| LinkSys Modem Status After attempting to get the diagnostic information from my new LinkSys using docsdiag (It seems Comcast is blocking SMTP in the modem config), a tried pointing my web browser at 192.168.100.1 to see would happen. Lo and behold a set of screens came up from the modems web interface that gave me everything I wanted to see. Nothing about this is documented in the users manual although I have found references to it here in the LinkSys forum.
It appears my long aerial run of RG-6 and the splitter for my limited basic cable is leaving my cable modem with a downstream power level of -6.0 and a S/N of 35. The upstream power from the modem stabilizes at 52.
from what I have read, this is in the green...barely.
Interestingly enough, the modem reports that Comcast has the caps set at 128K up and 1800K down. [text was edited by author 2003-01-31 11:35:03]

| LinkSys Router (BEFSX41) Just added my router last night (LinkSys BEFSX41). This thing is a piece of cake. The default configuration came right up, The latest software from LinkSys loaded easily, and it looks great stacked on top of my LinkSys CM.
Although I did not need the VPN capabilities of this router right now, I liked the fact that it has a 10/100 WAN port and built in firewall. -- Estne volumen in toga, an solum tibi libet me videre?

| 360 Feet!!!!!! 360ft!!! Well you might have a great signal through a brand new run of RG6 but in a year... Your signal will go to crap due to cable degradation. The higher frequencies for cable modem skirt along the outside edge of the copper center conductor unlike the lower TV frequencies which travel through the center of the center conductor. Blame it on physics and copper chemistry but what will happen is the outside casing of the cable will dry out in the summertime and start to crackle causing leakage.
For that distance you really need an RG11 run. Good Luck.

| Re: 360 Feet!!!!!! That 360 ft. is drooping a little. Three days of freezing rain had a little ice hanging from the wire.
Knowing Comcast, they would tap the hard line running in front of my house and run a shorter RG-6 line (which would look like crap) rather that come in the way it is now (along with the power and phone) with RG-11. -- Estne volumen in toga, an solum tibi libet me videre?
