Pair Gain

What an inane name for a device that takes fiber/T-1 and splits them out...

Why not just say a Concentrator.. Like they did in the old days...

Re: Pair Gain

Actually, it probably isn't a concentrator. Most pair gain systems provide a time slot in the T1/Fiber 100% of the time, so dial tone is available 100% of the time. The old concentrators had, essentially, time slot sharing, for example if there were 50 time slots available and 100 customers assigned, if all 50 time slots were in use and the 51st person tried to use the phone, the result would be no dial tone.

Re: Pair Gain

That's pretty funny. An engineering dept. expert Alfred at SBC once informed me that DAML or pair gain is not compatible with Earthlink / Covad defective equipment, but that it is a perfectly good solution for SBC/Yahoo DSL.
And that is the engineering dept, just imagine what the rest is like.

Re: Pair Gain

Depends, when pair gain was originally introduced, the thought of DSL at the time was just a pipe dream. No one, and probably not even Edward Wittachre (sp?) probably knew at the time DSL and broadband would be the next best thing to sliced bread... If you would have asked me if I could get 1536/384 speeds at my house I would have told you " Ok how many ISDN/or T1's are we using??" at the time when DSL was not even thought of. Back in 1999 when I was working for a small audio visual company, I was attempting to make a video conference unit work with Six ISDN lines and costing my employer the better part of $400/month for those. From what I hear on the back side of the fence there are plans to enable those units with a bit of upgrading and change of cards for DSL capability right out of the old POTS remote switches will it be today, probably not. Tomorrow, very good chance. I look forward to one day where we all can move to an address and have a list of providers to choose from, everyone wants that. Just like the cell phone companies, at first just a few and the coverage was bad. Now look at the industry today, many cell providers and number portability. So the pipe dreams are there.... we all just have to dream..

There are so many types of multiplexing used some are old and some are new. The older ones (DAML, old SLC)can barely support dial up where as the newer ones (DPG/Fiber Remote Terminals RTs) support higher speed DSL. And a few in between. DSL is a new technology it will take a while before ALL the kinks are worked out for everyone...especially for the people living in HOOTERVILLE....pray for an RT.

Re: Pair Gain

Hortonville aka Hooterville is in the works as we speak, I would not be surprised if there will be customers provisioned out of it by March. Keep an eye on Ameritech forum as it is the first and sure place to know about newly deployed areas.

Pair Gain systems come in many different packages. Pair Gain is a generic term that was introduced in the 1970s to generally cover a product area that offered a way to use one pair for many POTS customers. The term has been applied to system currently being deployed that are far more capable and complex. Fiber is not always used to serve Pair Gain system.

SBC will use the most cost effective method of transport media to get service to a area that is starved for copper pairs.
