nice

congrats on your service. if your getting above 1500/384 its because you qualified for the 3000/768 service. there is no way that you would get those speeds if your line was set at 1500/384. post in the tweak forum to see if you can tweak your line and post in the verizon forum to see how you can get the most out of your line

Re: nice

You should try Verizon only $30/month and speeds are 3000/768 now. I get around 2780/680 on speed tests. Its great!

Verizon over-provisions their 1500/384 service at 1792/448. That way you can reach their advertised speed.

Actually, Verizon over-provisions service at 1700/400 or something around there.

Opimum Online SUCKS

Optimum Online is much faster than Verizon DSL

The reviewer says that when browsing the web he saw no difference. Yes, webpages do not need a lot of speed to load quickly. He also said that downloading large files may take a bit longer. NOT TRUE. They would take MUCH longer.

Optimum Online: Speed is easily 1.2 mB/sec from fast servers. (Sometimes you may have to use more than one socket for this speed). Average speed is about 500 kB/sec. Upstream the speed is capped at 128 kB/sec. Downloading a 100 megabyte movie trailer from DiVX was running at around 1 mB/sec and took me about 2 minutes.

Verizon: A friend got it in his business this month. Speed was no more than 175 kB/sec downstream. Downloading the movie trailer took about 10 minutes.

And the WORST part of it--I downloaded the trailer 4 times! Why? the first 3 downloads had a bad CRC in the zip file! I don't know why this was, but on Optimum Online I never had such a problem in the more than 2 years I've been using it. Could it have something to do with the DSL?

I would never trade my OOL for DSL. Even at almost twice the price it's worth it. When I can download a GIGABYTE in about 10 minutes vs. DSL which would take almost an hour, (not to mention the strange corruption), and I have a guaranteed 128 kB/sec upstream (DSL is probably maxes at about 20 kB/sec). Then why would I want DSL?

But also the reviewer didn't take into account that for DSL you need a phone line at almost $20 a month, so add that in and it costs as much or more than OOL. I just got SunRocket for my phone and am going to discontinue my Verizon POTS. Who needs it? If Verizon gets it's act together for once in 100 years and decided to finally bring fiber optics into the home, I'll check up on what they are offering once again...

Re: Optimum Online is much faster than Verizon DSL

Please let me clarify the speeds: You are all talking about 1536/384 speeds in kb/sec. I was talking about kB/sec. So to translate, Optimum Online is about 11,000/1,280 kb/sec. About 10 TIMES the speed!

To conclude, unless you are downloading a lot, and are just browsing the web, the difference in speed is minimal. And don't forget to calculate the cost of the Verizon POTS line necessary for the DSL line. $20+$30=$50 at least if you make no calls. To cable you can add a VoIP service for less than $20/mo and make unlimited calls. Quality is usually better than the POTS.

Re: Optimum Online is much faster than Verizon DSL

actually your friend may have 1536 kbps downstream, but if your line is good enough u get 3008kbps, like i do. Now that's still less then OOL, i don't disagree. I just wanted to correct u on that one.

TekWiz

@optonline.net

Re: Optimum Online is much faster than Verizon DSL

I thought that Verizon sells the faster speeds at a higher price. 3008 kbps is like 300 kB/s which is not too shabby. In fact, my friend who has Comcast cable only manages 350 kB/s! His upstream is a measly 30 kB/s (used to be 15 I think). So in that case the Verizon DSL may be better or the same. Well particularly because he never got a great signal--had lots of problems in the beginning and I upgraded his inside cable run, and then it was better.

My cable company used to say they were like 3 times faster than DSL, (for me they were around 15x faster when DSL was about 650 kb/s, and I had the 10,000 kb/s) but now when Verizon advertises higher speeds, they now say they are 10,000+ kb/s, and show DSL as being about 1,500 kb/s, and say that now they have even higher speeds. I suppose they upgraded the cables in more areas or something...

Re: Optimum Online is much faster than Verizon DSL

OOL's capping policy makes them BT-unfriendly. I seldom download windows updates, lunix binaries, or movie trailers from dedicated servers, so OOL's speed only helped me minimally...

but I know the sheer amount of hours i spent waiting for OOL to call me back at like 10 PM to uncap me, and then to deal with them on the phone...that was alot more aggrevation in waiting than waiting a few more minutes to download stuff. Lets not forget the amount of aggrevation and angst im saving having to fiddle with NetLimiter, or get up every hour in middle of night to stop my uploading...and im SURE there are long threads in the DSLR forums about people finding the "Sweet" spot in NEtLimiter to leave it.

Id much rather save $20 a month and leave my UL on all the time and be a good seeder ^_^ I also did not qualify for the 3000/768 package because of distance limitations, but I am rather content with my 1732/416 provisioned DSL line fro mVOL...I do admit, their tech support is incompetant...but thats what Presidential Appeals is for!

Verizon fios which is a new type of internet service offers faster speeds than optimum Online. Not Dsl. verizon dsl offers two different kinds of speed service. The 1500kb and the 3000kbps(3Mbps). Optimum Online offers speed Bandwidth at 10,000kbps that has to be shared with other cable internet users in your neighborhood so as a result users always get capped for uploading and then thats when connection becomes unstable. Verizon Fios offers the fastest and most powerful internet ever. Their Fiber network speeds up to 30,000kbps. Thats 3x faster than optimum Online. I know you all want fiber. Everyone is waiting for Fiber.

Don't even start with me

I am total ANTI-Cablevision and will never use them. I mean 50 bucks a month for internet service?? Thats insane! I refuse to pay that when I can pay only 30 dollars a month. Plus I don't feel like getting capped for uploading. And I don't spend my time downloading 100MB+ files so I don't need a super high speed. Plus Verizon's unlimited calling package is great. I wil soon be getting their VOIP for only 35 bucks a month(same as OV). So please don't even start with me on OOL. I will never use them, EVER! I refuse too!

Re: Optimum Online is much faster than Verizon DSL

I switched from OOL to Verizon DSL and it's the smartest move in broadband I ever made. The speed is plenty fast for my use of the 'Net, my connection is more reliable than it was with OOL, and email and newsgroups work great. (OOL's newsgroups are less than worthless.) Plus Verizon provides web space. And to top it off, I'm saving $150 per year.

Verizon ... bad in so many ways

Three days ago, Verizon DSL had an outage. A recording from telephone support said so. Again, for the last 24 hours, pages have been loading slowly, uploads timed out, and I noticed a brief, complete outage. No response from my email to Verizon after several hours. I've seen periodic disconnects in the past too.

Verizon blocked all email coming from Europe and some other locations without notifying anyone, including business customers. They're currently being sued for it. You must first notice the problem, then complain, then you're told that you could compile a list of people from those blocked areas whose email you want to allow, and Verizon will white-list them. INSANE!

Three sales calls within the last two or three weeks. One of the live sales people told me that there is no way to get off the list since I'm a customer. That's incorrect. I received an email prior to one of the sales calls telling me that I've been added to the Do Not Solicit list effective immediately. That was incorrect. Verizon has such a list, but it takes 30 days before you'll stop receiving sales calls. That's the same amount of time that telemarketers who don't have a business relationship with you have. A customer should be treated better.

Someone mentioned that Cablevision's Optimum Online costs $50 per month. That's only after the first six months, and only if you don't have their cable TV. I'm getting Optimum Online.

...Almost forgot, one of the sales calls was a recording that promised faster service for no extra charge. I pressed the button to speak to someone, and it wasn't so. Another sales call was in the typical sleazy telemarketer style--I picked up the phone and had to wait through about 30 seconds of silence before I heard someone pick up. Again, not how a customer should be treated.

Re: Verizon ... bad in so many ways

Well, I don't use Verizon Email Service Anyway. But don't get OOL. That won't solve anything. OOL is that absolute WORST internet connection on the planet. 45-50 bucks a month for service and they cap you for doing a little uploading. Screw Cablevision.

Update: there was still no reply from Verizon about the slowness over 24 hours after my email to support, but it seems to be fixed.

I read "Update: 1/9/05" at »Review of Verizon Online DSL by Nymostwanted which says "Many people in the NYC areas have been experiencing slow downs" An update from over one month later says it's been fixed, so the slow downs lasted longer than I thought. Scroll down on that same page to johnnylakis's post and you'll see "'Many people in the NYC areas have been experiencing slow downs!' Yes but when you call Verizon, they deny it " Those posts are from people in my area (NYC).

By the way, what's up with Verizon telling me to turn off my firewall? When I first got Verizon DSL, I tried configuring my computer to connect without Verizon's software because I didn't have enough memory for it and I didn't want an extra item in my task bar. I called support for help, and they told how to do it, but they also told me to turn off my firewall. I've asked some people about that, and they all said I could have it on, so I turned it back on and everything works fine (except for outages that I have no control over).

Sorry, I don't remember why, and I don't know how to go back to your review. I seem to have started my own thread, sort of. Maybe I should have started my own review.

I have verizon dsl too and I'm enjoying it

Congratulation on your service with verizon, I have verizon too and I'm already making the most out of verizon. Especially with free msn premium. The main reason I like verizon is because it comes with msn premium with no charge. I'm enjoying everything about msn.

Re: I have verizon dsl too and I'm enjoying it

Glad to hear it. I tried the MSN software, but didn't really like it because it was slower than opera. But my parents like to use it because its simplified and like the AOL we used to have. I just use Opera instead.

congrats

Congrats. i am happy for you though most people who download more than you do, will probably tell you that 3 megs is too slow. That's why I chose optimum. Its faster, in my case more reliable( i never had an outage). Though I pay 50% more , my speed is 3x times your speed. My speed never fell since I only use full speed periodically, but I am happy that to download something I will spend at least 1/3 time less than you will.

Re: congrats

Screw you man. Ypu pay 44.95 when I pay 29.95, and guess what, I can't get capped! Atleast I can upload for as long as I want at full speed with no interruption. I can't wait until you get capped or throttled or something just so I can laugh. And when I get fios I will laugh at you even more! So shuv it!

Let me know when you pay $29.95/month or less for your OOL. 3Mbps is enough for me, I don't get capped, and it's cheap.
