Networkin

BellSouth doesn't "support" networking, but that doesn't mean you can't do it. They're just sayin if you do it don't think we will fix your screw ups

Bellsouth support

Their verbage is accurate. They will not "support" your use of a router if you encounter a network problem. They don't say that you can not use a router. Be forewarned, however, if you phone them with a problem, disconnect the router, try to connect with the software drivers (their "supported" configuration), and then phone them to enlist help. In my 2.5 years on Bellsouth DSL, I've had probably a couple of dozen times where I've had connectivity or email issues. Not once was the issue ever on my end. The only reason I really ever phoned support was to let them know of a problem on their end. They would run through their script of questions, then the router issue would come up. Once they found out I was on a router, that's it, that's what the problem is, the customer has a router, and the support call is over. I got to the point that I don't call support anymore to report their system problems. I get tired of them defaulting to the "your router is the problem" for everything. In the 2.5 years, my SMC router has never failed me.

BS

Thanks for the replies guys.I wouldn't have been upset if the tech had just told me up front that they wouldn't help me with router problems.I just felt like his comments were a roundabout way to get me to buy their products.

Re: BS

He is correct BS rep will not support any networking that they do not sale or provide for you. But no other ISP will either.

Routers.......

Sometimes routers are the cause of the problem. I just had to reset mine to get a new ip. I was unable to access some pages and tracert was inconclusive, sometimes I was able to get out of bellsouth, others I would time out. Reset router and trouble cleared.

Read the FAQ

If you just order the BellSouth service and have the new Westell modem, I suggest you read the FAQ here

»AT&T Southeast Forum FAQ »Detailed information for the BellSouth 2100/2200/6100 Westell modems.

Right around half way thru section one, you'll see some stuff in red. Read that especially as it describes something very important. The entire FAQ is really good too.

Re: Read the FAQ

I wish I had found that link before I went out and bought a router.I configured the modem to the "bridged ethernet" setting and it works fine so I'll just leave it as is for now. It's nice to know that I can use it with a hub should the router ever fail.
