Datapacket.net still bad in 2004

Stay away from datapacket.net. Check the BBB of Florida and maybe even Texas. The company changes hands, names and re-invents itself all the time. Service sucks and uptime is a joke. Sure they will be cool to you for the first week and get the sale done to get your money. After that, good luck. Its like handing a credit card to a stranger. View the legal agreement too, you are resposible for anything and everything, not datapacket. Run Run Run as fast as you can from datapacket.net. They would not even answer emails about the status of my cancellation (after only 5 months of my 1 year service) paid. It was better to take a loss than do business with them. Don't let all the bogus features fool you, they aren't available half the time anyway and when they are, it changes every week.

An instructive story

Here is my story with datapack.net
About 3 weeks ago my site suddenly went down. The online operator informed me that they changed their network and directed me to sales@datapacket.net. I sent a mail asking to make the site online. When I saw that they wouldn’t answer I contacted again the operator. This time he directed me to the big boss (Brian Bennett) bbennett@datapacket.net. I sent a mail again to both of these addresses and also dropped a ticket for the support team. Mr. Bennett seemed to be too busy spending our money since he was not going to do anything to solve the problem. I couldn’t do anything only to invade them with mails. I think I sent at least 100 mails and dropped some a dozen of tickets when after 10 days Mr. Bennett answered me, asking the payment transaction ID. In that very day I sent it to him, and to everybody who has an email address ending with @datapacket.net. Since then I am sending to them 3-5 mails/day with the details they asked to make my site back. My site is still offline, nobody is working there (the online operator is also not working for more than a week).
I have also dropped the following tickets: KHT-46557, JAM-18208, SRI-75962, LLM-22865, XBM-38898, XSZ-85503, NRV-38486.
In the first days I was very angry, I was afraid that I would loose my clients. Now I lost them all and so I lost some money too.
If you need a hosting server, avoid Datapacket.net, it is a thief gang. They will steal your money and won’t do the service you paid them.

DataPacket.net

I can attest to the comments of a bad rep for datapacket.net. Their service is so poor that I couldn't even sign up with them/him - luckily for me. As stated by others, no reponse to mails. Phone calls were a joke - the answering person didn't even claim to know that they offered web hosting. Here is a copy of the online chat I had with "Brian" - no title provided, btw...

You're connected to operator - DataPacket

DataPacket: Thank you for contacting DataPacket.NET! How can we help you?

Jon Elinsky: Well, I've tried many times at this point to get some information about hosting from someone there and have received no response whatsoever....

DataPacket: Hello Jon, How can I help you?

Jon Elinsky: Here are the initial questions I had sent regarding your reseller hosting packages:

Jon Elinsky:

Jon Elinsky: Hello. I am a freelance web developer. I like to offer hosting, email, ftp, etc. services to my clients. I had some questions... What would be involved in up or downgrading from the various reseller plans you offer? Is the price locked in as long as I am a customer. (I ask because I recently had been signed up with another company who, without any notice, just decided to almost raise their price by 60%) What would be the time required to get up and running and have hosted sites up and running? How do you handle domain reg/transfer?

DataPacket: Jon, please enter your questions one at a time.

Jon Elinsky: Are you a computer or a person?

DataPacket: A person.

Jon Elinsky: You don't sound like one...

DataPacket: LOL.

Jon Elinsky: Well, my main concern is that I've tried so diligently to get some response from you guys and was ignored. I can not accept that kind of treatment as a hosting reseller customer.

Jon Elinsky: In the case of support issues especially, respone time is critical...

DataPacket: Jon, we are advanced hosting provider. You must have extensive knowledge to be able to host with us. We only respond to our market customers. Asking us how to transfer a domain for exmaple.

DataPacket: As a reseller you should know you just update the dns.

DataPacket: I dont mean to turn you off, but again we dont provide that type of support or help.

Jon Elinsky: Well, that WAS kind of insulting... As you should be aware, there are MANY companies out there that are nothing more than money-grabbing scams. My questions were mostly designed to judge your response. And as I said, your response was to ignore me and now to insult me and tell me that my knowledge is insufficient to warrant your business.

Jon Elinsky: Your site claims providing excellent quality services and the best customer service in the hosting industry - but that doesn't seem to be the case.

DataPacket: We understand some questions just come in to test us.

DataPacket: You are not a customer so how could you know that.

Jon Elinsky: When I called your "sales" phone number the woman who answer didn't even know you offered web hosting.

DataPacket: I'm just telling you how we work.

DataPacket: We use an answering service to screen pre-sales.

Jon Elinsky: Why would that be? Also, she could not give me a sales phone number, so I left (another) message and received no response again.

Jon Elinsky: How do you get customers?

DataPacket: Word of mouth.

Jon Elinsky: I guess I won't be one of your preferred advertisers... What is your name and position?

DataPacket: Jon, my name is Brian.

DataPacket: Can I help you with anything else today?

Jon Elinsky: No thanks.

Good!!

Datapacket has been very good for me for the past five months. One time my email stopped working but I found out it was actually an issue with my ISP blocking some port. Datapacket told me how to fix it and it worked well! ^_^

Horrible host

I run a company that does web work for reale state agents. I purchased a reseller account from datapacket to host my clients sites. Since I signed up I have recieved a huge amount of downtime despite the 99.9 gaurantee. In addition they recently had a server crash, resulting in a very long down time. The end result was that all of my clients site files for two of the sites I was hosting were lost. My coompany site came back fine so I did not think there could be to much problem. My clients continued to call one after another asking why thier site was not up. Come to find out all files were lost, datapacket knew about this and didnt even tell me. So much for the claim that they offer daily file back up. Also, the customer service is terrible. They claim to offer 24/7 support. Far from true. It is typically to wait ours after submitting a trouble ticket. They also advertise a 1-800 number. If you call this you might get lucky and be able to leave a message but more than likely wit will ring a couple times and disconect you. I have called at least 100 times and have never spoken to anyone. In the long run they have cost me a lot of money and have caused my clients to go to a different company or to loose trust in me. I absolutely hate datapacket. I could go on and on about the technical problems I have had with them and thier lack of tech knowledge but I am sick of complaining about them and need to focus more time on finding my new host!

@xpinternet.net

very good

i have been with them for a little less than 2 years and overall the service and support has been quite good. there has been some minor bumps with the service but they are uncommon. i simply have not found a better value. i have never seen them offer a daily backup service, so i don't know what the poster above me is talking about, but i make my own backups anyway so i never have to worry.

My review

I've been with them for only 2 months but so far, so good! I recommended them to a friend and they also have no problems.

A shambles

Whatever you do, I urge you to avoid Datapacket like the plague. Their hosting features are okay (and certainly cheap, but as I will explain you definately get what you pay for), but their customer service and reliability are appalling.

I started hosting my site with them in November 2003 and things seemed okay for about six weeks. However, my site went down for three days in December due to Datapacket's incompetence with database management. It then went down again in early January, this time for FOUR days. Datapacket claimed it was a Sprint router outage, which was completely untrue because I contacted Sprint and they had no record of an outage. Besides, router outages tend to last for a few hours at most, not FOUR days.

In late January 2004 my database apparently vanished from their server. I submitted a message to their "help desk" - it took them two days to get back to me, but that was better than the week it took them to get back to me the time before. I found, tucked away in their Web site, a little note that SQL Server was being discontinued from February 1 on their servers. Of course, they hadn't bothered to notify any of their customers about this. The message conveniently disappeared later in the day.

Datapacket used to trade under the name "BriNet" and they have had numerous complaints made against them with the Florida Better Business Bureau, a step I intend to take also.

Steer clear of Datapacket - they change their policies and guidelines on a whim and their customer service is next to non-existant. Don't bother trying to call them - all you will get is a voicemail message. The truth is that Datapacket appears to be one guy (Brian Bennett) running an inept, unreliable, and bordering on illegal hosting service from his mom's garage. Their site might look professional but, trust me, their service is not.
