Response for Tzale

"Had Optimum Online since December 2001. When I first got it the service was capped at 10mbps down / 1 mbps up. A year or two ago they started capping people who dared to use the upload bandwidth. Luckily I never had a problem with this, but each time I upload I am afraid I'll be capped and be forced to plead with their "security department."

Within the last week Optimum Online has begun DOWNLOAD capping. If you download a file for over an unknown amount of time (10-20 minutes reported in forum) your download bandwidth is capped from 10mbps to 3mbps for a few minutes. Unlike the upload bandwidth, your download wil return to normal later, however the problem is that Optimum Online just began advertising they are 3X faster then before (I get the same speed I always get) but the truth is that if you dare download a large file over a few minutes you will be throttled and forced to use only 3mbps of bandwidth. I don't think this is worth the $45.95/month I pay per month. If you have DSL available go for it. There are no imaginary bandwidth caps, you're ALLOWED to use the bandwidth liberally and the services actually work.

Optimum Online has HORRIBLE mail service, HORRIBLE news service and their DNS service has been failing for the last week or two, and Optimum Online will not fix it. They tell everyone it is their own fault. If you go to the Optimum Online forum at the time of this review you will see what I am talking about.

I will be switching to Verizon FIOS when it becomes available in a year or so in my area. FTTP (Fiber to the Premise) is a promising technology that will provide 15 mbps / 2mbps which Verizon ENCOURAGES you to use for only $44.95/month.

Verizon offers 3mbps / 768 kbps with no limits for $29.95/month. This IMHO is a lot better of a deal compared to Optimum Online which will cap you to 3mbps / 150kbps from the 10mbps / 1mbps if you use the bandwidth at a price of $44.95/month.

I am not satisfied with Optimum Online anymore, I can't wait till my day as a customer of Cablevision is over. Their digital TV sucks, their broadband sucks and their digital phone sucks."

Just a couple of things I need to ask you. WHO told you that OOL caps DOWNLOADS? So far as capping your uploads go, what are you uploading to? If you're simply ULing thru email no problems. If you're uploading to a person using IRC or some sort of FTP server, guess what? They have every Right to cap you as that is against the terms of service. You didn't mention the digital TV or Phone other than to say that their service sucks. What sucks about THOSE services?

Re: Response for Tzale

OOL lately has been terrible. They deny any DNS problems every time I call and read from their Cablevision 101 script....unplug the modem, wait for 1 minute, restart computer, etc, etc, ad nauseum. They then blame me for the problem, implying that I don't know what I am doing. Would be nice if their front end people had more customer service skills; they are very confrontational and defensive. As far as speed is concerned, I'm no network expert, but it is noticeably sloooooower than it used to be. No numbers, no fancy terms, but it is much, much slower than it was. That said, Verizon Fios is almost here (few weeks) and it's goodbye OOL; and as soon as they offer cable service, it's goodbye IO. Cablevision had the golden goose in the most prosperous franchise in the country and they bled it to death with their greed and abuse of monopolistic power. They don't give 2 hoots about their customers.

I'm reviewing Optimum Online NOT iO Digital TV or Optimum Voice, I simply put my opinion on here. Don't like it? Adios.....

As far as downloading are you crazy? Go check the OOL forum, the situation has RESOLVED itself but I'm not taking it off the bad features list just yet because you never know when it will show again. The upload capping can be done, I never aid it was WRONG of OOL to cap us, but what I have a problem with is that it is UNETHICAL to CAP someone and NOT tell them and then charge them the SAME PRICE......
