Yeah but what DONT you get with RCN?

I had RCN and got rid of them in favor of Roadrunner.
Why?

1) No outgoing smtp other than to RCNs server. This means you cant send email through your works smtp server unless they configure it to run on a different port.

2) HORRIBLE newsgroup support. RCN doesnt carry any alt.binaries newsgroups.

3) Capped download speed very low. Not sure about what they are doing now, but I had it for 2 years and never exceeded 140k the entire time I had it.

4) AND I was paying $56.00 for all these inconveniences!!!

I am much happier with Roadrunner.

1) I can send email to any darned SMTP server I please
2) Faster download, not uncommon to exceed 300-350k/s
3) Great newsgroup support, ALL newsgroups
4) Only $49.95

Roadrunner > RCN in New York City.

Too bad you should have waited, since RCN upgraded everyone for free and now with one way I see over 500KB/s all the time for free.

The old caps were average, 1500kb/s. Cry about it that you didn't get more than 1200kb/s, which is more than 80% of the advertised speeds anyway.

Re: Yeah but what DONT you get with RCN?

Thank you ice. Yes, RCN's upgraded speeds have also allowed me to consistently get over 5 Mbps, instead of the former 3 Mbps, and service has been very consistent since my initial review. As for having to use RCN's SMTP server, this is common practice among many ISPs (Earthlink, MSN and many more) that is nothing more than a minor inconvenience.

Re: Yeah but what DONT you get with RCN?

That's when the service is reliable. In my area, I had 5 techs out to check the lines and they all say the same, that it is fine. Then why don't I get a solid cable light every time I turn on the modem. Sometimes I have to wait 3 hrs or 2 days for it to work. RCN is cheaper but for me is been a pain in the . Their cable service rocks though. I just wish I could get a solid connection since I get 5800 down 784 up which is nice for $30.

Hey i haveto disagree with your statement i had RCN until i moved 8 blocks up man was my shit flying i had there mega modempackege which is called the Mach 3. Also have tried there Mach 5 line out which is a 5mb line, they all have 800kb upload cap but besides those awesome speeds your not gana find road runner touching em even close. Sure road runner has more users and customers so there news groups would be bigger but im looking more into transfer rate then sources for piracy.
When i had there Mach 3 i was getting 3.5-4 mb down upload was around the 750-800k
There Mach 5 was giving me 5.5 mb and Ive hit 6 mb before the upload stayed about the same...

Oh and also they have a alt.bianaries.WHATEVER they have it now just ain't shit init still fast transfer rate
