EDGE is 384 not 144.

144 is 1xRTT.

Furthermore, you should go out and get some lame phone and put a $20 MediaNet unliited plan on it, then pop that SIM out and pop it in your Blackjack, then you can have bluetooth HSDPA tethering for $20 a month instead of the $80 you are paying.

Re: EDGE is 384 not 144.

EDGE is 144 on Cingular. While 384 is theoretical, this requires all 8 timeslots. I've never gotten above 130 on Cingular with my aircards (I've had three of them) or my phones. Cingular uses only four timeslots... Cingular advertises 75-135kbps (»www.cingular.com/learn/why/techn···edge.jsp).

Cheap phones don't have an external antenna port for my company car. That's a big deal when you're way out in a rural area, desperately trying for some EDGE coverage. It's worth the $80 to have a real aircard and better coverage in rural areas.

no, even 4 slots give you 236k. You see those results on your various tests because of latency issues. I've seen 180k on my 8125 which is about right for 384k after you take out latency and TCP overhead.

His experience matchs mine

In non 3g areas Baltimore suburbs and Virginia Mountains, I have only been getting near 100 Kbps. In 3 G areas Phoenix AZ it flies >1 Mbps. The rate has actually dropped to 10 Kbps when driving between towers. The actual rate is not nearly as consistent as my DSL or Cable connection.
