In each site currently I have the following:

Branch Office

 172.21.1.0 &172.11.1.0
LAN –L2 Cisco switch 2960==========	VLAN 2, VLAN 3

LAN L3 Cisco switch 3650 = VLAN 2 172.20.1.0, VLAN 3 172.10.1.0

Note:
•	Each location will have its own DSL to connect to the internet
•	VLAN 2 can talk to WAN, MAIN office servers and internet
•	VLAN 3 can only talk to internet cannot talk to WAN or VLAN 2

Please what is the best way to configure this anyone have configuration idea or help me in configuration of the router switch and Firewall. do i need routing statement on the DSL router to be able to access the internet since we using static everywhere.

How the ASA 5505 should be setup to have traffic from all VLAN access the internet (NAT, Access list.. )

Your help in this matter is highly appreciated.

Using OTS equipment to extend "The Last Mile" to your ISP

After thinking about this for over a year. My original plan was to extend the ISP's "The Last Mile" by means of a directional antenna (a Dish, Cantenna, etc) and a pair of DD-WRT (or OpenWRT) compatible routers so people who are less than a few miles can get broadband by means of a friend who can get it or working with the ISP to extend it using the customer's equipment.

I've tried this with a pair of WRT54G's with success (running DD-WRT), and even with a pair of old ActionTec GT-701WG's (running OpenWRT).

Are there any other success stories out there?

ATT Help

Yes, I have read all over the place on how to do this(your forums included), and my next step is to call AT&T Tech Support to get this resolved.

ISP : AT&T RES DSL
ADSL Modem : Motorola 2210
Wireless : Linksys WRT54GL / DD-WRT

I just started my DSL service with AT&T and I am having a few problems, poking around in the 2210 interface I have disabled the firewall, enabled uPnP(i need media streaming, but it seems it doesnt even work when enabled on 2210 and WRT54GL anyways) and it is still on a PPPoE connection right now. I would like to switch it over to a Bridged connection and let the DD-WRT handle the PPPoE side of things. Problems arose : Changing to Bridged and PPPoE on WRT54GL I cannot get it to connect to the DSL service using my username and password, thoughts? Also when leaving the 2210 in PPPoE mode(even directly connecting to it without the WRT54GL, no ports seem to be open, firewall is off??) setting my Computers MAC as static IP and trying to set myself in the DMZ provides no results. I see there is a NAT/Gaming section on the 2210 but I want the WRT54GL to do all of that work and not the 2210. The 2210, I just need to act in dumb mode so the wireless router can do everything else, Any suggestions to my problems? I have read many many tutorials on how to do this and it does not work.

works w/o port forwarding...

I just installed uTorrent on my laptop...

and I imagined I would need to forward some ports to in in the router... but it says that

quote:Network OK
Your network connection is working as it should

just wondering? doesn't uTorrent ask for a port to use and requires it to be forwarded to the machine?

[XP] TCP/IP Properties, Alternate Configuration

Hi:
What can you actually do with this in TCP/IP Settings??

If I assign a static IP to the Network card I can then go to advanced bitton and add more IPs of different subnets to the network card, and they work. But if I have, under General with TCP/IP Properties, obtain an IP address automatically and then got to 'Alternate Configuration' and add a static IP address in a different subnet, it is not working. Working defined as the ability to ping other resource with the 'Alternate Config's subnet.

What I would like to do is have it under General 'Obtain and IP' and assign another IP is a different Subnet with the 'Alternate Config' and have that one work also.

Input please??
