We are here to help.

I read your complaints and I can imagine the frustration you have.

•If your interested in our TOS they can be found online in writing »sbc.yahoo.com/terms/

• About your order. Basically we cannot place an order for DSL until your POTS order has cleared. The ETF about moving is generally true. Usually they don't hold it against you if you want to continue but cannot because it is not serviced by SBC.

• Your billing sounds like it was a mess, did they get it all resolved?

• Your newsgroup problem, there is not much I can do about it. There are no plans to update the servers for increased performance.

• About spam, since your so enthusiastic, if you want, IM me your number and I will forward your info to Policy so they can discuss your concerns with them.

• If your having any other issues, or if I overlooked one, please let me know.

Thanks,

Rick

Re: We are here to help.

Thanks for the reply and the sympathy dealing with this mess.

I'm aware of »sbc.yahoo.com/terms/, but it says nothing about a $50 fee that I specifically asked about.

The abuse issue has been discussed at length in this thread:
»[General] Hey SBC Techs, what's with abuse@pacbell.net?.
Hopefully some folks at SBC understand the spam problem better, in terms of scope and solutions.

I still have yet to see all the billing problems resolved.

The spam problem seems to be getting worse.

IM'd to Rick:
415-xxx-xxx Hopefully, I've begun to explain that there are things that SBC can and should do that it isn't doing. It should not provide services that facilitate spammers, and there are effective and cost-efficient ways to avoid doing so. Spam is a complicated problem, that SBC couldn't solve on its own if it wanted to. But it's tractable; I'm not suggesting you do something about people who forge email from pacbell.net addresses, or anything that isn't well thought out. There's bad advice for fighting spam, but there's good, effective advice too.

What was the issue?

said by elvey:
Yahoo and SBC support ping-ponged me back and forth about who was responsible when I tried to get them to fix a bug in their mail system. (Yes, it really was a bug, by any reasonable definition; SBC level 2 eventually (after 10 phone calls back and forth) asked Yahoo level 2 to look into it, and they said a few weeks later that they'd fixed it, but they hadn't.)
So what was the issue.

Re: SBCSYKESGone

This guy is full of it. Only thing going over seas is tier one, and not all of it. 80% of first tier will be offshore, in india, philipines and costa rica and most likley, it will be back in a few years after the contract with Accenture expires.

Blacklisting

Bizarrely and annoyingly (considering it does not stop the deluge of spam you will receive at all) SBC also blacklist their own domains sometimes. As well as Yahoo, Yahoogroups, Hotmail and other popular (and popularly abused) domains.

Ask CS about it and be prepared to receive ignorance and/or lies in response.

If you don't care about having a reliable email account or are satisfied with using a third party, use SBC. If you want reliable e-mail I & O stay as far away as possible, you won't get it.

Supporting evidence re. SBC malfeasance & attitude

»www.isp-planet.com/politics/2004···lla.html has a bunch of supporting evidence. It mentions the hundreds of millions of dollars in fines levied against SBC et. al.
It mentions criminal behavior.
I was going to quote from it but there's too much juicy stuff to pick just one choice quote.

Oh, by the way: there's a spammer on SBC's network that has been spamming me from the same IP for months. I keep complaining, SBC keeps doing nothing.

Re: Supporting evidence re. SBC malfeasance & atti

Update: SBC says one of their customers who I reported for spamming me is no longer in operation at the IP that was spamming me.
»[ SPAM] SBC spammer: 64.166.112.166 www.computerwide.net
He's now spamming me from Roadrunner IP space, so he may even have been terminated.

said by David See Profile :

Inquired from the [abuse/security] guru today and according to his information they should not be in operation on that IP any more, or should be terminated according to his notes. he was taken out of operation on 09/19/05. If you have a new one let us know and just need the header.
This turned out to be false information; I just got spammed by the same spammer from the same IP.

Lying for the man... It's a dirty job, but someone's gotta do it...
(Note: For the record, just to be clear: I can't claim to know specifically who's intentionally spreading misinformation; it might NOT be beach boy. Garbage in, garbage out, as they say. Reporting false information you think is true isn't lying. What I do believe is obvious is that someone at SBC is doing so.)

Re: oversea sbc tech help -_-

It's been established that all the L1 support is overseas (though it wasn't mentioned in this thread!)

Also, the level 1 folks apparently do not even have basic information available to them, such as information about past calls made by a customer/open tickets, etc.

I was calling for the nth time about a customer's install troubles and asked if he had info on the previous calls and tickets. He did not. At that point, I demanded L2 support - someone who had access to the needed info. After insisting a few times and a 20 minute hold (which he said would be at least half an hour) I got L2 support, and some progress was made. Still took another 2 weeks to get the install complete though.

Getting bumped off.

A user who can feel free to identify himself IM'd me a few days ago re. locked thread »Misleading new SBC/AT&T ads :
...Second, just because you want to editorially redefine that having spammers on their network is organized crime doesn't make it so. If it were classic organized crime, AT&T would have bumped you off by now.

Keep the organized crime comment in your review, and even in your posting signature. as that's more of a one man's opinion thing. But stop trying to use the forums to create a truth by repeating a fiction....
I'm not enough of a threat to be bumped off - no cost/benefit analysis would make bumping me off make sense. Groups of full-time professional spammers who engage in phishing and DDoS-enforced extortion via their spam are obviously organized crime by any sensible definition. I explicitly state above why I call SBC an Organized Crime Syndicate. It's based on verifiable fact, not fiction. The folks behind Spamhaus make a very similar claim - that's what led me to make the claim that I do. Sure, it's provocative, but it's also accurate.

The mod says that my characterizations of SBC make me look bad, so I should stop. I don't expect a reply; he later said he doesn't want to discuss whether those characterizations are accurate in public; but he did start a discussion about them in private. I don't understand that logic.
