question about your service

Hello,

There could be a number of issues, but first things first. Are you on a wireless network with whatever your
downloading with? Second, what kind of modem or modem/router are you using. Third, do you have an alarm system. Once you answer these questions i can probably help you out from there. Look forward to hearing back from you.

Re: question about your service

I do have a wireless router, but the computer I am downloading on is wired. I've never really tried to download anything on my wireless connection, I just use that to surf and check e-mail.

I've had the problem with three different wireless routers, the first was a Linksys BEFW11S4, I replaced that with a D-Link DI524 just to get wireless "g" speed. I replaced it, because it just suddenly decided to stop working, with a Netgear WGR614v6.

The DSL "modem" is a Speedstream 4100

The house does have an alarm, but it, and all my DirecTV boxes, are connected to my Fax line, my main line carries the DSL.

There, I think I got 'em all.

Re: question about your service

One more thing....

The wireless router handles the PPPoE. I had some problems with the SBC software, and will not install it on any of my computers. The computer that had the SBC software on it has been reformatted and Windows reloaded. If you really need me to, I think I can come up with a "sacrificial lamb" computer to load the SBC software on.

Re: question about your service

You dont need to load any sbc software. And I would rather let the dsl modem handle the PPPOE connection, not the router.

Re: question about your service

It's still doing it, although it has gotten better, it no longer stalls.

I've been making some observations, when the download first starts, I get a burst of really high speed, then it makes a rapid decrease in about the first 10 seconds, then it will slowly decrease for the rest of the download.

The AT&T techs say that the initial burst is normal.

I've found that if I pause the download for a second or two the speed will increase, and then, almost immediately, start to slowly decrease again.

I've never run into anything like this before, its done it with several different routers, and 2 different computers.

Re: question about your service

The lights on the modem are as follows:

Power - Green
Ethernet - Green
DSL - Green
Internet - Off*
Activity - Flashes Green

* Every once and a while, the Internet LED will turn Green and flash at a steady rate, but mostly, it's off. It's off as I type this.

Re: question about your service

I'm using two different(?) operating systems when I download, Win XP Home, and Win XP Pro x64. Normally, I use the x64 computer more than the other. (That one is mine, the Home machine is for everyone else)

Before you ask, the Win XP Pro x64 operating system came bundled free with the motherboard/processor I bought.

Re: question about your service

did the equipment that was bundled with winxp pro also have anti virus software like Norton or MaCafee and if so is the windows firewall off???

On your modem, because your using a router which is most likely in bridge mode the internet light will not be on thats the modem's normal state for bridge mode use. Your router most does you authentication when connecting to the net.

Re: question about your service

No, there was no anti-virus software with it, just an OEM copy of Windows XP Pro x64. Frankly, I think the dealer had a bunch of copies of it, and a lot of "old" 64 bit hardware, and saw this as a way to get rid of both of them.

I do have Avast! Antivirus running on it, and the Windows firewall is running with it's default settings. I probably could turn off the Windows firewall since the Netgear router has a firewall built into it.

The one thing is that the other computer had the exact same problem, and it was running the "standard" copy of Windows XP Pro.

I set up the router to do the authentication for the net, I'm told that there is a way to have the modem do it, but I never checked into how to do it.

YOU WROTE:Windows firewall is running & YES turn off the Windows firewall since the Netgear router has a firewall built into it. Otherwise you will get conflicts where the dsl connection will go down repeatedly, Windows Firewall is part of you OS it will always take priority and will cause the connection to fail.
